Fancy pants kids clothes for up to 70% off.

When one of my favorite local shops is having a 20-70% off clearance sale, I’d be remiss if I didn’t drop everything I’m doing, head to the website, and click on every single category immediately. You know, just to see. In this case it’s Estella NYC. The great thing is, it’s not just clearance on fall/winter items. This cute Saomini sundress is now $25 down from $62 and the boys’ clothes section is stocked with everything from cool hoodies (love this one!) to designer jeans. There’s also baby clothes galore, and stuff for swanky moms, like Issey Miyake Pleats...

Oh goodie!

Some of my kids’ favorite tees come from San Francisco’s Bunny and Bee. When we first discovered them a few years back, I fell in love with their modern but not obnoxiously hip t-shirt designs for boys and girls, from motorcycle-riding robots to retro-chic unicorns. While this mom and pop label has ditched the shopping cart on the website to focus on wholesale orders, they are selling an amazing t-shirt goodie bag right now via email. Basically you specify boy or girl, and a size from 6m through 6T, and for just $20 (hello!) you’ll get four random kids’...

KidSteals. No it’s not about stealing a kid.

Moms of babies that have grown up to be not quite babies anymore will be delighted to know that BabySteals, the popular daily sale site for baby gear, has introduced KidSteals. It’s sort of like one of those members only sales sites – only without the membership thing – where you can log on every morning at 9 MST and catch the daily steal, from DC Skateboarding Shoes (shown) to Patagonia Swimsuits. Of course the early bird catches the worm here, or at least the organic play clothes at 60% off, so set your alarms if you want first...

Winter bump style

Oh I know how it is. You’ve got a May due date (or so), and while you swore you wouldn’t buy one more maternity piece, you hit January and your current wardrobe is causing actual mental anguish, you’re sick of the cold, you’re sick of feeling enormous, and ooh, lookie here..sales!  (Or maybe that was just me a couple years ago?) Fortunately this is a great time to get one or two more special pieces to power you through winter and early spring, ego intact. One of our favorite maternity designers, Isabella Oliver, is now doing up to 50%...

Giving high heels the boot

Oh please tell me I’m not the only woman on the planet (or at least the island of Manhattan) who just can’t do the spiky stiletto heel thing. I know they’re trendy and fabulous and make your legs look great and all – but uh, no. So I’m always delighted to find some fashion-forward footwear that can take me from the office to child-wrangling all in the same day, like the selection of boots at Shop Modern Vintage. I’m coveting any number of the funky reasonably-heeled European boots made of leathers so soft and yummy, no one will even...

My favorite girls’ dresses go on sale and suddenly I need 47 of them

Last night I was yapping with my sister-in-law about holiday dresses, when I clicked over to the Noko Baby site to show her some of my all-time favorite dressy dresses for girls. And wouldn’t you know it, I get an email this morning, letting me know that for the first time ever, all the dresses are all discounted by 25%. Even if you’ve already got your Christmas clothes and New Year’s Clothes and Valentine’s Day clothes picked out for your girls this year (I’ve heard there are in fact moms like this out there, even if I don’t know...

Cool Stocking Stuffers under $10 that still bring the Christmas magic

Seeing the kids make a beeline for their stockings is a favorite moment on Christmas morning. But, even though this is their first taste of Santa for the day, “he” can’t afford to spend a small fortune on their stockings. So I thought I’d turn Santa onto some of my favorite sites to help you fill a stocking without needing to mortgage the sleigh. -Christina Stubby Pencil Studio is my go-to site for creative, eco-friendly gifts for creative kids, and I love their time-saving gifts under $10 section. Grab a tin of Hopscotch Chalk in a cool retro tin,...

Just in time, the children’s Christmas dress I’ve been looking for

I’ve just learned at the very last minute that my daughters need a dressy dress for the holidays. So I’ve been checking frantically to see if one of my favorite labels, Ses Petites Mains has anything new and fabulous, and wouldn’t you know it – today they actually do. The brand new Greta Dress looks just lovely; all romantic and flowy, in a fuchsia tissue silk that girls are going to love to spin in until they’re dizzy. The detailing is amazing (as Beth Miles’s work always is), with soft elastic under the empire waist tie, and pretty little...

Hearthsong is a sanity saver

We at Cool Mom Picks may be great at finding stuff, but that doesn’t mean we’re so great at remembering to actually buy it ourselves in a timely manner. With an uncompleted shopping list that includes a newborn, a few toddlers, some kids and a couple of tweens, Hearthsong is making it easy to knock a whole bunch of them off in one visit. Although I can’t say I love everything on their site, and they aren’t exactly a small, independent shop, I do love their selection of crafts and games and their collection of environmentally-friendly, low-tech toys from...

For a child’s first bike, skip the training wheels, and go right to Tyke Rider

I’ve long been a fan of the wooden, pedal-less early rider bikes which get kids more confident and more able to ride a real bicycle than anything I ever had back in the Stone Age. But the prices? Holy heck. And by heck, you know – I don’t mean heck. Well praise the gods of affordable fabulosity for the new learning bike from Britain’s Tyke Rider which starts at around half the price of the $300+ LIKEaBike, and is now available in the states. Right in time for Christmas, yes! They were kind enough to send me over a...

Shop for Anissa, today!

A few days ago we told you about our friend and fellow blogger, Anissa Mayhew, who suffered a severe stroke in late November. We are so pleased that today is Shop For Anissa Day in which more than 60 businesses have agreed to donate a portion of today’s sales to the Help 4 Anissa fund to stem her growing medical costs, and help support her three kids and husband, who has taken a leave from his job to care for them. Not only is this a great cause, there are some fabulous shops represented here that will definitely help...

Redbox helps you save your money for popcorn

Sure, there’s no shortage of ways to rent movies nowadays; whether you go in-store, via mail service, or even streaming over the Internet. Still, ’tis the season to be mindful of where every penny is going, so maybe it’s time to check out Redbox, which is a kiosk-based $1 movie-rental service. Basically, you reserve your movie online, then pick it up at a kiosk, generally in chains like Kroger and Walgreens. But of course, make sure there’s one near you before you sign on. (There are 50 in Atlanta where I live.) The movie selection isn’t massive, but it...

The little red wagon gets a makeover

When we made the move to suburbia, one of the first purchases we made was a wagon. But like most people, we were limited to what we could find at our local chain store, which was definitely about functionality and not at all about sleek modern design. Lucky for you, we’ve found an amazing alternative from the mom and dad team behind Kaiku Design. Dad and designer Scot Herbst, along with his wife (and past CMP reviewee) Amy took their love and talent for modern design and created a simply stunning wagon. Made from Baltic birch and covered with...

9 reasons to do your Black Friday shopping online

As if you needed any other reason than preservation of all sanity to avoid the lines at the malls today, we thought we’d remind you just a few of the reasons why we simply love shopping online. 1. Shopping in your slippers. Even the old, nasty ratty slippers. (In which case, may we interest you in a pair of new ones?) 2. Discounts that are good beyond some ungodly hour of the morning when you should still be asleep. In fact, the discounts on our holiday gift guide and ultimate baby shower gift guide are all good through December 31. Not that you should wait that long to do your Christmas shopping. 3. Free snacks, whoo! 4. One click comparison-shopping thanks to your personal shopper, Mr. Google. 5. No hassle potty breaks with your kids. In fact, that should probably be #1. 6. Save your gas, save the earth. 7. Ask your favorite germaphobe what lurks on the handles of those shopping carts sometime. Or maybe, don’t. 8. No toddler tantrums. Unless it’s your own child. In which case eh, just move to another room. 9. You can’t find 98% of our holiday picks at the mall. Sleep in, mamas! We’ve got a slew of great deals in our Holiday Gift Guide that will still be here tomorrow. [photo:...

One more reason to stock up on Vincent shoes for winter – 35% off

I can’t even believe it’s time to start thinking about snow boots but yep, it is. Vincent Shoes has always impressed me with their children’s boots in particular, which have nice European styling at decent prices. Plus they always have amazing sales — great for the type B moms like me who never remember to get my kids boots until halfway into the season. The Jarl winter boots (above) have that Wellie thing going that’s so hot for kids now, only with a little woolen flap of fabric that folds down over the top of the boot to keep...

Two more reasons to spend the holidays in NYC. Besides the sheer awesomeness of it all.

This time of year, the entire world descends on my fair city, or seems to, judging from the midtown traffic and my inability to get anywhere near the fitting rooms at H+M at lunchtime. So I’d be remiss if I didn’t point out a couple of really fantastic events to consider with the family if you’re going to be anywhere around NYC this holiday season. Reviewing hot ticket performances is definitely not the worst part of my job here, especially when they’re as incredible as Wintuk by Cirque du Soleil. It’s every bit as spectacular as all the Cirque...
