We’ve seen some pretty spectacular kids’ toys made out of cardboard, from those beautifully designed cardboard food truck playhouses we recently shared, to pirate ships and toy castles. And now we’re loving the cardboard furniture from the Cardboard Guys which was recently funded through a successful Kickstarter campaign. Their inventive, smartly designed kid-sized cardboard desk and chair gives our kids a great place to work and to create. This assembly-challenged parent is very thankful to hear that putting the five to six pieces together for each component is really simple and requires no adhesives or emergency trips to the hardware store for supplies. Just snap the recyclable...Read More
Keeping the playroom clean is a regular battle at our house, and I’m ready for a truce. But when I start to get sick of the mess, I usually turn to storage bins as my go-to method for keeping clutter to a minimum. It’s a system that’s easy enough for my kids follow when they clean up—they just dump their toys in the bins. And it works for me, because I don’t see a mess everywhere. Lately, I’ve added the modern shelving and storage bins from Sprout Kids to my wish list. If you’re looking for an IKEA Kallax storage system alternative, take a look at...Read More
I’ve purchased six Expedit storage units from IKEA for our three-child house, so you can imagine my shock when I discovered that they were no longer selling what I consider their most versatile, affordable, and useful storage solution for families. Turns out that the new IKEA Kallax storage system is actually the Expedit system, with a makeover and name change. Hooray! The furniture looks very similar to Expedit, which is good news for those of us who want to add more coordinating pieces. But Kallax has some neat features for families, like slightly rounded edges to make it a bit safer around young kids, and a more durable finish...Read More
On a day that I’ll take any rays of happiness to brighten up a dreary, snowy day, I smiled the moment I stumbled on the bear and rabbit play chairs by Oeuf furniture–makers of the most beautiful, modern kids furniture. In either a light birch or a dark walnut, the animal shape of the chairs is irresistible. It’s like the best of both worlds–kid-friendly furniture that actually fits into the modern decor of an adult room, too. The total chair height is 24 inches, with the seat about 13-inches off the ground. So it’s probably best for kids in the 2-6 range....Read More
It’s that time of year, so I was looking back at our post on colorful toy storage options, and came across the toy chests from Drift Studio. (Thanks, Christina!) So I clicked over to see what was new, and wow. As much as this Brooklyn mama loves the Brooklyn maps toy chest that we originally featured, I really dig the other toy chest designs from this Wisconsin based studio, too. From geometric patterns and graphic jungle animals to retro-toy designs like paper airplanes or jacks, there’s definitely something for any decor. Or hey, maybe it will inspire the decor theme to begin with. Each chest is gorgeously handcrafted–with a...Read More
There’s nothing quite like seeing your child pick up a book and read it to himself for the first time. And even though we’ve been known to tell our kids to putdownthatbookrightnow! when we’re trying to get them out the door for school, we secretly love that kind of reading obsession. Even if your kid isn’t paging through Moby Dick—or even Mo Willems—yet, you can foster that love of learning early. So on behalf of our newest partner P’kolino, a company we’ve loved and supported for ages, we’ve put together some of our top tips to help make reading fun, so your pre-reader will be on her...Read More
From the woman who tells us everything that’s “a good thing,” there are now ten more good things for us all to discover via the Martha Stewart American Made 2014 winners. Here’s just a few we’re amazingly impressed with. Kalon Studios: Michaele Simmering and Johann Pauwen’s gorgeous modern furniture is all designed in LA and US-made. From a gorgeous handmade crib we recently featured in our black and white nursery roundup, to a modern play tent and plenty of modern craft furniture for adults, we’re coveting all of it. 10 completely over-the-top, absolutely gorgeous, seriously splurgy baby gifts for a lucky kid (that’s not ours)
One of the obvious—and awesome—perks of writing for Cool Mom Picks is that I get to scope out the newest, coolest products for moms. And sometimes, those products fall into the I-can-only-dream, outrageously chic, over-the-top gorgeous category. Then again, sometimes we get emails make us ask, are these for real? Here are ten seriously splurgy baby gifts I’ve seen lately, in no particular order. If you’re a 90201-er or $4500 for a crib doesn’t blow your mind, have fun. My wish list can be your shopping list. 1. Silver Cross Kensington Pram Stroller, $2,750 Feel like Kate Middleton when you stroll your baby around town; she has one...Read More
Changing your child’s room from an infant’s nursery to a kid’s functional bedroom doesn’t have to be a long (and expensive) project for modern style-and-design conscious parents. In fact, Cool Mom Picks’ favorite P’kolino’s new Little Modern Collection has enough kids’ furniture pieces to help you outfit an entire room easier than it takes to get a squirmy toddler into footsie pajamas at bedtime. P’kolino’s Little Modern toddler bed is such a nice-looking piece of furniture with clean lines and a neutral color palette that goes with everything. I also appreciate nice touches like built-in handrails to keep kids tucked in safely and the hidden storage...Read More
When are utilitarian storage units for kids the most stunning pieces of furniture in the whole room? When they are these gorgeously original Amsterdam Cabinets from This is Dutch. Modeled after Amsterdam’s iconic canal houses, these 78″ tall cabinets would be the centerpiece of any cool bedroom or playroom. They come in 11 different colors and three different gable designs on top so that you could theoretically have an entire cityscape filled with books. Dutch books maybe?. Of course I say theoretically because at almost $1,300 a pop, this is definitely not affordable design for most of our budgets, but we can dream, can’t...Read More
I remember getting that last big piece of furniture for my house–years after moving in, of course–and thinking, “Finally, this is it!” It took no time to realize that a house truly comes together in the small, pretty details–at least the ones that the kids don’t destroy. My umbrella stand is one of the lovely accents that brings me a lot of joy and does an important job. Bonus: it doesn’t break easily. Check out these fab umbrella stands to add a touch of color, whimsy, or design to any size or style of entry way. Traditional Umbrella...Read More
I got a brief taste of spring this past week and that’s only made me hungry for more outdoor time. (Oh, how I envy my LA friends who apologize profusely when the temperature dips to 64.) One look at these Acapulco Multi-Colored Lounge Chairs at CB2 and I knew I had to have them. The retro-modern shape of classic Acapulco chairs is so fabulous to begin with, but the handwoven color block cords are what really pulled me in. And the price is not bad, considering I’ve seen similar for twice as much. Now I just need a big...Read More
They’ve been telling us for years that stability balls (or yoga balls) are the way to go for better posture and concentration, but if you’ve tried to use one, you know that they tend to roll all over the place, take up a lot of space, pick up filth like fly tape, and turn into a toy for tiny people and four-legged friends. Good news, everybody: The ErgoErgo chair gives your kids–and you–all the benefits of a stability ball without the sticky-roly-poly-playfulness. And it’s cute, too. The ErgoErgo is an adorable way to include active sitting in your lifestyle,...Read More
You can’t buy your kid a life-sized AT-AT or landspeeder. But you can give them the coolest Star Wars-themed book shelf we’ve ever seen. This AT-AT Imperial Bookcase from WhittledinWood on Etsy is a masterpiece of engineering. Handmade of birch plywood, it’s made to order in Vidor, Texas and arrives raw and unpainted. The cool thing is that the company can make a bookcase out of almost anything your heart desires–the website currently shows this AT-AT, a Millennium Falcon, an unbelievable tree, and the Incredible Hulk. The prices aren’t as insane as they could be for bespoke geek furniture,...Read More
We’re always happy when one of our favorite companies surprises us with a cool new design. P’kolino has done just that with a perfect new perch for your favorite little reader. Leave it to one of our favorite brands to win us over again with their new Reader Children’s Chair. We know that the junior version, The Little Reader Chair, is wildly popular with the toddler crowd. But now kids 4 and up can get in on the cozy action with the “grown-up” version (should 4 be grown-up), in bold, graphic new styles and patterns. I’m partial to the cool...Read More
We love it when reeeeeally wonderful things go on sale…especially when we’ve been eyeing them for months. Naturally, we want to share the joy with our readers, and this fantastic opportunity is one we’d hate for you to miss. The gorgeous Owyn Toy Box and Maude Toy Box (pictured above) from Mod Mom Furniture are two of our favorite kids’ furniture pieces ever. The design is beautiful, and the craftsmanship makes these toy boxes instant heirlooms. The finish is water-based, the shipping is free, and they arrive fully assembled. Amazing. Plus, Mod Mom Furniture donates 5% of the retail...Read More
I have always loved the beautiful lines of DucDuc nursery furniture which gives parents so many more modern options for their babies. And as a little local Brooklyn company, I’m really thrilled to see their exclusive new collection at Land of Nod. DucDuc for Land of Nod isn’t a cheap kids’ furniture collection, but it sure is a great investment. In fact, the DucDuc Verona Crib converts to a toddler bed, and then a full-size bed which means you’ll get years and years of use out of it even without having to have six kids. That’s more than I can...Read More
A couple of weeks ago, I moved from Atlanta to Philadelphia and discovered that my new lovely rental home did not have a linen closet. I was about to just stuff my family’s towels and sheets in my own closet when I had the opportunity to ask Martha Stewart (yes, her!) a question and voila, I knew exactly what I needed her help with. Take a peek at her smart suggestion, as well as what I came up with to help make her magic happen in my own home. –Kristen Now, I love the idea of folding towels...Read More
It’s a clever storage container, a cozy chair, a toy, an ottoman…and it looks just like a giant French cookie. What’s not to love? The Storage Bean Bag from Mimish Designs combines almost everything we look for in furniture: hip design, a useful home organization tool, a cozy place to sit, an object that intrigues children to spark imaginative play…and, okay, the looks of a delicious macaron cookie. (Not to be confused with macaroon.) Available in 14 vibrant colors, each chair is made in the USA of microfiber and cotton, so it’s comfy, it’s filled with post-consumer recycled “beans”,...Read More
For years now, Oeuf has been known for its beautiful, modern nursery furniture that’s meant to last. I’m personally a huge fan of their Perch Bunk Bed (visit us sometime and see it in action) still could use the Oeuf Toy Store to wrangle the 8 zillion little toy pieces we have all over the place. Now, they have a brand new crib that is simply awesome. And not a zillion dollars either. While the new Oeuf Elephant Crib is not an IKEA $199 special, it’s not a mortgage payment either. Especially because the key aspect of the design...Read More
