Baby Loves Disco turns 10! Which kind of makes it Tween Loves Disco, huh?

I’ve been a huge fan (and friend) of Baby Loves Disco ever since I shook my groove thing at my first dance party with them back in 2006. Well, they’re turning ten this year (10!), and they’ve got a slew of cool dance parties all around the country to celebrate. They’ll be touring the U.S. all fall (starting with Baltimore tomorrow!) with fun events where you and your kids can cut a rug, get down, or do whatever it is that you love to do on the actual dance floor of a hip club–cool music included, although there’s no shortage of other...

Josephine: A children’s book as complex, vibrant, and endearing as Josephine Baker herself.

It’s clear that Josephine Baker is one of those few celebrity icons who transcends generations. My parents loved her, I loved her, and now my girls love her thanks to the new book, Josephine: The Dazzling Life of Josephine Baker. And despite it being a book for kids, if it weren’t for Christian Robinson’s wonderful illustrations, you might think it was an adult-targeted poetic ode to the legendary performer. Patricia Hruby Powell’s prose feels like jazz itself, dancing across the pages with a kind of defiant playfulness; the random line breaks, indentations, metaphors, erratic use of all-cap words are writers’ tools...

Prima Princessa presents the Nutcracker on PBS

One of my all time favorite holiday shows is the Nutcracker Ballet, but I didn’t imagined I would get tickets to see it with my toddler for quite a long time–like, ten years, at least. Performances are expensive in New York! Which is one of the reasons that Cool Mom Picks has been fans of the mom-created Prima Princessa series of dance videos, and especially Prima Princessa Presents The Nutcracker. Well good news: Now it’s free. Prima Princessa Ballerina will be airing on PBS this December so set your DVRs and get ready to be charmed. It tells the...

Ubisoft Just Dance 2 – they could call it Just Embarrass Yourself 2. And we’d still love it.

I have waited three months for the Ubisoft Just Dance 2 for Wii to come out. Three months! Because that’s how long it’s been since the Cool Mom Picks team monopolized the display model at the Blogher conference, challenged our friends at Mamapop to a dance-off, and embarrassed ourselves for all the internet to see. Think: YouTube evidence.* [don’t miss a great giveaway after the jump!] Now you too can experience the joy that is Just Dance 2. And trust me, you will want to. This music and rhythm video game depicts dancers on screen–amazing ones–boogying down to tunes...
