Mommy’s little gentleman

It always seems like girls get the pick of the litter when it comes to cool accessories and boys are relegated to fourteen varieties of baseball caps. So if you’ve got a little hat connoisseur of the male persuasion, I strongly suggest this adorable spade canvas child’s driver cap from My Baby Clothes Boutique. The canvas is super light and lined with a cute cotton plaid, and it’s constructed to fit a bit loosely so it won’t make those little brows sweaty. Golfer in the family or not, this timeless cap is such an unexpected way to top off...

Bit’z and totally awesome pieces

On a near daily basis, I find myself thinking, “Dude, I wish I were in NYC.” The museums, the subway, the food, the conferences, the shopping, the excitement, the hanging out with CMP editor Liz. [ed note: Come visit any time! -Liz] Life in The Big Apple just seems so bright and shiny and hip compared to my lazy days in the suburbs. Okay, my days are not lazy at all, but you get what I mean. Once I saw the cute collection of clothes and doodads at Bit’z Kids, I had one more reason to sigh wistfully. Located...

Trend alert – Kimonos are hot this spring

The kimono may have been around since the 8th century, but we are seeing its influence this season in everything from clothing to accessories to chocolate (hello!). The vibrant colors and gorgeous patterns are so fitting for these months following the drab of winter.  Check out how some of our favorite shops and designers have taken their inspiration from kimonos, giving it a modern twist. -Christina NoKo’s Japanese-inspired dresses (photo above) echo the kimono and obi sash with bright contrasting colors and traditional patterns on soft cotton. I love that the style is ready to play, while the look is dressy...

Rock-n-roll birthday party wear? Reader Q&A

Can you think of a good source for cute rocker-girl clothes for toddler girls? I’m doing this whole rock n’ roll birthday party for a 3rd bday and want to get her a fun outfit. -Tara I have a few favorites that immediately come to mind when I think “rockin’ toddler”. For instance,  Psychobaby, a shop we love so much we’ve created a whole category of Cool Mom Picks on their web shop, has loads of cool options. Check out Rowdy Sprout’s AC/DC dress (shown above) or the Micro Me Denim Tomboy Skirt. With lots of cool options for...

Baby sunhats go bohemian

Finding a baby hat I loved was like…well, something that was really hard. For some reason they were always too floppy, too stiff, or too cutesie (seriously, enough with the huge bows at the chin). But Rikshaw Design just nails it with their adorable new baby sunhat. We first discovered this company’s lovely bohemian crib bedding and I’m so glad designer Catherine Fitzsimmons has taken the plunge into clothing and accessories. I love the simple, Indian-inspired unisex patterns like the booti, shown here. The cotton voile is machine washable (yay) and even the thin chin strap on the hat...

Reduce, reuse, recycle your kids’ clothes easily with thredUP

Back when my kids were outgrowing their outfits every three months, it pained me to have to restock their wardrobe continually. It wasn’t just the cost, it was the time it took to select each item. That’s why I’m intrigued by the new easier-swap site thredUP kids. In just a few minutes, you can pick out a box of gently-worn clothing that will fit your child, pay a few bucks to have the box shipped to you, and voila: Right-sized outfits that my kids can outgrow again.  Then, in about the time of a typical nap, you put outgrown...

Funky + simple + handmade = SOLD.

My very favorite word is cupcake, but I’m also a huge fan of funky, simple, and handmade. Luckily, those are the specialties of Mountain Aven Baby. Well, maybe not the cupcake part. But the other three. We see loads of bibs and blankets, but what makes WAHM-run Mountain Aven Baby special are the eye-catching fabrics and meticulous artistry. We’re not talking clearance cotton from Hancock Fabrics here. Her bibs — many of which are on sale now — are backed with lush chenille and splashed with gorgeous, unusual designs from hedgehogs to vegetables to sock monkeys. The reversible dresses...

Some boys have all the luck

Would someone I know please get married soon? And while you’re at it, lend me a baby boy to bring? Not because I actually want to carry around a baby at a wedding (what if I leave him on the buffet table when I put him down to get seconds on lasagna?) but because I feel the urgent need to see a baby boy wearing this: The seersucker baby one-piece from CMP favorite Velvet and Tweed. The ivory top is linen, the seersucker bottom is a pale blue and white stripe, and every inch of it is calling for...

Beautiful organic children’s clothing priced like the not-so-organic clothing

I recently had the pleasure of meeting Shivani and Neha Gupta, the two young, talented sisters behind the organic children’s clothing line, Sama Baby, and let’s just say I’m glad I did. Although my kids might be more glad because they’re the ones who can fit in their beautiful, affordable, wearable, organic kids’ clothes. Did I mention affordable? Neha is a former design developer for Coach and her attention to detail shows in the lovely, soft fabrics, and the beautiful drape of the clothes. The girls’ collection includes plenty of baby layette basics in a sweet pink, cream and...

2010 love makes the world go ’round.

Look at the 2010 love logo carefully and you’ll see how cool it is. And the thinking of the company behind the clever design is equally simple but striking: Make the world better in 2010. Do it through love. Which is what makes the 2010 love onesie a sweet keepsake for every baby born in this very special year. Made of 100% organic cotton and available through the Design Sisters Etsy shop, it’s a great baby shower gift to celebrate the joy and love babies bring to the world. In fact, 2010 love shirts are available for men, women,...

Patently cool.

In 2009 in the US, there were over 200,000 patent applications and over four million births. Clearly, we are a very creative country, if you get my meaning. So if you know a one-of-a-kind baby, we’ve got a great gift idea: Celebrate enterprise, ingenuity, and good ol’ snuggly cuteness with a custom Patent Personalized Onesie from CMP fave mitetees. Just give them the birthday of the future Einstein in question, and they’ll send you an adorable onesie or tee up to size 6T proclaiming his or her numerical uniqueness.  And of course you can order them for your own...

Baby gifts with a sense of humor. No April foolin’.

We figure if we weren’t be laughing at all the challenges of motherhood, then we’d probably be crying, so it’s no surprise that we’ve been long time fans of the hilarious selection of baby gifts at Wry Baby. And we’d be completely remiss not to mention their huge annual April Fool’s Day sale. Today only you can snag almost everything in the shop, like the twins onesie set that just so happens to be featured in our Baby Shower Gift Guide. Or my personal favorite – The Wheel of Responsibility – for 50% off. I’m not sure there’s a...

Personalized baby gifts that will make you dance. Or jig.

We instantly fell in love with artist Alyssa Coberly’s adorable personalized onesies a few years back, and it seems like her work, sort of like babies, just keeps getting cuter and cuter – which is why we included her exclusive gift set in our new Baby Shower Gift Guide.  So if for some ridiculous reason you haven’t clicked over to our guide yet, we figured we’d show you what you’re missing. The set of three completely custom onesies make the perfect gift for any expectant mama or new baby, but keep in mind that because they go up to 12-18 months, you’re looking at an...

The Easter dresses of my dreams

This will be the first Easter in a very long time that we’ll actually be celebrating with extended family. Other than a plane flight with three young children (help!), the toughest item on my agenda will be tracking down cool Easter best clothes for my kids. In years past, I’ve gotten away with more casual attire on Easter, but if I had my druthers, my girls would be wearing Easter dresses from the gorgeous new spring line from CMP fave NoKo. I’m completely in love with the Nico dress (at top), particularly that stylish sash. It’s Easter-fancy but not...

Wacky Packs are back – as tee shirts!

I grew up in the heyday of Mad Magazine and Wacky Packages and clearly my son has inherited both my twisted sense of humor and appreciation for fine parody. We both did a happy dance when we saw these new kids’ Wacky Pack T-shirts from 10 Again Clothing. Moms and dads will appreciate the 70’s flashback of great labels such as Slam Jims, and Cap’n Crutch, with some clever new additions, my favorite being Slacker Jack. They have the vintage look of a 35-year old t-shirt that’s been washed so many times it’s super duper soft. The toddler shirts,...

It’s like a custom baby tee convention

One thing we know about Psychobaby, is that when they come out with something new, it’s going to be everything we adore–clever, quirky and, of course, cool. Currently we’re now drooling over their new Custom Shop of personalized tees for kids. Personally, I am totally in lurve (which is more than love, according to Woody Allen), with the Monster Name Tee where the letters are made up of silly letter-shaped critters to spell out your favorite little monster’s name. I also really dig the Tattoo Tee for boys or girls. Sizes range from 3 months to 6 years and...

All hail the spring poncho

The weather is turning here in the South, which means that winter coats are way too heavy after the first few morning hours, while the super light spring jackets are too light. So it’s the perfect time for my fave in-between season cover-up, the poncho. We just discovered the gorgeous hand knit baby ponchos from Vintage Baby Revival, and mom and owner Melissa McColl’s lovely pieces make e a fabulous option for these cool late winter and early spring days. Each is hand knit from local Canadian wool with coordinating vintage buttons as the closure. I’ve got my eye...

Dreaming of spring. Or heck, just a day above freezing around here.

I adore Splendid‘s adult line for myself. And when I first discovered they applied trademark stripey, stretchy, soft clothes to a babies and kid line (thanks to a cousin with great taste in shower gifts), I got a little more tingly than one should get over such things. Even their solids are so beautifully tailored and drape so exquisitely that we get compliments on a solid blue t-shirt dress from Splendid Littles all the time. Go figure. What’s fun is that now Splendid Littles is moving into (gasp) florals. And one of our favorite mom-run shops, Arte Bebe, has...

A baby cap with a little more to it

Over the past few years at Cool Mom Picks I’ve seen the reinvention of the high chair, the baby carrier, the baby bottle and the bouncy chair. The last newborn essential I thought needed any improvement was the baby hat. Well color me surprised, but Honeydumplings, which created the buckwheat toddler pillow I went mad for last year, has gone and done just that. Their new baby cap on first glance just looks like a simple, go-with-anything, creamy, gender-neutral cap. Soft as butter with that bamboo cotton jersey or organic sherpa, but you know – still a cap. When...

Brooklyn in da Playhouse

I’m not sure when exactly my humble borough of Brooklyn, New York became cool, but there seems to be evidence of it, from the occasional celebrity sightings in my local diner, to people saying, “oh you live in Brooklyn? Cool.” So while a line of Brooklyn baby tees might have once been a display of local pride, I think visitors might appreciate them too. Bklyn Yard makes some of the most fabulous, most original printed baby tees and onesies I’ve seen in a while, all printed on insanely soft, designer-style “destroyed” peruvian cotton, giving it that rough-around-the-edges look that...
