Earth Day Pick – PaperStatement art and jewelry

Discovering the Paper Statement Etsy shop was like looking at your own perceived craftiness in the mirror and laughing at it. I am absolutely blown away by the things true artists can do out of paper and cardboard. The first thing that caught my eye from German artist Dorisse is this very cool paper necklace made from corrugaged paper beads. It looks great with multi-colors like this, but the simple natural beads or single-color options are pretty amazing too. [see more incredible paper jewelry and sculptures after the jump] Really impressive book sculpture. Statement bracelet from paper beads. Very...

Earth Day Pick – Eco friendly wooden toys

On Earth Day or any day, I love the feeling a wooden toy creates; fresh, clean and perfect for a creative little mind. It’s no secret we are fans of Little Sapling’s all-natural wood toys. Now the husband and wife team, Nick and Kimber, have done it again with this charming little piece just added to their collection. The wooden toy camera makes it pretty obvious why the Christensens have the top selling toy shop on Etsy. (Not that we don’t have other favorites, of course.) It’s an excellent, original gift idea for the kid who has everything or for your...

Earth Day Pick – Kiwi Crate’s green boxes

When I first read about Kiwi Crate’s monthly craft subscriptions (here, in fact), I couldn’t wait to gift one to my niece. She clapped in delight each time her box arrived because she knew it’d be packed with fun, engaging, and lovely activities that were perfect for her four-year-old hands. And now that Kiwi Crate has announced some new boxes–two of which seem perfect to mention on this Earth Day–I can’t wait to sign my niece up for a few more. Kiwi Crate’s monthly boxes come jam-packed with loads of activities built around a certain theme, and their fun/educational gardening theme...

Growing edibles just got easy. Like black-thumb-proof easy.

Grow-it-yourself is the new do-it-yourself. Unfortunately, I tend have the touch of death for plants. But you know what? I didn’t let looking awful in denim overalls stop me from wearing them throughout the 90’s, so I haven’t let being plant kryptonite stop me from growing my own juicy tomatoes and fresh herbs.  I’ve got a black-thumb-proof plan for growing edibles this season so that I can cook with homegrown herbs and produce. And, you know, hang with the GIY cool kids–also known as the hungry boy and his hungry brother. Determined to grow, too? Here’s what to do...

Easter eggs almost as natural as the ones that come out of a chicken

Every year, I try to find more eco-friendly alternatives to the ubiquitous plastic Easter eggs. And while I have seen reusable wood eggs and lovely handmade felt ones to fill, they can be pricey if you have to buy more than a few. This year, though, there is finally a real alternative that look just like those plastic eggs, but have a secret ingredient: Corn. Made here in the USA and started by candy-company owner and mama of two, Christine Lantinen, eco eggs look just like those plastic eggs we’ve hidden in the grass, bushes and trees for years. Only these...

Natural craft supplies that are as beautiful as what your kids create

As a mom, some of my fondest moments with my kids are creating arts and crafts together.  I’ve never met a kid that doesn’t like to get their little hands involved in a project–all the more reason I care about what ends up on those little hands. Introducing GLOB, makers of creative and beautiful craft supplies that are naturally made. The  paints and crayons all come from natural and biodegradable materials–even the paint cups are compostable.  So my kids will not only get a lesson in art, but one in conservation.   I also love that GLOB specializes in botanically crafted...

Customized coffee mugs for keeps

I’ve always loved coffee, but it took becoming a mother to truly appreciate the wonder that is take-out coffee. Yes, the coffee is more expensive than if I made it myself, but my daily latte is an indulgence I allow myself for a few minutes of peace. However, there is one thing about my little coffee habit that’s been bothering me: All those paper cups can’t be good for the planet. In fact 500 billion disposable cups are made every year. So I’ve been looking for the perfect reusable cup. Enter KeepCup: barista-approved, thoughtfully-designed, BPA-free, reusable coffee cups. Pick your...

The coolest new water bottle on the block

I fully admit to drinking way more bottled water than I should, even though I’m aware of how bad the plastic is for the environment, let alone the risk of water that’s been marinating in chemicals used to produce said plastic. But now I’ve found alternative that could truly change my water-drinking habits forever. I just discovered the incredibly cool looking glass bkr bottles and have fallen in love. Although the concept of a reusable bottle is not exactly earth-shattering, the people behind bkr have managed to get me excited about just that. Yes, it’s made of glass, which...
