How to decorate with tea lights: creating ambience, not a shrine

I’m a big fan of tea lights and votive candles around the house, especially in the winter months when the light is gone so early. I’ve started lighting candles at the dinner table with the kids, even to make a mac n’ cheese dinner feel a little more special–and you know? It does. But there’s a fine line between creating ambience and creating a scene out of Carrie. So here are some tips for how to decorate with tea lights that can warm things up when you need it most. And by the way, I totally cop to my...

Star Wars alphabet and counting posters: Learn ABCs and 123s, you will.

We like learning with Star Wars, provided it’s not while doing a handstand in the swamps of Dagobah. Luckily, these gorgeous Star Wars alphabet posters teach the ABCs and there’s even a counting poster to teach numbers 1–10 without a single drop of Hutt sweat or sleen spit. It’s a fantastic way to merge your inner geek with your outer interior decorator. Pick from a variety of color schemes, or request a custom palette. We love the not-too-bright rainbow version, but the monochrome prints could definitely swoop from nursery to kid room to home theater with the ease of a...

Valentine’s Day cards and gifts for people who don’t take Valentine’s Day too seriously

As much as I love funny Christmas cards and sarcastic Mother’s Day cards, I have to admit I have a thing for beautiful, artful Valentine’s Day cards — although yeah, I like funny Valentine’s Day cards too. So much to my delight, I found an artist on Etsy who delivers on both fronts. Look at this beautiful Valentine’s Day card from Emily McDowell Draws on Etsy. Then look closer…and suddenly I love it even more. That’s kind of the spirit of the whole shop — beautiful, feminine design with a whole lot of edge. The same goes for the...

Modern nursery decor to welcome babies, without a princess crown or a train in sight.

It’s been a while since I found handmade modern nursery decor and crib bedding that made me yearn (almost) for an opportunity to redecorate a nursery, and I’ve definitely found it with the Ivie Baby Etsy Shop. You can choose from tons of modern designs. I think what I like best is how they’re all gender-neutral and free from baby room clichés; no ballerinas, no airplanes, no bunny rabbits. Those graphic grey and white crib sheets or lime green pillows are perfect for any baby who gets to spend those early months amidst a modern nursery — and are...

Handmade stone coasters that will make grownups out of us yet. Or…maybe not.

Their purpose may be pretty utilitarian, but I love how a really good set of coasters can embellish a table, almost like a piece of jewelry jazzing up a basic outfit. And the handmade Italian-stone coasters I spotted on Etsy at Meadow Tea would look much nicer on my coffee tables than the round cardboard coasters pilfered from the local bar. Yes, I still have those. Don’t judge. Meadow Tea’s Wood You stone coaster set (shown at top) includes four faux bois-style coasters with a crimson heart etched into the trunk of a tree; a very cool little anniversary gift or Valentine’s...

Sweet and simple: Apropos Roasters gifts and stocking stuffers

If you’re like me, there’s a bunch of people to whom you’d like to give a little something for the holidays, but they aren’t quite up to the level of say, a cashmere sweater. I usually whip up some handmade holiday food gifts in the kitchen, but to save time this year I might let Apropos Roasters do some of the work for me instead. I love their selection of individually packaged coffee, tea, and hot chocolate gifts, wrapped in plain brown paper and adorned with cheery stamped images and messages. So great for holiday gift giving to co-workers, carpool,...

Nina in Vorm: Modern meets vintage gifts at this cool Etsy shop.

I love the warmth and comfort that vintage pieces can express. They bring to mind a slower pace and remind me to focus on the moment and quit rushing so much. I need that sometimes. But there’s a really fine line between that  charming and out-of-touch, right? Polyester crocheted afghan? No. Modern screen printing on vintage china? Yes. Meet Nina van de Goor, a graphic designer based in the Netherlands who does some amazing work. She’s the perfect mix of whimsy and modern, and I’ve fallen in love with her whole shop, Ninainvorm. Nina designs some amazing poster prints, which...
