The best best friend gift for a Wonder Woman in your life

When I saw these Wonder Woman cuffs (excuse me…Wonder Woman inspired cuffs) from artist Jaq Jones, I added them to our own shop faster than you can spin around three times and find yourself wearing a sexy strapless leotard and red vinyl go-go boots. By the artist’s own admission they are a little costumey, so I wouldn’t wear both at once. But I love the idea of grabbing one for yourself and giving one to a great friend. Like a new interpretation of a friendship bracelet. Only it won’t fall apart after 6 weeks of swim lessons at summer camp. Or hey,...

A tropical trend: pineapple clothes for kids are fashion’s fruit du jour

If my preschooler had his druthers, all of his shirts would be emblazoned with construction vehicles or superheroes. Luckily, he doesn’t have 100% control over his wardrobe, which means I can introduce fun prints and patterns. And this season, I’m all about pineapples. Yes, the tropical fruit is trending in kids’ fashion, giving everything from socks to dresses to denim shorts a relaxed beachy vibe. Since summer break is still weeks away, what kid couldn’t use a little vacation inspiration right now? Here are a few fun pieces that I’m really liking for kids. CMP is an rstyle affiliate   The...

For those planning some hipster 19th century throwback industrial chic decor touches for the kid’s room

Sometimes we just see one cool little bit of kid’s room or nursery decor that’s so clever, we can’t help but share. In this case, it’s the hand-crocheted vintage lightbulbs by Australia’s La Dee Dah Kids. I’m partial to the yellow one myself, which adds that kind of Williamsburg hipster, Edison lightbulb-peppered industrial design style to a child’s room. And you know, that’s a style you might not have considered when you were first picking out cribs.   Just choose from white or the yellow I really love, tether it to a hook from the wall you’re good to go. It’s even washable, should there be...

Freshly Picked Moccasins for kids and babies get funky for spring

When we I first met Susan Petersen four years ago and discovered her start-up Freshly Picked Moccasins — well, wow. We knew her totally handmade in the US moccasins were truly special. What we didn’t know is that her brand would grow into a major empire with oh, like a hundred zillion Instagram fans and a whole catalog of styles and accessories, thanks in part to a successful appearance on Shark Tank. We also didn’t know that we would end up with so many pitches from brands completely knocking off Susan’s designs so closely, they get an instant delete from me. (You know who you are, ahem.)...

Here are some of our favorite links from around the web this week. We hope you enjoy them too.   We’re so excited to launch our 10th (!) annual Mother’s Day gift guide. This video with Sean Hayes (of Will and Grace fame) is our new favorite thing on the Internet. (via Isabel Kallman) A frustrated mom looking for the fabric with the two female Big Hero Six characters sparks a movement to encourage toymakers and manufacturers to #IncludetheGirls. Such an important read: Why an award winning principal feels she must retire early. Lots of great reasons to shop indie this Mother’s...

Because girls like dinosaurs. And well, boys like purple.

I just love when parents get fired up about not being able to find the kinds of off-the-beaten-path things their girls are interested in. Because really, that just inspires entrepreneurs to come up with such things and now we all get to reap the benefits. Such is the case with everything at mom-run shop Nawi Kids. – Don’t miss an exclusive discount below –  Moms Nas and Whitney started their company years ago when Whitney’s daughter was potty training and into dinosaurs. Surprise, there was no dinosaur underwear for girls anywhere to be found. So, smart mom that she is, Whitney decided she...

5 gorgeous photo gifts for Mother’s Day that are worthy of the photos

We’ve always said that some of our favorite Mother’s Day gifts are personalized, and well, you can’t get more personalized than photos of your own kids and family. Of course, not all photo gifts are created equal. (Sorry, badly printed photo mugs.) That’s where Artifact Uprising comes in, a wonderful small company that we — and our readers! — have truly loved even before they became our newest sponsor. And we are so thrilled to continue to support them. These are folks who are driven by the belief that everyone has a story to tell, and we couldn’t agree...

She had me at Hashbrown: No Filter

Kimmy Schmidt fans (Me! Me!) will rejoice at the discovery of embroidery hoop art featuring my own favorite quote of 2015 thus far: Hashbrown: No Filter. Hey, can’t beat an Instagram inside joke making a hot new Netflix series. Oh, and if you haven’t seen The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt? You need to do that. Right after you check out this Etsy shop. Thread Honey features the kind of embroidery hoop art that go right up to the line of irreverence — and perhaps crosses it for some of you. As for me, I’m giggling at one more than the next. But it’s not...

Give us a kiss

Ever since I saw these amazing kiss necklaces at the Architectural Digest Home Show a few weeks ago, I can’t get them out of my head. They’re really wearable art, and I still still can’t believe I had the willpower to not grab one when I saw her at the show. Fortunately I found I can grab them online. Hand-cast by Los Angeles artist Elyse Graham, each bold, modern piece is made from colorful shades of urethane, which has a light, resin-like feel to it. Definitely more substantial than plastic, and with beautiful chains to match. But if you’re like me and happen to be obsessed...

Handmade kid-sized hammocks that rock. In both senses.

When my kids try climbing onto the huge woven rope hammock in their grandparents’  back yard, it inevitably flips over and leaves them dangling inches above the ground, hanging on underneath for dear life. It’s so hilarious. I mean…awful. Right, it’s awful. Either way, it’s not nearly as relaxing in awesome kid-sized hammocks from Sluice. This Etsy shop-turned-small-business out of North Carolina (where they know a thing or two about getting outdoors and enjoying nature) creates handmade hammocks that hold up to 400 pounds. Just in case the whole family wants to enjoy an al fresco nap together. But what I like is the Hammie, a kid-sized hammock, which makes it easier...

It might seem a little early to be looking for Mother’s Day gift ideas, but not if you’re looking for something super special or personalized. So we’re so happy she’s joined us as our newest sponsor. (Yay!) What started as a creative outlet for mom of four and designer is now a thriving shop full of lovely jewelry and keepsakes, every single one made by hand in her Oklahoma studio. 19 very (very) special non-candy Easter basket gifts kids will love.

Between school parties and Easter baskets from their grandparents, my kids will be coming home with chocolate bunnies and cream-filled eggs to last us till the Fourth of July. So I’ve been looking for some extra special Easter basket gifts for kids that go beyond what you might find on your drugstore shelves. They’re perfect for those of you who want to ease up on the sugar; or for kids like ours, who are already going to have more than their fill from other sources. Mix them in with some traditional Easter fare (it is hard to resist jellybeans after all), or limit...

Reusable personalized birthday banners that you’ll want to look at more than once a year.

As much as I love party decorations, I hate throwing them out at the end of the day. I don’t even like throwing out paper tablecloths, after they’re torn, which, I know. My own issue. So I always love finding party decor that can be reused. I think the reusable personalized birthday banners from our friends at Blue Without You Kids are just adorable. The Etsy shop is known for their handmade soft mobiles and gorgeous but affordable embroidery hoop art, so banners seem to be a perfect addition to the line. While there are some cool handmade pennant buntings and a really...

The hottest shoes for babies this spring? Lizard, dahling.

It isn’t quite what you might imagine when you think of lizard shoes, of course. But when I stumbled on the leather lizard baby moccasins from Little House in the Orchard, I couldn’t help but smile. They’re beautifully handmade from ankle to uh, claws? I love the bright green, and details like the contrasting inner fabric and comfy elastic bands to keep them on. The leather soles makes them great for both indoor play and scampering around outside as the weather warms up. Foxes and pandas and trees, oh my!

I don’t know what it is about girls and purses. Maybe it’s that even the youngest of us naturally feel the need to have a bag for every occasion. But it’s never too early to start a healthy obsession with fun accessories, right? Which is why we love the sweet little coin purses from NYC-based Oktak that were just added to the Cool Mom Picks indie shop.   Featuring cute pandas and foxes in fun colors, these tiny handmade coin purses would make a special gift for any girl — or young-at-heart woman — who needs a way to tote coins, jewelry, hair clips, or other precious knickknacks that we wouldn’t...

Move over cutesie nursery art, plush taxidermy is taking over.

When papier-mâché animal heads began popping up on blogs a few years ago, I wasn’t completely sold on the trend of faux taxidermy as children’s decor. Sure, they were a million times less creepy than the real deal, but they didn’t seem playful enough for a kid’s bedroom. On the other hand, the plush taxidermy from Kelsey Davis Design are the perfect mix of wit and whimsy. If had a nursery to decorate, I’d place my order today.  All of the creatures she makes would be adorable over a crib or a dresser, but the crown-wearing lion and vintage-patterned pig are my two favorites. Related: Zoo portrait clocks that will have you laughing.   The wall mounts...

Courtney Courtney: Now one more way to get your hands on our favorite girls’ dresses. If you’re quick.

At a time we’re seeing some of our favorite small artists abandon Etsy for their own storefronts, we’re thrilled to see one of our all-time favorite makers, Courtney Courtney, back there again, giving us one more place to shop in addition to the Courtney Courtney shop on Big Cartel. Kristen and I may each own more of her amazing handmade dresses for our kids than anyone else in the world, and every day our kids put them on it gives us joy. While other artists have tried the whole upcycled t-shirts turned into dresses thing, no one we’ve ever seen does it quite...
