10 of the best glass baby bottles for Earth Day and any day.

With news that even Phthalate-free and BPA-free plastic baby bottles may not be all they’re cracked up to be, more parents are on the hunt for glass baby bottles. While not long ago, the idea of glass baby bottles once inspired panic in the hearts of new parents — and I remember those days! — glass in the diaper bag is becoming increasingly prevalent. Even old school bottle brands that were holding out for years are now out with glass alternatives and hey, we’re all for choice when it comes to our baby gear. Glass baby bottles, for the uninitiated are made of...

Earth Day pick: Green Toys to help keep our oceans clean

I often talk to the kids about why it’s so important to keep our neighborhood and parks clean by recycling or picking up trash we find on the sidewalk. And this Earth Day, I love that Cool Mom Picks favorite Green Toys is reminding us how important it is to take care of our oceans and waterways too. Green Toys’ Safe Seas Sets, created in conjunction with the non-profit organization Sustainable Surf, pairs a fun biplane toy or submarine toy with the paperback All the Way to the Ocean which will get kids thinking about how little actions–like tossing a gum wrapper...

Earth Day pick: Your PlanetBox lunch box gets even cooler with the help of Jack Johnson

PlanetBox eco-friendly stainless steel lunch boxes are a favorite for my kids and me. Now, through an Earth Day partnership with kid-friendly folk musician Jack Johnson, they’re making school environmental education better too, and I love that so much. PlanetBox’s bento-like boxes are pricy, so let me start there and explain why I’ve found they’re totally worth the investment. They are free of lead, phthalates, BPAs, and any other new, bad chemicals we don’t know about yet–and they’re designed to last forever. Hopefully not “landfill forever” but forever as in, we’ve had ours for years and they still pop out...

Tasty cocktail recipes from organic liquor are a perfect way to toast Earth Day.

They say that to take care of anyone else, you first need to take care of yourself. This year I’ll prepare to show our planet Earth Day love by first showing myself some love with one (maybe two?) of these eco-cocktails made with organic liquor. Hey, we’ve gone organic with everything else, why not with our spirits, too? If you do imbibe, these happen to be delicious as well as a little better for the planet. For you pregnant ladies or non-drinkers, just stick with some of our favorite mocktail recipes. Serve in locally made glassware, wash with limited water...

Earth Day Pick – PaperStatement art and jewelry

Discovering the Paper Statement Etsy shop was like looking at your own perceived craftiness in the mirror and laughing at it. I am absolutely blown away by the things true artists can do out of paper and cardboard. The first thing that caught my eye from German artist Dorisse is this very cool paper necklace made from corrugaged paper beads. It looks great with multi-colors like this, but the simple natural beads or single-color options are pretty amazing too. [see more incredible paper jewelry and sculptures after the jump] Really impressive book sculpture. Statement bracelet from paper beads. Very...

Earth Day Pick – Eco friendly wooden toys

On Earth Day or any day, I love the feeling a wooden toy creates; fresh, clean and perfect for a creative little mind. It’s no secret we are fans of Little Sapling’s all-natural wood toys. Now the husband and wife team, Nick and Kimber, have done it again with this charming little piece just added to their collection. The wooden toy camera makes it pretty obvious why the Christensens have the top selling toy shop on Etsy. (Not that we don’t have other favorites, of course.) It’s an excellent, original gift idea for the kid who has everything or for your...

Earth day pick – Neat-os reusable snack bags

Of all the ways my family has gone a little greener, perhaps the easiest has been ditching plastic bags for reusable bags. And since discovering this new brand, we’re almost completely plastic bag free when it comes to snack time and school lunches. The Neat-os reusable bags are some of the coolest I’ve seen, made right here in the USA and feature a cool clear section so you can actually see what’s in the bags (smart, right!). Created using food-safe materials that’s free of BPA, lead, and all the icky “p” words (like pvc and phthalates), these bags will...

Earth Day Pick – Kiwi Crate’s green boxes

When I first read about Kiwi Crate’s monthly craft subscriptions (here, in fact), I couldn’t wait to gift one to my niece. She clapped in delight each time her box arrived because she knew it’d be packed with fun, engaging, and lovely activities that were perfect for her four-year-old hands. And now that Kiwi Crate has announced some new boxes–two of which seem perfect to mention on this Earth Day–I can’t wait to sign my niece up for a few more. Kiwi Crate’s monthly boxes come jam-packed with loads of activities built around a certain theme, and their fun/educational gardening theme...

B Kind 2 Earth Day

I can hardly believe that Earth Day is older than I am. (Ah, feeling young — what mom doesn’t love that?) Begun in 1970 as a means of demonstrating broad public support for the environmental cause, Earth Day is a reminder that this planet is a pretty cool place to live, and we don’t want it to look like it belongs on an episode of Hoarders. To that end, the National Wildlife Federation, Nickelodeon, and our friends at The Motherhood have joined forces to create B Kind 2 Earth Day. We’re super excited to be on board too, and...

Happy 40th Earth Day! To celebrate, here are some of our favorite picks

Happy  40th Birthday, Earth Day! You look fabulous! Not a day over 29, honest. In honor of this big birthday, a great opportunity to teach our kids about the best ways to take care of this nice planet of ours, the EPA has put out a whole list of kids’ Earth Day activities. On top of that, I’m recycling some of my favorite Cool Mom Picks’ Earth Day picks from years gone by.   I have no plans to serve up a plate of BPA or other harmful plastics to my kids, which is why I love the eco-friendly, recycled plastic plates for...

Save the Planimals in honor of Earth Day

My kids are pretty sensitive souls, but trying to explain to them the plight of the arctic fox is a little less real to them than the plight of the Massachusetts spider they are carefully rescuing from the bathtub. But now Plan Toys’ new Planimal Series of endangered animals will help bring home exactly which animals might not be around if people don’t give them a hand too. Smartly grouped into four different playsets representing different parts of the world, the Planimals endangered animal toys are fashioned out of natural rubberwood. While lacking some of the details you’d find...

Earth Day Pick – Because music makes the world go ’round

One of the best ways I’ve found to get a message to stick with my kids is through music, and the new CD My Changing Planet has us appreciating the specialness of our planet a little more this Earth Day. Like a save-the-earth version of Free to Be You and Me, My Changing Planet features two dozen performers who were brought together by four determined moms wanting to create a CD that both parents and kids could learn from and enjoy. Plus, 100% of the net profits go to one of our favorite charities, The Nature Conservancy. With so much variety...

Essentially Freddy and Olivia Deane have devised a way to make dishes out of a recycled polypropylene plastic that’s free of BPA, Phthalates, melamine and all that other stuff you hear about in scary news stories these days. Even the packaging is eco-d up the whazoo. Each plate features a different illustration from the Smiling Planet children’s book they designed about being good to the Earth. Take a look and...

Earth Day Pick – Barley & Birch. They mean green

I’m a sucker for cute kids’ tees. You can tell by taking one look at my kids’ drawers…er floor. And one of my new favorite eco designers, Barley & Birch, is doing amazing things with photography to create beautiful t-shirts for kids, right along with a corporate responsibility program that should make light green brands blush. Organic cotton children’s tees, onesies, pants and hats feature beautiful bright designs, like Wave (pictured) or my other stand out favorite, Flowers. But I really I love that the company is seriously committed to being as environmentally friendly as possible, even sourcing production...
