Barre3 review: My new fitness obsession. And why it’s perfect for busy moms.

I’ve tried all sorts of workout routines, everything from running 5k races and a pricey gym membership to fitness classes and Jillian Michaels’ DVDs, but lately I’ve found myself in a rut. Too busy. Too bored. And well, with the holiday season upon us, I need something to help me deal with the stress. And the cookies. Barre3 was created by workout guru Sadie Lincoln based on a workout she invented for her client Madonna (yes, that one), and first launched in Portland. It now has studios popping up all over the country, so when one opened in my ‘hood, I figured it was...

The ultimate cashmere shrug for the world’s cutest flower girls and imaginary ballet legends.

If you’re starting to think special gift for a special girl, especially one who likes to dance around the living room to the Nutcracker the second the weather gets nippy (I am familiar with this phenomenon, intimately) then our good friends at Ivory Row have introduced just the thing. Thus, the cashmere shrug for girls was born.   – Don’t miss an exclusive discount for our readers below! – Designed in collaboration with professional ballerina and celeb fitness guru Mary Helen...

Kid style: How to wear tutus out in the real world

Don’t miss an exclusive discount for our readers! I once feebly resisted my children’s love for tutus, until I realized that they could be way more than the beginnings of a fairy princess outfit. Tutus are now on trend as outerwear, as in publicly appropriate skirts. So we wanted to help you out with a few ways to wear tutus in a cool, stylish way, on behalf of our awesome new sponsor eden & zoe, whose gorgeous kids clothes we’ve been drooling over for ages now. Including, yes, their tutus. Think of the multi-layered, lined Alessandra tutu in black, white, or...

The Nutcracker at BAM – magical holiday perfection

If you’re going to be in New York City this holiday season (shockingly, many tourists do this very thing each year!) this native New Yawker has an awesome tip for you. At least if you’d like to squeeze a performance of The Nutcracker into your festivities, without having to hock your plane tickets and hitchhike home. Now I’m a huge, longtime fan of Balanchine’s NYC Ballet production at Lincoln Center–there’s nothing quite like it–but if you’ve got young kids, it’s pretty hard to justify the $110-150 for orchestra seats. If you can even find them now. As an alternative,...

Ballet for beginners – and their wistful moms

As a budding young ballerina, I was simply in love with A Very Young Dancer by Jill Krementz. I used to just lose myself in those marvelous photos until the pages were as dog-eared as the copies in the used bookstores that now carry it. So when I saw the new Ballet for Beginners by Mary Kate Mellow and Stephanie Troeller, it brought me right back to that same place–dreaming that one day I’d be the girl being whisked off to the Kingdom of Sweets on a magic sleigh with a prince and a mouthful of marzipan Ballet For...

Ballerina girl

Aside from good calves and bad toes, my many years of ballet training gave me a huge soft spot for ballet flats, especially when they come in mini versions for little girls. I nearly squealed when I saw these silver baby ballet slippers from Cheeky Little Soles. Like most soft leather booties, they’ve got a non-slip sole and lots of elastic to ensure that they stay on. But unlike the others I’ve seen, these have a flexible sole and truly look like real ballet shoes which is fantastic for crawlers and early walkers. I’m just hoping they don’t inspire...
