I’ve always been a fan of Nordstrom. The company pays their employees well, they offer a lot of flexibility to part-time or telecommuting workers (like parents), they’ve lead the way with strong anti-discrimination policies, and they always make the Fortune list of the top 100 companies to work for. Plus, best customer service. (Especially you bra fitters in the White Plains store. Yeah, you!) And if you’re online…free shipping! So I thought it was a good day to do a little online window shopping and check out some of the hot new spring shoes I’d love from Nordstrom right now. A little...Read More
Our friend Christine Koh, she of the wonderful gold personalized unicorn tee (featured as one of our favorite cool birthday gifts for tweens and tweens) is at it again. Her shop, which features beautifully designed advocacy tees each supporting an excellent cause, now has two new designs with 20% of the proceeds going to one of our favorite orgs, the ACLU Nationwide. Check out the shop for the fierce Rise Up tee and the gold stamped Equality tee, both of which I love so much…well, considering the cause, the designs themselves, and the opportunity to support an indie maker mom with my purchase,...Read More
The good thing about living down South is that I can wait until the last minute to buy snow boots for my kids, when they’re all on sale! And when you’re buying four sets of winter snow gear, those savings help a lot. That said, all of these kids’ winter boots on sale are ones we’d buy even if they were full priced, because we’ve tested these brands and they’ve lasted us not just through one or two brutal winters, but long enough to pass down through a few kids. So even at full price, that’s a pretty great value. But...Read More
When Pantone announced their 2017 color of the year, I admit I wasn’t entirely sold on Greenery, a bright springy, yellowy green that seemed to come out of nowhere. But after reading the backstory, I get it: After a difficult year for so many people, both socially and politically, Greenery is Pantone’s effort to offer a symbol of growth, health, and new beginnings. That said, I don’t think Greenery is the kind of color that looks great on everyone, the way 2016’s Rose Quartz or 2015’s Mykonos Blue did. And that’s where accessories come in. If your family’s holiday schedule is anything like mine, and you have daughters, you know why I’m looking for sparkly holiday dresses for girls right now. I have a calendar full of holiday parties, recitals, school concerts, and a gazillion other special events coming up, all excuses for my daughter to get fancy. But with a budget that doesn’t allow for a whole wardrobe of holiday dresses, I’ve been searching for a fun, sparkly dress that she can wear more than once, from holiday parties to New Year’s Eve with lots of playdates and family visits in between. Weather experts from Europe to the US are warning us to brace ourselves for the coldest winter in years…again. So, when life gives you snow, I say go shopping for a great pair of snow boots! When it comes to a good snow boot, I want something that will keep my feet warm and dry when I’m trudging through snow and slush, or just tip-toeing through those massive puddles that accumulate at street corners after a storm. But I want them to feel comfortable and look at least as cool as I can in sturdy winter boots. Not too much to ask, right? So I’ve...Read More
I don’t know about the rest of the country, but down here in Nashville we went from about 80-degree days to 30-degree mornings overnight. And before I knew it, I was fumbling through our coat closets to pull out last year’s jackets for the kids to bundle up in on their way to school. And now, I’m scanning all of my favorite shops online to find some great deals on new winter coats for this year — since the 3/4 length arms on last year’s coats won’t quite cut it when the really cold weather hits. Since winter weather can be so dreary...Read More

Freshly Picked Marketplace: The new indie marketplace you need to bookmark for your holiday shopping
When Kristen and Liz started Cool Mom Picks, their desire was to highlight cool, indie shops that make innovative products with fresh ideas for kids and families. A decade later, that’s still our driving passion, and the chic handmade baby moccasins at Freshly Picked is one of our favorite indie shops to recommend for baby gifts. We’ve always loved Susan Petersen’s eye for style, and now she’s using that to highlight other small businesses too, with the Freshly Picked Marketplace. This online community is a hub of small shops curated by Susan, and when I browsed through the site I immediately added gifts from each one to my holiday shopping...Read More
For the last few years, we’ve been loving the Navajo-inspired designs in everything from jewelry to home decor, and so it’s no surprise we are big fans of the fringe trend for fall that we’re seeing on gorgeous handbags from top designers to way more affordable ones on Amazon. And we love that it works for any budget. Depending on your personal style and budget, you can make a big, bold statement with all-over fringe on a designer handbag or go for a more simple look by adding a fringed tassel to your favorite bag. Even if you’re like me and a bit hesitant to buy a...Read More
