I need your scarf to keep me warm

I am not liking this cold snap in the northeast. Not one bit. So it’s not surprising that I’ve got scarves on the brain. The handmade merino scarves from Etsy’s ScarfGuy (love that) are so classic. Handthreaded, handwoven, and hem stitched by Ohio’s Fred Ullom, the styles are more classic than trendy with plaids and simple color combos from more subtle to bold. I’m hankering for the white/violet/elderberry shown here for a pop of color from my charcoal coat, that might keep the cold out as much as the merino wool. Or so I can hope. –Liz Find handmade...

Awkward Family Photos – The board game that made me laugh until I cried

Aside from that time I won Scrabble by placing VULVA on a triple word score, I don’t generally get excited over board games. But the other night, I laughed until I was wiping tears off on my husband’s t-shirt, all because of the Awkward Family Photos Board Game. If you like Awkward Family Photos the website, you’re going to love the game. When I showed up at a friend’s house with the Awkward Family Photos board game tucked under my arm, I had some of those frozen margarita packets and a big box of cherries in my other hand...

My valentine is one sexy bastard

My husband is definitely one to give the spicier Valentine’s Day gifts, and you won’t see me complaining. Unless he happens to buy the wrong size negligee, in which case I just try to act flattered that he thought I was an extra-small. This year, I’m thinking about to follow his lead and maybe even up the ante with a little something-something just for his own underthings drawer. Now, in my humble speculative opinon, boxer briefs look fabulous on any man, so you really can’t go wrong with these Andrew Buckler long boxer briefs. What makes them particularly apt...

A smart gift for a style-conscious (and maybe picky) guy

It’s official. Despite best efforts, I’m in full-blown gift panic mode… but only for the men in my life. My husband, dad, and brother are all tough cookies when it comes to presents. They all have something in common, though: the love of a good dress shirt. But instead of heading to the store and picking out the same shirt that everyone else’s husband, dad, and brother will unwrap this year, I’m giving my guys gift certificates to design their own custom shirts from scratch. [don’t miss a great gift card giveaway after the jump!] The site Blank Label...

Have awesome passport holder, will travel

This Christmas, I’m dreaming of… white sand beaches, umbrella drinks, and menus in a language that is not my first. Oh, and a phalanx of babysitting-ready grandparents. All of that seems slightly more within reach with this super cool passport holder. Not only is this $15 passport holder from Flight 001 as cool anything, it’s also got the potential to make flying more convenient: check out the clear side pockets that keep your passport photo easily viewable. And anything that makes airport security even a little bit easier is a huge plus in my book. By the way, if...

Backpacks aren’t just for the kiddos

I’m off to the park and I have my twelve-month-old in one arm, diaper bag on my shoulder, another hand holds the sand toys, my three-year-old needs my hand to get down the stairs and maybe we’ll need a blanket to sit on… wait, I’m out of hands. This is when I could really use a backpack. I haven’t owned a backpack since college, but now, more than ever, I could use an extra hand, and the Packsack from one of our favorite stores, Poketo, is streamlined, classic and slightly retro. These colorful, canvas (nice break from nylon) backpacks...

Tools for those a little green around the grills

Yes it’s kind of a cliche that all dads like barbecuing and therefore all need grill tools for Father’s Day. But at least in my family, all the dads do like barbecuing and need grill tools for Father’s Day, so there. I love the look of all the eco-friendly grill tools from Outset, just in to Olive and Myrtle. But more so, I like the backstory; the spatula, tongs, fork and grill brush all made of 100% recycled stainless steel and farm-raised bamboo. Even the packaging is green. Now go enjoy your free-range, organic, grass-fed chicken sausages on Father’s...

The James Bond wallet for Father’s Day

While big kids may be busy at camp in the coming weeks stitching up a leather wallet for Father’s Day (and I’m sure it’s lovely), I think we can all safely agree that stainless steel is sleeker and tougher. That’s why I love the wallets and passport sleeves by Brooklyn’s Stewart/Stand. These manly accoutrements look high-tech because they are. The silky-smooth stainless steel fabric is specially created for use in aerospace and automotive manufacturing, but makes for a dandy wallet material, since it helps prevent credit card fraud by blocking what they call “non-deliberate communication” between your cards and...

A Dennis Hopper DVD library – the perfect tribute to two very cool guys for Father’s Day

I, like every other cinemaphile out there, was crushed to learn that Dennis Hopper died this weekend. I think I first noticed him–like, really noticed him–when he played the father in Rumbleish but it was a college screening of Blue Velvet that sold me forever. I loved the actor so much, I even forgave him for those Ameriprise ads. So I thought before all of his DVDs double in price now, it might be a super cool Father’s Day gift to run out and grab a whole selection of them. Of course the guy had an impressive 202 acting...

Happy Father’s Day, dawg

Not every guy is a jewelry guy but I am in admiration of those funky types who are. Meaning, those men who can pull off the hipster dog tag or chunky ID bracelet thing; not those with the Wookie chest hair and the gold Mr. T chains. For those dads in the former category, I just love this men’s custom dog tag from Penelope Poet, right in time for Father’s Day. No curlie-cue fonts here, just a sleek courier typewriter face, so he can display the children’s initials, birth dates, birthplace coordinates, or even a special nickname they call...

Each t-shirt is treated to feel as comfortable and worn as a well-read book, and the classic and out-of-print book covers printed on them are striking works of art. Real men write nice notes

Celebrate National Bacon Day with…lollipops?

Bacon is the new black, it would seem, and everywhere I look (least of all our own fridge) there is someone proudly proclaiming his or her love for the stuff. So I wasn’t entirely surprised to have found a number of bacon-oriented gourmet items at the Fancy Foods Show this year, and at the top of my list were the Man Bait Maple Bacon Lollipops from CMP fave Das Foods. Before you say ew, just remember how much kids love dipping their bacon in maple syrup with their pancakes. The combo totally works in that salty-sweet, chocolate-pretzel sort of...

Father’s Day Awesomeness: Choose your own adventure from Giftybox

Every year I struggle with what to get my husband for Father’s Day. You’d think that after seven years of parenting together I’d know what would make this particular dad’s day, but the only surefire hit I’ve found so far is a 12-pack of craft beer. Duct tape goes designer, and metrosexuals everywhere rejoice

Anyone with a baby knows the brilliance that is duct tape. No! I kid! Duct tape is only for older children and only when they’re very very loud. But for real, I do love duct tape and its 1001 uses and obviously I’m not alone. So it was only a matter of time before someone came up with designer duct tape to patch up basement furniture and garden hoses and tennis rackets with a little more panache than the age-old industrial silver stuff. Grab that swanky blue paisley one and go get to work fixing something. –Liz Find designer...

Let’s face it, a man’s first true love is meat

Being Dad – Way better than trying to convince him to sit through Lamaze class

There’s no shortage of books and videos and instructional websites out there for moms–to-be. J’aime Mon Papa (Translation: Daddy Rocks)

When choosing Father’s Day gifts for the daddies in my life, I strive to present them with a memorable token of affection. It doesn’t have to be extravagant or costly, but it has to be meaningful. Which automatically rules out socks. The lovely Sarah Jane Studios has just listed a new postcard – J’aime mon papa (I love my dad, for the non-francophiles) – and it’s just perfect for Father’s Day. And since (unlike Kristen and Liz) I do have a bit of the crafty gene, I’m envisioning that postcard mounted on a piece of cardstock – decorated by the kiddos, of course – and then simply framed. Way to turn an everyday art project into a sentimental and beautiful gift. Even the dads who scowl, “Aw, save your money,” each Father’s Day will be touched. –Julie For more Father’s Day gift ideas, check out our gift guide, or take a peek at our menfolk...
