A tropical trend: pineapple clothes for kids are fashion’s fruit du jour

If my preschooler had his druthers, all of his shirts would be emblazoned with construction vehicles or superheroes. Luckily, he doesn’t have 100% control over his wardrobe, which means I can introduce fun prints and patterns. And this season, I’m all about pineapples. Yes, the tropical fruit is trending in kids’ fashion, giving everything from socks to dresses to denim shorts a relaxed beachy vibe. Since summer break is still weeks away, what kid couldn’t use a little vacation inspiration right now? Here are a few fun pieces that I’m really liking for kids. CMP is an rstyle affiliate   The...

She had me at Hashbrown: No Filter

Kimmy Schmidt fans (Me! Me!) will rejoice at the discovery of embroidery hoop art featuring my own favorite quote of 2015 thus far: Hashbrown: No Filter. Hey, can’t beat an Instagram inside joke making a hot new Netflix series. Oh, and if you haven’t seen The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt? You need to do that. Right after you check out this Etsy shop. Thread Honey features the kind of embroidery hoop art that go right up to the line of irreverence — and perhaps crosses it for some of you. As for me, I’m giggling at one more than the next. But it’s not...

Reusable personalized birthday banners that you’ll want to look at more than once a year.

As much as I love party decorations, I hate throwing them out at the end of the day. I don’t even like throwing out paper tablecloths, after they’re torn, which, I know. My own issue. So I always love finding party decor that can be reused. I think the reusable personalized birthday banners from our friends at Blue Without You Kids are just adorable. The Etsy shop is known for their handmade soft mobiles and gorgeous but affordable embroidery hoop art, so banners seem to be a perfect addition to the line. While there are some cool handmade pennant buntings and a really...

Move over cutesie nursery art, plush taxidermy is taking over.

When papier-mâché animal heads began popping up on blogs a few years ago, I wasn’t completely sold on the trend of faux taxidermy as children’s decor. Sure, they were a million times less creepy than the real deal, but they didn’t seem playful enough for a kid’s bedroom. On the other hand, the plush taxidermy from Kelsey Davis Design are the perfect mix of wit and whimsy. If had a nursery to decorate, I’d place my order today.  All of the creatures she makes would be adorable over a crib or a dresser, but the crown-wearing lion and vintage-patterned pig are my two favorites. Related: Zoo portrait clocks that will have you laughing.   The wall mounts...

The tote bags that could get your kids to carry their own stuff

Lately I’ve been asking my kids to be responsible for carrying their own things to practices, school, playdates—pretty much everywhere. It’s not an easy task, as some days a headband or bookmark is a burden to heavy for them to lift. (Cue violins.) But I’m thinking these adorable illustrated tote bags we found from the Etsy shop Sobiegraphie might help get them excited about carrying their stuff around so I don’t have to. We love them so much, we even included the unicorn tote among the coolest birthday gifts for tweens and big kids, in our Ultimate Birthday Party Gift Guide.     Kids shouldn’t get...

Courtney Courtney: Now one more way to get your hands on our favorite girls’ dresses. If you’re quick.

At a time we’re seeing some of our favorite small artists abandon Etsy for their own storefronts, we’re thrilled to see one of our all-time favorite makers, Courtney Courtney, back there again, giving us one more place to shop in addition to the Courtney Courtney shop on Big Cartel. Kristen and I may each own more of her amazing handmade dresses for our kids than anyone else in the world, and every day our kids put them on it gives us joy. While other artists have tried the whole upcycled t-shirts turned into dresses thing, no one we’ve ever seen does it quite...

A life without coffee? Unimaginable.

Suddenly I get all of Delilah’s posts about making coffee with a Chemex and how every drop of effort is worth every drop of coffee you get; at least ever since my unexpected turn (if you ask those who know me best)  from K-Cup coffee drinker to full-fledged coffee devotee. I never thought I’d say things like “wow, the crema on that espresso is really amazing.” And yes, I know it sounds kind of douchey so I don’t say it out loud when actual people are around. Because I’m also picky about good design, I have to give huge props to these...

10 of the most outrageous gender reveal party ideas. Cool or just…whoa.

It seems the days of simply announcing whether your baby is a boy or girl seem to be long gone. The latest trend in baby showers that shows no signs of waning is the gender reveal party — personalized, meticulously planned, sometimes messy events with executions that can be so time-consuming, we can only imagine that these ideas are conceived by parents who know they will never, ever have this much free time available to them ever again. On one hand, we have to say we’re wildly impressed with the creativity. On the other hand, you kind of have to ask yourself honestly whether there are actually more than...

A fun tissue holder to get kids smiling through the phlegm.

Kids will always have runny noses. Always. So I’m all for adding a little fun to the dreaded Parental Nose Wipe with this adorable Whale Tissue Holder we spotted at Etsy shop ShopSparklyPony. We think that kids’ tissue holders can be a little corny at times,  but this little whale is a charming work of art. Lovingly hand crafted and–get this– “individually tested for proper tissue-release,” each whale is stamped, dated, signed and numbered so you know your Moby Dick is an original. Because you know that’s just the kind of thing that kids care about when they’re home with a miserable cold....

9 very creative Valentine’s cookies on Etsy. In case you’d rather spend your time on….other things.

I absolutely love homemade treats for Valentine’s Day, but not all of us have the time–or the talent, speaking for myself loudly and clearly. Also, shipping cookies yourself to a loved one who’s out of town can be less than ideal, as I once discovered firsthand. So I started looking around Etsy for some creative Valentine’s cookies and wow! There is so much talent and ingenuity out there that goes beyond heart-shaped sugar cookies. So I put together some of my very favorites, all of which support small bakers around the country. Also, small gyms around the country. At least if you plan on eating all these cool...

Personalized Valentines cards with extra heart

I know that for some couples out there, when it comes to Valentine’s Day, it’s the card that counts. So I’m always searching for really special V-Day cards that could make special gifts all on their own. I recently spotted these lovely, made-to-order personalized Valentine’s cards from EKRA, on Etsy and I’m really taken with them. The heavy cut cardstock cover features your two names on front, and a red or pink heart behind. It’s totally the kind of thing I could see saving on a shelf in the bedroom for a good long time, or if you’re sentimental, framing.  Don’t forget to write a...

Don’t know much about geometry

With the Etsy artists starting to see a decline in visits since the homepage redesign (we have trouble with it too, sigh) you can expect to see a lot more of our favorite Etsy finds here, as well as a new, weekly Etsy find of the week delivered right to your inbox if you subscribe to Cool Mom Picks. We’ve always been so pleased to be able to support the kinds of smaller designers who set up shop there, and one of my newest finds is small indeed: Gwyneth Hulse Design, a cool New Zealand jewelry and housewares shop which offers only a few handcrafted items. But...

6 easy kids dresser label tricks. A.K.A. how to keep your kids from wearing swimsuits in a snowstorm. Maybe.

I have come across a few little design hack ideas to help keep my kids’ overflowing drawers a little less so–and hopefully, in the process, keep the seven year-old from grabbing the tye-died tank top and gym shorts when it’s 10-degrees and snowing outside. 1. For kids of reading age, you can order custom drawer labels like these nice ones from 3rd Ave Shore on Etsy, shown above. You can of course name them by clothing category, or give them labels like cold weather, warm weather, socks and undies. Depending on how many clothes you have, of course. Around here, we need...

Because you can never have too many Moleskine journals. Especially cute handmade ones.

As a writer, I’m of the mind that you can never have too many journals or blank books on hand. I stockpile them like a zombie apocalypse conspiracy theorist, hoarding canned goods and ammo. But unlike gunshot, they also happen to make great impromptu gifts. So I love the made-to-order, illustrated, handmade Moleskine journals from Elena Mazzali of Etsy shop La Douceur du Miel (“The sweetness of honey”). This plain, unlined journal is just made for recipes, honey-based or otherwise. But the other journals–which the artist cleverly calls “Mieleskins”–are pretty great too. Like a bear rocking out to a Beatles cassette....

Dream a little dream of dragons, bats, and narwhals.

Now you can put your baby to sleep with visions of fantasy dragons, hedgehogs, and even adorable bats (yes, they’re a thing) in her head. The handmade baby mobiles from Bee Janie Baby Mobiles feature all these creatures and more. You guys, they even have a mythical beasts mobile—you know, in case you have a Game of Thrones nursery in the works. Each mobile is handmade from felt, and most have somewhat unexpected creatures for a baby’s room. I mean, have you ever seen a mobile with bats before—the sleeping-in-caves kind, not the baseball kind? Me either, but I want one now. The...

What’s our angle? These cool origami-inspired stained glass necklaces.

We’re big fans of unconventional jewelry that will get noticed when we wear it. And I have to admit, I’m a little jealous of our editor Kristen’s amazing necklaces. That’s why I’m geeking out about these bold stained glass necklaces from Here and Now Shop on Etsy. They’re so very modern with an industrial vibe, but simple and pretty enough to go with most any outfit, which is an important selling point for me. There’s something special about having handmade jewelry made just for me, but the things I find are usually at a price point I can’t afford. That’s another thing that’s wowing me about these...

Beating the winter blahs with a shot of color to your table

Lately, I love the idea of my dinner table feeling coordinated but not entirely matchy-matchy. And then I saw these gorgeous handmade cloth napkins at the Shapes Colors Etsy shop and thought, yes! Just like that! The artist, San Francisco mom Samantha Cisneros, screenprints them each by hand with bright, colorful, eco-friendly ink in colors like fuchsia, milt, and cobalt. And while you can buy them each individually–or a set that matches–I kind of like the idea of having all six that are different. It’s a nice way to brighten the table during the winter blahs (that’s an actual...
