This one is for the mamas to be who need a night out on the town

While we don’t tend to cover a lot of local events, we’ve got so many NYC readers (holla!) that we’d be remiss if we didn’t tell you new moms and mamas-to-be about this one: Our friends at Big City Moms and The Bump are hosting a huge honking Biggest Baby Shower Ever that is not to be missed. There will be tons of food, insane gift bags and freebies from 55 seriously cool companies, eco-tips for new moms from Dr. Greene, great advice from the Bump’s Carly Roney, and we’d imagine, lots of glowing women in cute empire-waist dresses....

Atlantis Resort Bahamas – Disney meets Vegas meets pruney fingers

All things being equal, I will admit I enjoy reviewing warm beachy family resorts more than, say, iPhone apps. So when I had the opportunity to check out the new Kids Club at the Atlantis Resort Bahamas last week on a press trip with my four year-old daughter–and most of the expenses covered by Atlantis, Jet Blue (my favorite airline!) and LEGO who’s sponsoring a LEGO fantasy camp there starting this summer–I didn’t play coy. I was more like, tell me whose feet to kiss! Atlantis is sort of an Orlando theme park-meets-Vegas-in-the-Bahamas kind of resort, the theme being...

Family travel, cheaper? Priceless!

Travel is essential to keeping one’s sanity after having kids, but in this economy every little discount and special deal helps. Well if you have an American Express card, you can now reap the benefits of their new Destination Family travel program which seems pretty cool. Check out the whole brochure online, but the upshot is that if you use Destination Family travel agents to book your family trip, you’ll get discounts on hotels, cruises, rental cars, and activities. They can even help you with things like rental carseats or cribs or find you somewhere kids eat free. You’re...

Cool Mom Picks and Vogue Bambini – Magnifico!

Pageants? Not really our thing. But fashion shows – ooh la la! So we we’re excited to be a sponsor of Vogue Bambini’s kids’ fashion show at the ENK Children’s Club trade show in NYC this coming weekend, along with fellow sponsors Weleda and the New York Botanical Garden. Designers from Agatha Ruiz de la Prada to Zutano (with Diesel, Kissy Kissy, and more in between) will be showing their coolest spring fashions around the theme of garden style. We’re hoping to see some cool organic threads in the mix. If you’re going to be at the show Sunday?...

Expressing Motherhood – The good, the bad, and the OMG I can’t believe she just said that.

Mom’s Night Out is an all too rare occasion. (Who’s with us?) So Cool Mom Picks co-founders Liz Gumbinner and Kristen Chase are excited to be part of three good excuses to get out in NYC this week, when we perform along with a group of super talented writers as part of the off-off Broadway play, Expressing Motherhood. Created by short film director Lindsay Kavet, and writer/producer Jessica Cribbs during their kids’ naptimes, this series of performances features a group of moms simply telling their (sometimes inspirational, often hilarious) stories of motherhood under the bright lights. After hugely successful...

9/11 – a very good day for doing very good

We love opportunities to get our kids involved in community service, so we’re so delighted to hear that 9/11 is now officially a National Day of Service and Remembrance. It’s also better than making it a National Day of Watching 24 Hour News Channels and Being Depressed. It’s really a beautiful concept. And if you need some ideas on what kinds of services to perform, take a look at 911DayofService.org. The organization was created as a spot for people to share their service plans, donate to support the organization, or find a project in the works to join in....

Arthur Ashe Kids Day at the US Open – Definitely not just for kids.

I have such fond memories of scoring US Open tickets a kid, roaming the grounds, and sitting slack-jawed in awe of all the incredible talent. (This was the McEnroe days. I’m that old. ) But back then, they didn’t have anything like the annual Arthur Ashe Kids Day, which is coming up this Saturday. If you’re lucky enough to be in the NY area, it’s totally worth a trip. In addition to getting to watch amazing athletes like Serena Williams, and Maria Sharipova (which honestly, would be enough), there’s an entire 2 hour big deal kind of stadium show,...

Who wants to come see the Rockettes with me next week? No, seriously.

One of the fun things about what we do here is getting the occasional invitation to an event so cool, we have to pinch ourselves. Next week, I’m heading to Radio City Music Hall with my kids and some other bloggers for a behind the scenes look at one of my favorite NYC landmarks. The afternoon includes a meet and greet and photo ops with the Radio City Rockettes and Santa (hellooooo, holiday cards!) to help promote the annual Christmas Spectacular, plus cupcake decorating courtesy of Magnolia Bakery, and then a chance to join in the public Christmas in...

Free movies for kids all summer. As in, free. No catch. I swear.

Call me frugal, or cheap, or just a big old party pooper, but there’s just no way I can rationalize taking three young kids to the movies these days when all they really do is gorge themselves on popcorn and bounce around in the big seats. But this summer–with apologies to the other guests in the theater–I think we’re going to be enjoying a break from the hot Atlanta sun with free movies courtesy of Regal Entertainment. As part of their summer free family film festival, Regal Theaters will be showing various G and PG flicks at 10am on Tuesdays and...

When you aren’t leaving on a jet plane…yet

Nothing can turn our family vacation sour faster than arriving at the airport only to find out it’ll be five hours before we can board the plane. That’s why I could kiss the people at CheapFlights.com for thinking of parents like me when they put together a comprehensive, absolutely free, online 2009 Kids’ Airport Diversion Guide. (Warning, that’s a pdf there.) Listing airports in 24 major U.S. hubs and 10 international airports from Dallas to Hong Kong, I can use my cell phone or laptop to look up an airport quickly, which is important when I’ve got one eye...

The awesome Omni Kids Suite, a.k.a a room of their own

My girls have reached the age where they’d prefer not to share a hotel room with us when traveling — and to be honest, we’d prefer not to share with them either. So when we heard about the family friendly Omni Kids Suites available on a recent trip to Los Angeles, we couldn’t wait to try it out. When we registered, the kids received backpacks filled with cool toys — although I could have lived without the kazoos. The suite was furnished with Pottery Barn Kids’ finest and  the girls immediately settled into the bunk beds and bean bags...

Azul Beach Hotel – Putting the word “vacation” back into family vacation

When my husband got his first vacation in about three years last month, we decided to leave the cold (yes, even Atlanta has been cold!) and head South. And then we remembered we had three kids under 4. Whoops. We figured we’d be relegated to chasing them around all week long and turning in super early. But that was far from the case when we were invited to check out Azul Beach Hotel, an intimate inclusive gourmet resort located on the Riviera Maya in Cancun, Mexico. At only about 20 minutes from the airport, it’s a quick ride to...

The Club Med Vacation: Only more appealing now that kids stay free

I learned early on that family vacations tend to be something you do for your children. [Ahem, fill in theme park of choice here.] Not so Club Med. In recent years the company has converted nearly all of their properties from places that singles went to be…very single, into incredible all-inclusive family friendly resorts. The kind that parents not only don’t mind going to, but you weep openly when you leave. As a testament to their commitment to families, Club Med has got a super promotion now where kids stay free.  (I know!) So if you’re looking to get...

Hit the Road, Jack. And Emma.

Balancing the everyday logistics of work and home: No problem. Planning a vacation for our family of four: Problem. I become paralyzed with information overload, and all I want is for someone I trust to give me the real scoop on what to pack, where to go, and what to do.
