Shake it up baby.

In my early days of parenting, finding beautiful handmade baby gifts was something you really had to work on. But now, they’re popping up everywhere. And as we try to pare it down to just our favorites we’re happy to discover Cheengoo who just might make the cutest crocheted baby rattles in the world. Besides cute, the handmade rattles are totally eco-friendly, crocheted from 100% pesticide-free bamboo yarn that makes them super-soft, naturally antibacterial and hypoallergenic. That may sound like marketing speak until you think about how much your newborn is going to have these against his sensitive skin–or in that sensitive mouth. (Fact.) Plus they’re made by...

The most impressive handmade Halloween masks on Etsy. Who gets the best candy now?

I tend to think that making my kids’ Halloween costumes is a great idea. I also tend to be wrong. Not only does it always take way much time than I have, but it can end up being every bit as expensive as buying something. My 9-year-old is feeling like maybe a full costume isn’t cool anymore, so this year I’m helping him plan a simple Halloween costume around a really exquisite mask like these gorgeous handmade Halloween masks I’ve been admiring on Etsy for the last few weeks. As for my daughter, she still wants an elaborate costume, but maybe she can...

Cooking with color

For someone who prides herself in putting out multiple home-cooked meals a week, my cooking utensils are really old and in dire need of replacing. After spending some time poking around the Canadian Etsy shop Storiebrooke, everything about these bamboo cooking utensils has me saying it’s time to fix that. [Update: You can now find Storiebrooke at Gouniq instead of Etsy] The 4 piece bamboo cooking collection–with slotted and solid cooking spoons and slotted and solid spatulas–would instantly brighten my stale decor. I just love the vibrant and modern color-dipped wood options here. If the sea urchin palette isn’t your thing, maybe hot air balloon...

Chaboukie: Handmade baby leggings to dye for

Maybe it’s the cooler weather, but we just keep discovering funky leggings your babies and kids should be wearing. Like, stat. And now there’s another. I’ve loved the mom-and-pop owned LA shop Chaboukie for their super cool, edgy designs, and their latest collection of Shibori handmade tie-dye baby leggings is no exception. Named after the centuries-old Japanese method for fabric embellishment (so no, it was not invented by Deadheads) the new line features really special tie-dye baby leggings and matching tank tops for kids up to size 4T.       Shibori‘s philosophy is to attempt to guide the dye as much as possible before ultimately letting it run its own course–much like...

Faery of Tales: Keepsake fairy tale jewelry from storybooks, not animated movies.

I think the ultimate 2014 holiday gift for a whole lot of girls may have just hit the scene. And not too surprisingly, it’s themed around fairy tales. With Frozen mania showing no sign of subsiding, I am seeing renewed interest in the original fairy tales everywhere; on the runways, in theaters with movies like Maleficent and Into the Woods, even as a theme at a recent holiday tech press event. (Yeah, a little strange to see Red Riding Hood handing out flash drives.) So even this sometimes princess-averse mama is capitvated by the limited edition Faery of Tales fine jewelry line which features...

DIYers: Get inspired with these very cool handmade rubber stamps

Ever since a Cool Mom Picks editor forwarded me a link to the Creatiate Etsy shop devoted solely to cool handmade rubber stamps, I’ve been imagining the inky possibilities. These stamps are gorgeous–like I wish I could spend a week stamping an entire wall in my house to make the world’s prettiest wallpaper gorgeous. And while that might be going a bit overboard, embellishing stationery, kids’ party invitations and loot bags, and making just about any flat surface lovelier isn’t, right? There are so many designs–see what sparks your own imagination.     The shop owner can also customize a stamp for...

Handmade baby blankets with a truly wonderful design

I don’t know about you, but I’m a sucker for nice baby blankets — which is why you see a lot of them around here.  Especially handmade ones. I mean, what’s more sweet than wrapping your little newborn up in a soft bundle that’s one-of-a-kind, too? For lightweight baby blankets, I always find myself turning to tried and true favorites like aden + anais so I’m psyched to share a new source for lightweight, handmade baby blankets with a completely different look and feel from anything I’ve personally found. Designed more like a flat sheet than a thick blanket and made with three layers of organic cotton, these, handmade...

Cool hostess gifts: Handmade tea towels you’ll want to keep for yourself

You know what’s awesome? When a favorite artisan or etsy shop of mine decides to brand out a little beyond their regular spate of offerings. That’s exactly what happened with Foxy and Winston, whom I loved for their cool letterpress and now for their kitchen textiles, which is fancy for cotton tea towels, napkins, and tablecloths. (Sorry, we’ve been on a Fancy Nancy kick around my place lately). Whether your own kitchen needs a little refreshing or you’ve got another lucky someone in mind, these handmade tea towels are some of the prettiest I’ve seen, with bright colors and fun patterns (and organic cotton,...

Faux leather handbags as luscious as the real thing

Years ago, we discovered the wonderful faux leather handbag designs of Crystalyn Kae, and became fast fans. Our love of her work was only solidified after the breaking news that lots of faux leather handbags contain high levels of lead, but hers were not among them. Still, it’s been a while since I’ve checked in with her shop and wow, there are some great new handbags out for fall, including a Women’s Hobo Bag which comes in seven cool colors.   One of the benefits of vegan leather is that it’s way lighter than real leather, water-resistant, and can be more durable...

Gorgeous handmade toys you’ll be tempted to play with yourself

Okay, so I’m going to go ahead and say it: The holidays are creeping up. I know that means half of you hate me, and the other half are like “whatever, my list is already done.” In which case, I bow to you. But if you’re starting to think about  special gifts for kids for any reason at all (I won’t use the “H” word if it makes it easier for you), we’ve got a slew of ideas in the Cool Mom Picks Indie Shop. And one of our favorite new finds has been the exquisite handmade toys from Abby...

I like big bins and I cannot lie.

We’ve featured no shortage of kid-friendly storage bins here on Cool Mom Picks, but now that my kids are getting older (sniffle), I’m in the market for a little organizational help that’s a little more my taste, like these stylish storage bins from MUNI shop on Etsy. I can always use a few more bins in my life, especially now that school has started, and these handmade linen baskets are perfect. I particularly love the leather handles, which make them sturdier than some others I’ve seen. And the designs are sweet and modern.   Charging cables, office supplies, well,...

Playful: A book of easy crafts for kids that will inspire imagination and play.

This summer I mapped out fun crafts to do with my kids every week, and we completed exactly zero of them. It might be because I pinned things like build a lap-sized loom and learn to weave. I’m still not giving up on making beautiful, modern and, ahem, easy crafts with kids, though, and right now I’m drawing inspiration from Playful, the new DIY book from Merrilee Liddiard.   If you haven’t seen Merrilee’s blog, MerMag, you should bookmark it right now. Her modern French aesthetic is so beautiful, and it comes through in even the simplest crafts she suggests for kids, which is what I love...

We found it: the adorable I Wake Up Awesome tee, and other cool, fun kids t-shirts for fall

Last week I wrote about the Babiators glasses and their awesome warranty, and you guys went nuts over the adorable I Wake Up Awesome t-shirt the child was wearing in the photo. Well, we like to find you what you like, so we did a little research and found it, plus a few more fun kids t-shirts at Three Little Numbers.   These slogans are screen printed by hand by the Ohio-based Numbers family onto really soft tri-blend t-shirts (sorry, not organic at this point) that will keep their shape, even for kids who tend to stretch their clothes out. Right...

Funny coffee mugs for caffeine junkies. You know who you are.

Considering how much our Facebook fans loved this hilarious coffee drinkers t-shirt, we couldn’t help but share this hilarious coffee mug we found at AvenueBlue on Etsy. I’m sorry for what I said before I had my coffee.  Now if that’s not the truth, then we’re not sure what is. Of course, if you’re not a coffee drinker (or bulletproof buttered coffee drinker, what?), then you’ll love these other mugs, all of which are available in 3 custom sizes, depending on how much tea, coffee, or um adult substances, you drink. Think teacher gifts, friend gifts, or just because you need a...

One of our favorite gifts for girls, now on sale. We want one of each.

We came across the sweet Sarah Jane necklaces at Bel Kai Designs a few years ago and fell in love with this perfect “just because” gift for girls. The illustrations by one of our favorite artists, Sarah Jane, are sentimental, but the pieces are bright, cheery and beautifully handmade. This means my seven-year-old daughter–and even my 11-year-old niece–will actually wear them on her own. That’s a big bonus at the age when the line between cool and “my mom picked this out” is so very blurry.   Each pendant is 1-inch in diameter with an antique sterling silver-plated frame. The chain is 14...

A bird in the hair…

One of our back to school shopping traditions (besides the annual fight about how no, you don’t need a new _____  because last year’s is just fine thank you very much) is an affordable one: My girls each pick a cute new hair accessory. Of course this is as much for me as for them, because on days that my youngest daughter simply refuses to brush her hair, a ponytail saves the day. In honor of my seven-year-old who is going through a total bird thing right now (well, that and tigers) here are a few bird themed hair accessories she likes...
