As we approach MLK Day, we’re thinking it’s the perfect time to get our kids learning about activism and about how one man, through his peaceful and steadfast fight for equal rights for all, made lasting changes and a huge impact on generations. Inspired by his words — “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere” — and motivated by his actions, we’ve put together a list of 10 children’s books about activism that we think will inspire our kids, in turn. From stories our littlest readers will enjoy to non-fiction books that motivate our older kids to take action about those things they believe in, we...Read More

As the year comes to a close, we’re looking back at our picks for the best children’s books of 2016 — according to our editors, writers, and of course our children! What a perfect way to kick off our Editors Picks of the Year. As our readers know, we all adore books here at Cool Mom Picks and we’ve collectively read hundreds of great kids’ books this year, from the sweetest board books for babies, to excellent picture books for early readers, to compelling graphic novels — and it’s not an easy job to whittle it down to just a few favorites. Ultimately, we go with the books...Read More
Dan Yaccarino’s Happyland board books help our kids understand worry, gratitude and sharing. You know, the easy stuff.
If you’ve ever had this tune stuck in your head, “We’ve got the whole wide world in our yard to explore…”, you can thank Dan Yaccarino. He designed Pablo, Uniqua and the rest of the Backyardigans crew, and he’s also the creator of the adorable show Oswald. Best of all, he’s been a huge help to our kids in developing their imaginations and learning how to work well with others. With his new Happyland board books series, he’s aiming to teach children about social-emotional aspects of growing up — and, in our opinion, he nails it. We can only hope there are more books to...Read More
My younger kids usually need a little one-on-one time to decompress after school, and one of our favorite ways to do this is reading together. After a few minutes in my lap, they’re ready to go play again. But, I have to admit, I’d much rather read a cool indie book like Carson Ellis’ Home than anything Dora or Clifford or, heaven help us, Caillou. I think it’s hard to find artfully designed board books for preschoolers — although we do love Cozy Classics and BabyLit — but the new board book for kids, Air by Kyla Ryman with beautiful cut-paper illustrations by Nathalie Trovato, is now right up...Read More
Each year, when we put together our Father’s Day Gift Guide, we have an extra-soft spot when it comes to seeking out cool Father’s Day gift ideas for new dads. There’s something so special about commemorating the day for the very first time — even (let’s be honest) if he’s so tired he hardly remembers it in years to come. That’s okay; that’s what photos are for, right? We hope one of these first Father’s Day gifts for new dads strikes just the right note for you. And be sure to check the rest of our guide for plenty of other ideas, whether sentimental,...Read More
Hold on to your bracelets of submission, ladies. We’ve found a smart new gift for girls. My First Book of Girl Power by Julie Merberg teaches our little girls what it means to be strong, important, and powerful. The geek in me loves that I’ve found a cool, comic book-inspired gift for the kids in my life (they’re all getting one of these now, by the way), but it’s the mom in me that adores that this board book is not just a nod to comic book culture. There are some important lessons for all kids — boys and girls of all ages — in the pages of...Read More
We’re getting close to the holidays, which for many families means road trips with the kids. And there’s nothing more fun, right? Hahahahha. I recently did 16 hours in the car with my three kids — each way — and lived to tell the tale. If there’s one thing I learned on that trip (other than that I’ll never do it again) it’s that movies are an easy way to pass the time, but at some point the kids need their alone time. And books are great for that. So, I’ve rounded up a few of my favorite travel books for kids of...Read More
I’m looking at the brand new Olivia for Gymboree collection of girls clothes (6mo-12y) that just launched today, and I must say, it’s all pretty darn cute. While I’m not always a fan of kids’ cartoon characters all over my children’s clothes, when it’s a beloved character from a great book — and I mean an actual book, not the book that came from the TV show that came from the movie — I can justify it a little better. In other words, Oliva > Dora. (It’s my own weird thing, I know.) Since my own tween girls grew up on...Read More
It’s been a big few weeks for America, hasn’t it? From the heartbreak of the Charleston shootings to the landmark #LoveWins Supreme Court decision to the Girl Scouts donor dust-up, people everywhere are talking about prejudice. While I’ve seen such a beautiful swell of love, support and compassion for all kinds of people all over my social media this past month, I’ve also talked to lots of moms who are wondering how to talk to kids about prejudice and racism. Because even as my kids help me pick out wedding presents for all our friends, prejudice most definitely still exists whether it’s because of the color...Read More
