The ABCs of Game of Thrones: A is for Arya

Hi, my name is Liz and I’m obsessed with Game of Thrones. So I’m cheering that the show has earned 24 well-deserved Emmy nominations — though oddly, no nods for comedy after that really bizarre Sandsnake fight scene in Dorne. In any case, while our children may be too young to watch the show (I told mine that 30 was an appropriate age), they’re not too young to know that W is for Winterfell. Or White Walker. Or, WHAT THE $&*!-ING  $&^%! which is pretty much what I screamed as the closing credits rolled after every episode this past season. Okay, maybe kids are a little young for that...

Web Coolness: How to raise nice kids, Game of Thrones fashion, and the Gwen Stefani photo that rocked Instagram

Here are our favorite links from around the web that we’ve enjoyed reading this week. Hope you like them too.   Well. This photo of Gwen Stefani breastfeeding sure got a lot of discussion going. An outstanding (and hilarious) post on what it means to be a feminist. We’d expect no less from Jenny Lawson. Our editor Liz has lots of thoughts about mothers being arrested for letting their children play or walk  alone.   Fascinating: Nate Silver and Allison McCann explain how you can tell someone’s age just from their name. This app is changing the way we watch Netflix for the better. (Much better.) Why you...

8 of the most amazing DIY snowflake patterns, from beginner to whoa.

DIY snowflake patterns have such a place in my heart. When my grandfather would come visit from New Mexico when I was a kid, the first thing he’d do after he pulled his big RV into the driveway was grab a gin and tonic and some copy paper, then sit down with us to cut out paper snowflakes. But they’ve come a long way since then, so  I’m so glad to have found these amazing tutorials that show how truly creative you can get with paper and some scissors. But maybe hold the gin. (For the kids, at least.)...

Game of (very small) Thrones

Winter is coming, but it’s going to be much shorter than usual. Or at least the characters will, and not just the Imp. We’re seriously freaking out over these amazing custom Lego Minifigs inspired by Game of Thrones. This “Throne of Bricks” five-pack includes The Imp, Underfoot, Warden of the North, The Bastard, and Mother of Dragons. Which translates to Tyrion Lannister, Arya Stark, Ned Stark, Jon Snow, and Daenerys Targaryen. And...
