Vintage meets handmade meets gorgeous

I have a soft spot for stitch art and it’s not just because I live in the embroidery capital of the world (yes, there is such a place). As a gal who can’t even sew a button onto a pair of pants, I greatly admire those patient enough to create detailed designs out of those tedious little stitches. Designer Jamie Davis offers a fresh take on the use of embroidery with her line of vintage luggage pieces. Jamie refinishes her finds with sweet yarn stitching and updates the inner lining with retro inspired bold designs. One of my favorites is...

Owl love you forever

Owls are some seriously cool animals. They have big eyes, they’re nocturnal, and they “whoo.” They’re also the requisite cute kids motif of the decade, which you know if you’re an avid Cool Mom Picks reader. You know what’s cooler than an owl though? An owl with a tie and striped pants. Little DeMaura Designs has carefully crafted this little Owl Rag Doll, who’s made to withstand toddler strength with ease. I’d imagine your little dude or dudette will not be able to put this guy down. After all, artist Gina DeMaura would know–she also makes the toys for...

From the gulf stream waters to the redwood forest

My kids have always been fascinated by maps and globes, which I think is great. One of my greatest dreams is to raise children who love travel. So we love looking for postcards, artwork, and books that commemorate some of the places we’ve been. But I haven’t seen anything like this incredible papercut art. Layered papercut art from Crafterall would be cool if you don’t even realize they’re topographical maps and not abstractions. There’s everything from New Hampshire’s Lake Winnipesaukee where I spent my summer camp years, to the great island of Manhattan to a gorgeous blue and white...

An adorable illustration of your kid drawn just for you

Just when I thought I’d run out of original gift ideas, I came across an illustrator who will draw a ridiculously cute picture of your kid along with his or her favorite possession. There’s literally no kid’s room that these illustrations wouldn’t look good in. The talented illustrator behind Unless Someone Like You does custom kids’ art prints that feature a cherubic likeness of your child along with their name. What you do is send her details like your child’s name, hair color and item they love. She uses “archival pigment print” which in layman’s terms means it’s acid-free,...

Lovely leather for the ladies

Perusing Etsy has become an occupational hazard because I just end up finding more gorgeous handmade goodies that I swear are screaming my name. Such is the case with these beautiful leather bracelets that I can’t stop thinking about. I can’t quite decide which EmilydeMolly laser cut leather cuff I want. I’m not usually a flower person but the metallic gold rose cuff (pictured) is fantastic. But then my eye caught the red ornate cuff design which I like as well.  Oh, who am I kidding? I’d be happy with any of them. But at just $35, I might...

Creativity inside the box

I love living in Boston, but every once in a while something so great comes along that it gives me serious New York envy. The Moomah NYC creative arts cafe is one of those things. But for those of us not within taxi distance of their organic cafe, cool classes, and drop-in kids craft station, they’re offering some of their craft projects now in handy kits just in time for holiday gift-giving. These kits include everything — down to the kid’s scissors — so you can bring the arts home, or really, anywhere you go.  I love the Imagination Creation Do-It-Together...

Life is like a box of handmade snowflake ornaments

Because I live in the desert, snowflakes are as rare as… well, snowflakes in the desert. We dream of white Christmases but they don’t often happen. So snowflakes are my holiday totem, and I absolutely love how they’ve come together in this affordable, handmade set of wooden ornaments. The absolutely gorgeous mini snowflake ornaments collection from Timber Green Woods are the closest I’ll get to the real thing–and I’m perfectly content with that. Made with sustainable wood harvested from the company’s family farm, each unique design is laser-cut and finished with nontoxic oil. Then they’re all popped into an...

If you’re the type who likes to fill your holiday gifts with handmade love, we’ve got a whole bunch of beautiful ideas for you. But after looking at these 10 beautiful and interesting handmade gifts, I think maybe I could follow in her footsteps (in a good way) and create something of my own to give. Crafty moms? This one’s for you. –Christina 1. RETRO MAGNETIC PAPER DOLLSMy girls...

4 modern nativity sets, not one of which lights up

Though my religious affiliation can best be summed up with a long puzzled silence, there are certain things from my youth that I carry with me to this day, like praying when the plane jets down the runway, and setting up the nativity scene before Christmas. Our nativity set is a bit battered though, so I’ve been on the lookout for something a bit more contemporary to add to our decor this holiday season. Here, a few beautiful (and sometimes pretty funky) sets that may fit into your holiday as well. –Christina As a long time fan of the...

I couldn’t be more thrilled with the discovery of these sweet embroidered initial necklaces from Boston jewelry designer Danielle Spurge. In her Etsy shop, the Merriweather Council you can customize your own darling pendant from the background fabric and thread colors to the style of the lettering. It is just a perfect and adorable little gift appropriate for all ages being...

Sweaters like Grandma would make. Because a grandma did.

I feel like, every fall, I end up on on a mission to find handmade sweaters and other goodies that have that little extra bit of TLC knitted in. You know, like someone made them just for my kids Robbie Carmack of RCforkids is pretty much that someone. Her sweaters are the picture of vintage sweetness: just check out this kitten cardigan (can you stand how cute that cat button nestled in a fabric flower is?) and this crochet poncho in mohair yarn. What’s especially cool is that Carmack (whose granddaughter models the clothes on her site!) makes her gorgeous pieces from...

Just one dangerous flip through Etsy.com and I’ve got tons of things added to my favorites list just itching to be bought–which is the case with the amazing leather bags from Adeleshop. Beautiful ornaments with a past life.

Garfield has never been called elegant, nor is Snoopy considered stylish. And yet, in the right hands, the Sunday comics are being transformed into stunning holiday ornaments. The Sea Urchin Recycled Newspaper Ornament from kissadesign on Etsy is a fun new twist on traditional Polish folk art. In fact, the artist’s family has been hand-creating such decorations for over fifty years. This is serious crafting–each ornament includes eighty meticulously hand-formed points for a delicate and celestial look. Hang them from a tree, dangle them from a chandelier at a party, or even use them for a year-round splash of...

Sew you want to be in pictures

This holiday season, you can do almost anything with your fancy photos: make books, cards, puzzles, even an afghan. But we found one artist putting a beautiful homemade twist on capturing your family’s image, and we think this one’s worthy of framing. Etsy artist Norma Andreu of Cara Carmina uses your details to hand-stitch fabulous art collages of your family using her sewing machine as her brush and black thread as her ink. The results are intricate, unique, and gorgeous. You can choose the hair and clothes, not to mention the words or sayings stitched along the top. Buttons, hearts, and old book...

And a hug around the neck

When I came across this gorgeous lilac crochet scarf on Etsy, I just about clicked “add to cart” right on the spot. Good thing I didn’t because then I would have missed all the other beautiful colors. Brooklyn’s VitalTemptation is a name that pretty much says it all. I adore their handmade crochet scarf in vibrant colors like the purple, red, or emerald, but over a heather gray wool coat, that black one is pretty fabulous too. Perfect for this time of year when scarves tie an outfit together more than they keep the snow out of our v-necks....

No glove…

When the heat started clicking through the radiator this past week, I knew it was time to start trading the cotton for wool and bringing the gloves out of the back of the closet. The handknit gloves from Etsy’s Reflections By DS are making me mourn the loss of summer just a little less. While I love the look of the mohair fingerless gloves and cowl set, I’d have to save them for non-child days. (Not sure how well they’d hold up against the velcro of diaper bags.) For every day, I’m totally digging those wool fingerless gloves in...
