As we get ready to send our girls back to school–some of us sooner than others (ahem, Kate in Nashville)–we are so happy to see the trend of science themed tees for girls hitting the bigger retailers, like Lands End. The space tee for girls that they offer, which features a cool solar system design, really is only “for girls” in that it’s got a more narrow, contoured fit with scalloped hems and shirring at the shoulders. The NASA Crew tee for girls is also kind of cool for future Sally Rides. And yes, there are some space tee designs that get a...Read More

The CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund design contest winners now available at J. Crew. And they are wonderful.
Each year we love to see what comes out of the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund competition, which highlights the work of upcoming designers. J. Crew has partnered with the winners for the past four years to bring their names and work to those of us who are more likely to step through the doors of a J. Crew than to attend New York’s Fashion Week. (Not because we wouldn’t love to, mind you.) This year’s theme was Indigo. The results are stunning—and now you can shop the J. Crew CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund winning designs. Yay! Check out the gorgeous designs from winners Dao-Yi Chow and Maxwell...Read More
Browsing through photos of last night’s 2014 Ralph Lauren Kids fall preview with my girls (which we were sad to miss this year since the 2013 Ralph Lauren fall show was so great), they had some pretty strong opinions on which things they loved for themselves. Let’s just say, anything with boots? Yes! Fair isle? No. Color, yes! All brown…no way. Don’t even ask about boys in bow ties. So, if you’re looking for some fun, fancy girls’ looks for fall, and want the very opinionated opinion of two grade-school girls, allow us to help provide you with some inspiration for color, patterns layering and...Read More
While we try to cook most of our meals at home–with the help of all of the awesome recipes curated on Cool Mom Picks by our resident foodie, Stacie Billis–sometimes dining out is a necessity. You get it. And now Chipotle’s new Cultivating Thought author series is a very cool effort that just put the chain at the top of my list for our next pit stop. Author Jonathan Safran Foer apparently came up with the idea to print writing selections on cups and bags after stopping for a bite at Chipotle one day, then finding himself with nothing to read. He pitched the Chipotle CEO, who loved the...Read More
I more than love my single-origin coffee. You could say we’re involved. But it can be hard to find delicious, high-quality beans that aren’t shipped out on someone else’s schedule as part of a curated monthly subscription. Sometimes, I want to select my own beans and have them shipped to me right away. Thank goodness our pals at TOMS have added TOMS Roasting Co to their marketplace of ethically-sourced, carefully crafted products that give back. Which is a far cry from shoes, and yet…it works. My current obsession is single-origin whole bean coffee, ground daily and brewed in a Chemex,...Read More
As huge supporters of the handmade movement, we’ve been fans of Etsy since about day one. And now that they’ve teamed up with the amazing charity Kiva, well, let’s just say if you share our passion, this is an effort worth getting involved with. Similar to Kiva’s existing program which helps provide loans to borrowers in need from around the world looking to start a business, the new Kiva partnership with Etsy now provides artisans with access to interest-free microloans through a program known as Kiva Zip. You can provide a loan to a slew of artisans looking...Read More
In honor of World AIDS Day today, there’s a lot you can do. It can be as simple as signing a petition to keep funding for AIDS treatment and prevention going to save the lives of moms and babies. It can be talking to your kids about AIDS and how far we’ve come with treatment and research. And it can be making a generous contribution through the simple act of shopping. The Project (RED) shop offers a lot of great products that help support AIDS research and treatment to various degrees. But what I particularly love is this FEED (RED) Love 30...Read More
I remember sitting down at my very first PTA meeting, excited for my daughter to enter kindergarten at a wonderful public school, until I heard these words: It looks like we’ll have to cancel the dance program this year. I felt the tears well up in my eyes. As a former dancer myself, knowing there was a full-time dance instructor on staff, as well as a visiting program with a notable professional dance company, was one of the key reasons I was excited about the school. With enough fundraising we knew we could bring them back. But it wasn’t...Read More
We love small businesses, and we love Martha Stewart. And now they’re coming together in a marvelous opportunity for one lucky entrepreneur or crafter. Could that be you? Second question: could you use $10,000? Martha Stewart’s American Made competition is searching for the next generation of creative entrepreneurs launching their own small businesses, just as Martha herself once did. Although Martha and her editors are currently selecting their top ten entries, you can nominate yourself (or someone else, of course) for the 11th spot, the Audience Choice Award. Simply go to the nomination form and provide all the necessary...Read More
For all the complaining I do about the tiny bricks scattered all over the living room floor, I adore LEGO bricks for how much they fully engage my kids even more than the latest video game. So we’re delighted to you a very Happy 80th Birthday. Based on how much you are still loved, I suspect you’ll be as relevant in another eighty years as you are today. So today, we’re rounding up some of our favorite LEGO picks over the past years. –Christina [see more of favorite picks and resources for cool LEGO things after the jump] [LEGO...Read More
Well lookie here at what Gap is doing these days: taking a page from the Target Shops, West Elm’s indie artist selections, and other mainstream retailer partnerships with the little guys. Because starting today, Gap has joined forces with the quirky, uncommon tees from Threadless in a brand new collection made just for kids. The Gap Threadless tees for kids have launched with five cute designs–of course. After all, they’re all crowdsourced and chosen by you. Lim Heng Swee’s bunny shirt is crossing fingers, ears and legs–not sure if she’s hoping for something or just really has to pee....Read More
It’s the perfect spirit of the holidays come to life: Give a little, get a little, and well, a collectible holiday keepsake doesn’t hurt either. I just discovered the Heart 2011 Designer Ornament Collection from HSN, a partnership with a ton of celebrities and the ever so spectacular St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Browse a wide selection of ornaments including designs by some favorite celebrities. Big names featured in this year’s selection include Nate Berkus, Mariah Carey, Liz Lange and Martha Stewart. The foodie in me personally loves the selections from Emeril Lagasse and my personal inner goddess, Padma Lakshmi–that’s her design...Read More
As a glass-is-half-full kind of person, I am thrilled to read that the FDA has (finally) agreed to ban the use of BPA in all baby bottles and spill-proof cups. OK, sure, Europe, Canada and China, along with a handful of U.S. states, have already made this move. And I know that the words BPA-free have already been on just about every baby bottle and sippy cup label for the past couple of years. But I’ll give the FDA credit for issuing the ban, even if it seems to be coming a little late and really doesn’t go far...Read More
I have a soft spot for Anthropologie; their clothes have a kind of romanticism that makes me want to run off to Paris and spend my days eating macaroons in little sidewalk cafes. But this fall, Anthro brings that same dreamy style to kids’ clothes! I’m happy to discover that they’re partnering with kicokids one of our favorite indie kids’ labels, to create a capsule collection for girls, in sizes 2-6. The pieces, designed by kicokids founder and creative director Tia Cibani, offer a nice mix of patterns and textures, all created with a sense of whimsy. One standout...Read More
There’s a lot of pink out there in October, and that’s a great thing. We applaud any effort to fight breast cancer by spreading awareness or raising donations for research and support. Still, if pink’s not your color, we’d like to introduce you to a breast cancer initiative from Lee Jeans that’s really intrigued us because it’s not about what you buy. It’s about what you give. Lee’s National Denim Day has raised over 83 million dollars since its inception in 1996. That’s some number. We’re as skeptical as anyone about pinkwashing, but this isn’t about buying jeans which...Read More
At this point, it’s not news that Target is spot-on in the designer collaboration department. They seem to keep churning out awesome new collection after awesome new collection with the hottest kid brands around. And now it’s Appaman’s turn. Hooray! Appaman, the beloved Brooklyn-based brand with the fun-loving mascot ape is partnering with Baby Buggy for their foray into Target-world. The Appaman for Target collection is the final collection in the partnership between the retailer and Jessica Seinfeld’s charity. The collection includes adorable onesies, ruffled tank tops with bubble shorts, and polos with matching pants, many adorned with the...Read More
I’d have to say that cleaning the kitchen has always been one of my least fashionable moments. I’m usually in an old t-shirt, with a scowl on my face and schvitz on my brow. But a new designer sponge (that’s right, designer sponge!) may actually make the whole cleaning experience a little more glamorous. O-Cel-O just introduced two new no-scratch sponges designed by Project Runway winner Christian Siriano.Yep, Christian Siriano sponges. These designer cleaning utensils brings new meaning to the term “sponge-worthy.” As in, is that spill on the kitchen floor really sponge-worthy? Or can I just use a...Read More
I love it when a cool designer creates a less expensive line for the masses. I’ve swooned over the adorable styles and appealing price tags of the Stella McCartney for Gap Kids and Baby and Splendid Littles for Target lines; and now I can add Hooray by Cynthia Rowley to the list. Rowley’s collection of baby and toddler clothing and accessories, designed exclusively for Babies R Us, does in fact make me want to do a little cheer. The spring 2011 offerings from Hooray, which just hit Babies “R” Us stores yesterday, feaures a line of cute clothes for...Read More
I love having a West Elm right in my hood. It’s always a fun source of home inspiration for me, and I like quite a lot of their accessories–even if some of their wood furniture gets beat up in like two seconds if you have kids. What I was particularly excited to see was the shop taking the Urban Outfitters/Anthropologie route by including more fun small housewares and accessories, and embarking on some super cool collaborations with small brands and artists. Like a whole table devoted to CMP fave Lotta Jansdotter, including these beautiful soy wax candles; though unfortunately...Read More
We just love it when one of our favorite little mom-run brands makes it big. Not only because that means that quality construction and design reap the rewards they deserve, but because even more people will get to discover a great new star. It’s the same way I felt when my high school best friend showed up on a commercial for The Chapelle Show. That’s why we’re so excited that CMP perpetual crush, Little Alouette, is now available from Seventy Seven. Maybe you’re familiar with Little Seventy Seven— the online portal for American Eagle Outfitters and Aerie which hawks...Read More
