2017 EWG best safe sunscreens for kids and babies: Which is the most affordable?

Every year, I take a look at the Environmental Working Group’s report on the best safe sunscreens for kids and babies. This list measures popular brands against the EWG’s standards, including everything from worrisome ingredients to false marketing claims. Not every top-ranked tube of lotion is the same value for the dollar, though, so I’ve broken down all 19 of their best safe sunscreens for kids by price per ounce. Because I’ll bet there are other parents like me, who want safe products for their kids but don’t feel the need to spend more money than necessary. So this year we thought we’d take a good look at their short list of the EWG Best Kids’ Sunscreens, find the average prices online (generally from Amazon, Drugstore.com, or the brand’s own website if the product isn’t widely available at...

Each year, I check out the Environmental Working Group’s Guide to Sunscreens to find the safest sunscreens for kids. Naturally gentle baby skincare from everyone’s favorite giraffe

Other than diapers and onesies when it comes to babies, is there anything more iconic than Sophie the Giraffe? Even my friends without kids recognize the now ubiquitous French baby teether. So so it makes sense that she’s branching out into the new Sophie la Girafe Bath and Baby line. (So fancy, that giraffe.) This is a new line of natural and organic beauty and bath products made just for babies, and when I say natural and organic, the folks who created the Sophie baby skincare line have really done their homework, eliminating potential allergens, synthetic perfumes and dyes, no-no’s for parents like parabens and phthalates, and...

Baby Pibu skin care for babies: Perfect for those of us who don’t have a pediatric dermatologist on speed dial.

Moms have long lamented the fact that newborns don’t come home from the hospital with instruction manuals. But Baby Pibu skin care for babies, founded by dermatologist mom Dr. Amy Kim, actually does come with instruction cards. Okay, so they only help with how to care for your infant’s skin, and not what the heck that cry means and how it’s different from those six other cries…but still. The baby skin care market is flooded with products that claim to be safe for sensitive skin, but personally I feel pretty good knowing an actual dermatologist was behind the formulation. Also the fact that Baby Pibu leaves out...

Earth Day Pick: 7 of our favorite natural skin care brands that you might not know.

We get to try a lot of amazing beauty products, and you can rest assured that one of the first things we do is read all the ingredients to see just how safe they are for our skin and yours. But of course, natural doesn’t always mean better (and to be fair, in some cases, better results doesn’t mean 100% natural). In honor of Earth Day, here are some of our favorite natural skin care brands from some of the smaller companies you may not know. They all maximize results and pampering while minimizing, well, pretty much everything yucky....

Terrific organic skin care for babies, moms, and women who used to be babies.

If you smell something delicious that’s like a cross between a creamsicle, a vanilla candle, and springtime (in the best possible way), it’s probably me. That’s because I’ve been using the organic skin care products from Summer Sky Organics. Specifically the Mandarin Vanilla Mama Belly Oil. Not on my belly, as I’m not pregnant. But pretty much everywhere else. Just like the rest of the products from this mama-run, organic skin care company, the belly oil has a variety of uses for mamas, expecting mamas, babies, and women who have never even been near a baby in their lives, but just...

6 non-toxic shampoos for babies and kids we can’t live without, in every price range.

When my first son was just a baby, the chemicals that I learned were in most baby shampoos and bath soaps scared me, honestly. Even when I looked through the non-toxic shampoos for babies at our grocery, I wasn’t sure which ones I could trust. New moms have so much to worry about already–I wasn’t expecting bath time to be stressful, too. Fortunately there are now so many great non-toxic shampoo options for kids and babies, and they’re getting even more readily available and more affordable so that more parents have access to them. These are six of my...

The super pure moisturizer that’s great for kids’ eczema…or fickle grownup skin

I always look for facial moisturizers that are oil-free and chemical-free. So that basically leaves…uh, water. Until now. This amazing, natural, one-ingredient spray not only treats eczema and dry skin for babies, kids, and adults, but it also makes my face totally glow, without any of the cystic acne I usually get from oils. You might say I’m…coconuts for it. Heh. CapriClear has only one ingredient: fractionated coconut oil, also known as caprylic triglyceride. Basically, you get the benefits of coconut oil without the scent and waxiness, leaving a clear, pure, all-natural spray that’s non-staining, odorless, and a great...

Seventh Generation’s new baby products are eco-awesome

Those of you with babies in the house will definitely like the eco-awesome offerings. Seventh Generation’s new line of baby bathtime and baby skin care...

The superhero of winter skin creams

What can destroy the yearly family photo calendar, ruin the shoulder of your holiday sweater, and repel grandmothers in a single bound? Answer: It’s the little kid with the green snot waterfall and the gnarly red snot rash. And that, dear friends, was my kid this year. Luckily, we found two new products that work together to stop this problem and make that adorable kid kissable again. It’s no secret we love MD Moms, and now I love these two new products too. The Baby Silk Dry Skin Rescue Cream is formulated to relieve dry, itchy, sensitive skin that’s...

The online baby registry that keeps things natural

I will never forget that rush of giddy power when they put the baby registry gun in my hands. I had no idea what I was doing. I had no real concept of what I needed; just that I had the power to build my tiny nursery empire. Then the baby showed up, and I realized that, sadly, most of the things I really wanted could only be found online: the truly natural and organic products, the baby carriers, the wooden toys.  Now there’s a new kind of baby registry in town that lets you find those very things....

A safer diaper wipe? Yep.

It always scares me when I see a laundry list of unpronounceable ingredients on my baby’s personal care packages. Especially when said product is a diaper wipe, meant to touch the delicate nether regions of my little one. Thankfully, there’s a new wipe in town that contains only two ingredients–water and fruit extract. WaterWipes from the Irish brand DermaH2O, have just launched in the U.S. and they very well might be the purest wipes around. Made with 99.9% water and .1% grapefruit seed extract, these are wipes you can feel confident about. I am seriously turned off by any...

A Dolphin Tale

“I got water in my eyes!” my son wailed.  But he wasn’t crying. Actually, he looked like he was trying to cry and couldn’t. “Doesn’t hurt, does it?” I said smugly.  And he shook his head no. A perfect chance to pitch a fit, lost to products that actually live up to their tear-free claim. Oh, and did I mention they’re also hypoallergenic, all natural, and organic? I’ve got to admit– Dolphin Organics impressed the heck out of me. The number one reason? Transparency. Each bottle is dominated by a large, clear label showing every single ingredient and its...

These natural baby hair products are 90210 approved

It generally doesn’t matter to me that a bunch of celebrities use a particular hair care product on their babies. But it did make me wonder what was so special about Jenerations Baby that Hollywood moms seem to be flocking to it. Jenerations Baby was founded by Jennifer Reilly, a mom with two kids and fourteen years of experience as a hairstylist. She wanted natural products she could feel safe using on her kids, so she designed the hypoallergenic line without sulfates, parabens, harsh chemicals, or essential oils that are potentially estrogen disruptors. Well, now I see what all those...
