Earmuffs! Or, how to talk to your kids about politics during an ugly election season

I’ve always aimed to raise my kids to be politically aware and engaged, and to help them understand how valuable their voting rights are and how important it is to become an informed voter. Ever since they were toddlers, I’ve taken them into the election booth with me, even letting my now 10-year-old step behind the curtains and pull an historic lever for me in ’08. (Yes, New York State still has levers. Don’t ask.) So I’ve looked forward to the presidential election year in which they’d be old enough to really really get it. In my mind, that would be the time...

Are you oversharenting? 5 questions to consider before you share photos of your kids on social media

Not a week goes by where we don’t get some question related to social media and kids. It’s definitely something on most parents’ minds these days, and a debate that can get, well, pretty heated. And we get it, no one wants to be judged about their parenting choices. And so, with the recent article in The New York Times’ Well family blog sharing research that shows kids care about what their parents are posting about them, we decided to discuss this tricky topic on our Spawned with Kristen and Liz podcast. We discuss our own experiences as parents who are also bloggers and website...

Turning kids into readers: 3 simple tips from LeVar Burton to help your kids get excited about books

As avid readers ourselves, it’s probably no surprise we try to get our kids excited about reading every chance we get. But, some kids are harder than others (funny how that works), and finding creative ways to motivate less eager readers can be tough. And that’s where LeVar Burton comes in. Yes  that LeVar Burton! He happens to be our very special guest on this week’s episode of Spawned with Kristen and Liz. (Is it so wrong if we insert toddler-decibel squealing here?) We’re beyond thrilled that he took time out of his busy schedule to chat with us about how he got...

The Gift of Failure: 3 tips from Jessica Lahey to help you raise more self-reliant kids

With the prevalence of helicopter parenting these days, it’s no surprise we’re seeing kids becoming much more dependent than independent — and let’s face it, we’re seeing more really tired parents. But it can be challenging for parents who are used to doing so much for our kids to take a step (or a bunch of steps) back and allow our kids some autonomy. So how thrilled were we to welcome Jessica Lahey, columnist, educator, and author of The Gift of Failure to our Spawned with Kristen and Liz this week to discuss ways we might be inadvertently stifling our kids’ creativity and...

Sex after pregnancy: 5 tips from Rosie Pope to help you get back in the saddle again

Sex after pregnancy isn’t exactly the hottest topic ever, because when you’ve just had a baby, well, it’s probably the last thing on your mind. But, it’s definitely important for a relationship, and one that a lot of parents have a lot of questions about. So, on this week’s episode of Spawned with Kristen and Liz, we welcomed our first guest, the amazing Rosie Pope, mom of four and the creative force behind the swanky Rosie Pope Maternity and Rosie Pope Baby. You probably recognize her from her Bravo show Pregnant in Heels, which made us all feel a little better...

The best advice for new parents: 29 essential, honest, supportive tips from some of the smartest parents we know

There’s no shortage of people who claim to have the best advice for new parents. The hospital janitor. The cashier at Target. Your mother-in-law. Someone else’s mother-in-law who you’ve never even met. Caring for a newborn is already overwhelming, but when you add in all the opinions from every expert everywhere, it can get a little out of control. Since our readers and Spawned show listeners often ask us for our own best advice for new parents, we decided to ask our Facebook friends and fans and Twitter followers to share their BTDT tips, and wow, if only we had all of these...

A look at the brand new curvy Barbie: Will you buy her? | Thinking: Parent

Well, after oh, only sixty years or so of women complaining about Barbie’s unrealistic figure, Mattel has decided to get with the 21st century zeitgeist and the changing look of the world, today releasing Barbies with three brand new body shapes — curvy, tall and petite. And you know, looking at them? They actually are curvy, tall and petite. Yes! Interestingly, they’re called the Barbie Fashionista line, which I suppose is a smart marketing move as opposed to calling them something like Barbie Body Shape. Or Bootylicious Barbie which I imagine was off the table immediately.   Of course we had to have...

Friendships after kids: Smart tips and resources for making new mom (and dad) friends | Spawned Episode 30

Making new friends as adults is hard enough as it is, but it can be especially challenging when you have kids. And it’s not just making new friends, but also maintaining those old ones too. I  know first-hand that when you’ve already gone all those life changes that come with a new baby, it would be so nice if there was at least one thing that stayed the same. Sigh. When our Spawned podcast listener Shari emailed asking us to discuss the topic friendships after kids (thanks Shari!), we jumped at the chance, because both of us have, in some way, experienced difficulties in that department....

Decluttering tips from 5 top organization experts: Which is best for you? | Spawned Episode 29

I fully admit that home organization is the bane of my existence. If you’re a hard-core reader of this site or a listener of the Spawned podcast then you know that while Kristen is an avid purger, I’m what I like to think of, fondly, as a Nostalgic Hoarder. It’s like not you’re going to find me one day, buried under 25-year old newspaper clippings, old coffee cans and pounds of cat hair. But I do have trouble getting rid of my kids’ early doodles (they’re so sweet!); birthday cards from every relative ever (maybe my kids will want...

19 cool Rey Star Wars toys and gifts: She might not be in Monopoly, but she sure is here. | Spawned episode 28

We’ve been super frustrated with the lack of Star Wars toys for kids featuring Rey. Not just because she’s a woman, and all of our kids — male and female — love her, but uh…she’s the hero. One-word New Year’s resolutions: The trick to making one you can finally keep. | Spawned episode 27

This week on the Spawned Show, we closed out our year (or, we’re opening the new one if you’re listening now) with a really good talk about New Year’s resolutions: The good, the bad, and the very very broken. I really love Kristen’s perspective about calling them goals, not resolutions. And she has great tips on phrasing things positively, and being specific (“I will research and sign up for a yoga class this week”) which is far more effective than the general goals we tend to make this time each year (“I will stay fit and get healthy.”) Real Simple has a list...

The great Santa debate: The magic of childhood or the end of trust with your children as you know it?

Each year around this time, we sit back (sometimes with popcorn) and we watch the passions ignite and the tempers flare and the tears flow as parents, psychologists, and armchair experts of all kinds debate the merits of Santa. It’s amazing how many strongly held perspectives there are (and they’re all right in their own way, of course) and what incredible emotion this topic inspires. So, we’re jumping on in, as we tend to do, and offering our own perspectives on this week’s episode of Spawned with Kristen + Liz while sharing some other perspectives that you might not had considered....

Moms and me-time (or lack thereof), and kids and cursing: A juicy Episode 18 of Spawned

We think you parents are really going to like this episode of Spawned with Kristen + Liz, in which we talk about moms and me-time and why we can’t ever seem to get enough of it, especially in the US. Also, what is wrong with us when we think taking a shower qualifies as me-time? Or when Liz gets a day off and thinks, “hey! I can organize the bookshelves!” Nope. No way.
