Born Free Africa: Designer Mother’s Day shopping for a very important cause.

As you can tell, we’re gearing up for Mother’s Day around here (our gift guide will be up soon, promise!) and just in time, we got wind of this exclusive collaboration between Shopbop and the fashion elite to support a brilliant cause.  Born Free has a very specific mission to end mother-to-child HIV transmission at birth, something that is entirely achievable. To help make that happen, 22 major designers including Diane Von Furstenberg, Prada, Stella McCartney, Tori Burch, Rachel Roy, Marni and more, have parntered with ShopBop and Vogue, and created exclusive designs with 100% of the profits going right to...

Heart for Heart Dolls: Because African Girl Dolls, Mexican Girl Dolls and Laotian Girl Dolls are just as fun as the American ones.

While I have finally come around to accept my daughter’s affinity for American Girl Dolls, suddenly Saige and Marie-Grace have serious competition with Rahel, the Ethiopian doll from the Heart for Heart Girls dolls collection. I cannot say enough wonderful things about Heart for Heart Girls, which are each based on 10 real ten-year-old girls from Afghanistan, Belarus, Laos, India, Ethiopia, and beyond.  I really like that each one one gives your child a chance to learn more about her story and her area of the world, while a dollar from each purchase is donated to a nonprofit that...

One more way for kids to show their love for animals is to save them

I discovered the wonderful work of the Kenyan rescue charity, the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, several years ago, when my parents fostered an orphaned baby elephant on behalf of my children. We continue to follow Kenze‘s progress to this day and we love the frequent and very specific updates we get from them, and news that he’s gone from near starvation to healthy adult now thriving in the wild, even despite the rampant and illegal bands of poachers that still threaten him. Sheldrick’s passionate work gets some ink thanks to avid celeb supporters like Kristin Davis, but otherwise I’m surprised I don’t hear...

Honor International Women’s Day by sharing one simple story from ONE that makes a difference. Easy.

We celebrate the hard work and contributions of women every day here at Cool Mom Picks. For this year’s International Women’s Day today, we are standing with ONE to applaud the essential work of one group of women in Africa: farmers. You may not think of farmers being women, but throughout countries like Rwanda and Kenya, they make up to 80% of the agricultural workforce in some communities. Whoa.  It’s important to spread the word about their hard work to feed their communities, since investors and outside support usually go to farms owned by men. We’ve been a fan of many...

FashionABLE scarves’ new spring line warms us up in lots of ways

We love FashionABLE scarves. They’re gorgeous and well made– some of the most stylish scarves we’ve seen anywhere–and their human touch makes us even more devoted fans. In fact, see our editor Liz sporting the Genet Scarf along with three other blog publishers we love, in this Cool Mom Picks Instagram photo. They all confess that it’s the one time they don’t mind showing up at an event wearing the same thing! -Don’t miss a great limited time offer below- It can be hard to find a personal connection to the clothes we wear in our mass-produced culture, so I really love that every...

Stuffed animals that give back: So wonderful, you won’t mind one more in the house.

I have always had a weakness for stuffed animals and I was thrilled to be able to buy them without judgement again when my daughter was born. When I came across Bunnies By The Bay I was sold instantly on their fabulous little stuffed animals that give back. Not only do they look like the high end ones you might see in FAO Schwartz, but when I found out that they also help orphans around the world? I want to give them all a hug. And a home. The Red Thread collection of stuffed animals donates 10% of their proceeds...

Inspirational artwork for children’s rooms? Reader Q+A

Hello I don’t suppose you know the brand of the inspirational artwork for kids rooms you feature on an old post about Gilt Group personalized sales ? I love them but can’t find them.  Many thanks, Jill.   Jill, you have great taste–we love those prints too, and fortunately we tracked them down at Fresh Words Market, the same website that sells the wonderful Be Fearless inspirational art print we featured a year ago. It’s a terrific resource for inspirational posters that lean more towards cool than cheesy, with modern graphics and a kid-friendly bent. One of the wonderful thing...

Having a heart for Valentine’s Day

While I’m all for fun chocolates and roses and jewelry on Valentine’s Day (I’m sentimental like that) I also love a gift that gives back for any holiday at all. A great idea: The Project (RED) heart tote bag now on sale at Fab.com. For a mere $11, you get a sweet, sturdy, canvas tote that lets you boldly show your support of Project (RED), one of our very favorite organizations, while knowing a portion of the proceeds directly funds HIV/AIDS programs that happen to be wildly effective. Also, here’s a hint: chicks love guys who have a heart. Trust...

The Super Bowl commercial we’re most excited about: Bono’s Project (RED) song, Invisible

Because we’re huge fans of moms everywhere, we’re also fans of Bono and his ONE organization and Project (RED). Especially because of what they’re doing during the Super Bowl tonight: U2 will release their new single, Invisible, (produced by the very cool Danger Mouse) on iTunes, all to help raise money to provide HIV/AIDS medicine to go to the 250,000 babies still born with HIV each year. Here’s the thing — it is free! But it will only be available from 6:00 pm Sunday night until 11:59 pm EST Monday night through the Project (RED) Site. [update: here’s the link for the U2...

From books that celebrate his life’s story, to activities you can do with the kids on this Day of Service, we’ve rounded up some of the best ways to remember the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. today, or any day of the year.    Volunteer opportunities If your local newspaper or websites don’t list any special events, check out All For Good’s searchable database for Martin Luther King Day events in your area. In the Boston area, I was able to find events where people of all ages will make fleece scarves for homeless people, serve at...

Sole Hope: Throw a shoe party, save lives

There are a lot of things we can take for granted living in the US, like the fact that our children are probably not going to lose their limbs to bug bites. But now that I’ve found this incredible organization called Sole Hope that helps prevent that very thing in Africa, I’m not only enlightened, I’m inspired to help. Essentially there are these bugs in Africa called jiggers. Ever heard of them? I hadn’t. They are little sand fleas that burrow into bare skin, lay eggs, and can lead to huge problems like tetanus, gangrene, and even paralysis and amputation which...

Last minute gift ideas: Lots of ideas when you have little or no time to spare

Last minute gift ideas are always the toughest. You have all these last minute people you forgot about (with no offense to them–we get busy!) and suddenly you’re stuck with whatever you can find in the drugstore aisles. Fortunately the drugstore chains have gotten way better with the gift selections if happen to be any left by now. But as an alternative, try any of these gift ideas you can pull together fairly easily. I promise they’re actually quick–no tracking down beeswax to make candles or breaking out a sewing machine. And of course, make sure you wrap it...

One toy in, one toy out: Used toy donations to help kids in need this holiday season

Especially with so many services that help facilitate toy donations, there is nothing more sad to me than seeing a perfectly good plastic toy sitting by the curb on garbage day. And yet, if you’re like me, you’re not quite sure who to call about the sand table gathering wet leaves in the back yard or the pile of electronic guitars and singing cars your kids accumulate over the years that you might be clearing out, especially with the new gifts coming in for Christmas. Now there’s a way to pass your formerly loved plastic toys on to children...

Jewelry that feels as good to give as to get from the Kwagala Project

I’ve always said that one of my favorite categories in our Holiday Gift Guide are gifts that give back. We managed to pare it down to 14 this year, but honestly we could have gone on forever. And while you have probably heard of some of our favorite resources–organizations like PROJECT (RED) and TOMS marketplace–there’s one that’s new to us that I wanted to call out specifically: Kwagala Project, whose pink coil bracelet is featured in our guide this year. Especially since they have an amazing holiday deal right now. I met the founder, Kristen Hendricks, this year and was instantly...

And if you’d like to educate your kids about the importance of giving at this “I want” time of year, the handmade accessoris and gifts from Me to We is an option to consider. While we’ve featured many organizations we adore that empower people with jobs and resources to create goods for the global marketplace, like Given Gooods Company,  31 Bits, and most recently TOMS marketplace, this group does something different to enhance the giving experience: You have...

10 ways for families to join in on #GivingTuesday. Lots of them free.

After the total madness of Black Friday, Small Business Saturday, and Cyber Monday (phew) one of the things we love best is #GivingTuesday. The point being that after taking advantage of so many great shopping deals for yourself and your loved ones over the past week, it’s a good time to think about putting aside a little something for others in need, locally and abroad. We can’t tell you where or how or how much to give, but here are ten ideas to get you thinking: 1. Support an Indiegogo or Kickstarter campaign and help an entrepreneur. 2. Give...
