The history of Black Americans is filled with stories of inspiration and strength, so in honor of Black History Month, I was so happy to find artwork inspired by one of my favorite poets, Maya Angelou. Each piece features quotes that have been turned into artwork and speak of that resilience, hope, and courage. I also love how universal they are in their messaging, and how her beautiful words speak to all kinds of people. Wise words for us all. Etsy’s Finding Sunshine Rae creates typographical prints on photo paper (at top) which feature a mix of lettering and colors to spell out...Read More
I adore simple graphic art for kids’ rooms that isn’t necessarily too babyish–I’ve witnessed firsthand how fast children’s tastes can change. And the graphical Big Red Balloon Print spotted at Brika is a great find. Designed by Becky Hui Chan of Honey & Bloom, she makes the kind of simple graphic designs in strong colors that look great anywhere from a nursery to a playroom to an adult’s bedroom. And yet she has a sense of playfulness that instantly has her pegged as a cool mom. Suddenly, I want to go watch The Red Balloon on Netflix. Hm, wonder why....Read More

This one is for every parent who has ever sat in an auditorium behind another parent taking pictures with an iPad. Ha. Hello I don’t suppose you know the brand of the inspirational artwork for kids rooms you feature on an old post about Gilt Group personalized sales ? I love them but can’t find them. Many thanks, Jill. Jill, you have great taste–we love those prints too, and fortunately we tracked them down at Fresh Words Market, the same website that sells the wonderful Be Fearless inspirational art print we featured a year ago. It’s a terrific resource for inspirational posters that lean more towards cool than cheesy, with modern graphics and a kid-friendly bent. One of the wonderful thing...Read More
When a book gets your kids excited to read more, that’s about the most beautiful thing in the world. But when a book gets your kids excited to create too, it’s absolutely thrilling. And that’s just what happened when my girls discovered the gorgeously produced new Alexander Calder pop-up book, Alexander Calder: Meet the Artist! by Patricia Geis. If your child hasn’t yet been introduced to the magic of Calder–I fell in love with his mobiles at the Whitney Museum when I was a little girl– this is the perfect book to set kids off on a lifelong love of...Read More
Custom portrait pendants: A modern mom jewelry alternative. (Just uh, don’t wear your own portrait.)
The classic locket in which we keep our gorgeous children close to us at all times is a wonderful tradition but we always love seeing updates, from custom Instagram photo necklaces to USB necklaces with hundreds of photos of your beloved brood. There’s also the awesome embroidered portrait necklaces from Dandelyne and now we’ve turned up another great find for you in the form of Todd Borka’s fabulous wooden customizable portrait pendants. These are a wonderful gift for the mom who wants a more modern version of personalized keepsake jewelry to flaunt her kids, or the family that’s already thinking ahead to Mother’s...Read More
We’re so excited to present some of our favorite ideas for how to make a baby gift set. Because one of our favorite things to do is help our readers find great baby gift ideas. If you know the parents have a theme or style in mind, whether it’s vintage florals, race cars, Nantucket prep, or a single color or pattern, start with one anchor piece. Then, search for a few additional gifts that can tie it all together. Think nursery art, stationery, stuffed animals, accessories–even tag sale finds can make the gift surprising and unique. Our partner Nordstrom...Read More
Yup, we believe in fairies. Because we have a hardcore Peter Pan fan in the house. I can’t tell you how many times I have needed to tell my daughter that I needed a break from pretending to be Peter (she then suggests I be Captain Hook instead). When I found this Peter Pan themed print by Australia’s Seal Design Studio while looking for art for her new big girl room, I realized how surprisingly well Neverland could fit into the decor. I find this modern take on a retro movie poster completely charming. It captures the sweet wonder of the...Read More
If you’ve ever tried to refinish old picture frames you know the look is so gorgeous. As for me, I am such a fan of the distressed frames from O’Brien Schridde, whose frames I now own quite a few of, and more recently, the stunning array of refinished frames above from The Art of Chic on Etsy. That said, my inclination is generally to buy great frames from artists like these, since I don’t always have the time to do major DIY projects. But if you want to refinish old picture frames yourself, here are a few resources to help you...Read More
Whether your heart is in San Francisco, Madrid, or some little town on the outskirts of Quebec, a piece of custom map artwork for your beloved would make a most heartfelt gift for Valentine’s Day. Created by Bombus — that neat London-based company whose wooden storybook letters we recently discovered — their bespoke framed artwork is sentimental without being sappy. Plus, how cool would it be to show the kids that Mommy and Daddy met right there? Globetrotters who can’t settle on any one spot should check out their trio of hearts, shown above, or the round-the-world 16 hearts (though...Read More
It’s no secret that we love alphabet posters around here, so we’ve rounded up some of our favorites from the past few years. Whether you like it when X stands for X-ray, X-wing, or Malcolm X, we’ve got an ABC poster you’ll love. 1. The Cutest French Alphabet Poster Pourquoi? Because it’s si mignon and that’s a fact. Also because it’s fun to see the bee under the letter A, for Abeille. 2. The Most New York Alphabet Order an entire set of Joanne Dugan’s funky alphabet decals (complete set shown at top) or just the letters you need to spell a certain...Read More
I’m a fan of typography for decorating the kids’ rooms and nurseries. It’s a nice way to change things up from all the cute animals and fairy tale characters that so many of us lean towards. So when I saw this gold-foil printed artwork from The Penny Paper Co, I was like, yep. Have to have that. Don’t miss a VERY limited time discount below The Don’t Grow Up print is perfect for a child’s room, or at least ours, considering I’m always telling my kids that they’re not allowed to get older. (They ignore me, of course.) But the...Read More
We like learning with Star Wars, provided it’s not while doing a handstand in the swamps of Dagobah. Luckily, these gorgeous Star Wars alphabet posters teach the ABCs and there’s even a counting poster to teach numbers 1–10 without a single drop of Hutt sweat or sleen spit. It’s a fantastic way to merge your inner geek with your outer interior decorator. Pick from a variety of color schemes, or request a custom palette. We love the not-too-bright rainbow version, but the monochrome prints could definitely swoop from nursery to kid room to home theater with the ease of a...Read More
I have a little boy who never stops making noise. Like, ever. I know, I know, being noisy is a common affliction among little kids. It’s their thing. And though it can drive me crazy when I haven’t yet had a full cup of coffee, I think my little guy’s noises are actually pretty darned adorable. Naturally, I was charmed by Tom Gauld’s Noisy Alphabet print, featuring all sorts of creatures and the nonsensical noises they make. Instead of A with the ubiquitous red apple, there’s a one-eyed monster bellowing AARG. P features a spring-loaded cube, bouncing along to the...Read More
Fine art photos of vintage children’s toys that transport you to Coney Island, without the temptation of Nathan’s fries
I’ve always liked the idea of decorating with vintage children’s toys (I now own that there very toy typewriter), but there’s another way to achieve that feeling, should you not have the shelf space or the inclination to go thrifting every weekend. Take a look at David Levinthal’s wonderful photographs of vintage children’s toys that you can find exclusively at children’s fine art mecca Little Collector. They’re all from his Coney Island series, which feature — you guessed it — tiny amusement park replicas in the most wonderful colors. Each fine art photograph is only printed in editions of 50, 150, and 250...Read More

We love daydreaming about all the ways to make our nurseries and kids’ rooms even cooler–or to rewind time and start over from scratch when we see some of the awesome options available now. And yes, they are awesome. Snurk Kids’ Bedding This is easily the coolest bedding we’ve ever seen. It looks fantastic on its own, but even better with a real live kid in there. And when you think about it, it’s a pretty smart way...Read More
It’s no secret that the Cool Mom Picks team loves to find unique photo gifts for family, friends and teachers. While photo books are a great option for any price level, it’s actually affordable and easier than you think to create custom photo canvases too. Because, hey, Grandma’s walls could use a little love too. So we’re excited about the photo options at Picaboo for home decor. You can easily upload your pictures to Picaboo’s site straight from your computer, Facebook, or Flickr. Then Picaboo offers two editing modes — Easy or Creative. As you’d imagine, the Creative mode offers...Read More
I love the warmth and comfort that vintage pieces can express. They bring to mind a slower pace and remind me to focus on the moment and quit rushing so much. I need that sometimes. But there’s a really fine line between that charming and out-of-touch, right? Polyester crocheted afghan? No. Modern screen printing on vintage china? Yes. Meet Nina van de Goor, a graphic designer based in the Netherlands who does some amazing work. She’s the perfect mix of whimsy and modern, and I’ve fallen in love with her whole shop, Ninainvorm. Nina designs some amazing poster prints, which...Read More
A coloring book can make a fantastic holiday gift for kids: It doesn’t require batteries, it’s portable for the trip home, and you can start using it right away. Now here’s a new one that’s fantastic for another reason besides the fact that it’s just so darn cool. We’ve written about Little Collector before, a great shop whose artwork from major artists supports the nonprofit Rx Art which gets amazing pieces into hospitals and facilities whose patients can use a little inspiration. Their new Rx Art Coloring Book Vol IV was designed by Matt Murphy Design and underwritten by Warby Parker (yay,...Read More
