This holiday season, feel like a crafting genius

I love crafty people. I wish I were one of them, but, alas, I’m not even that great at wrapping gifts. They end up looking like my three-year-old took the reins. But, this year, my friends and family will think I’ve developed some serious crafting skills when they receive my holiday gifts with hand-stitched gift tags. This is how easy it is: thread a needle (I can do that!),  follow the holes (like follow-the-dot) and viola! You’ll look like a crafting genius and your gifts will look extra special. The Stitchable Gift Tags set includes two heart and one...

All the bestest animated Christmas movies all together

To me the holidays is nothing without our annual viewing of Rudolph. Herbie! The Abominable Snowman! The Isle of Misfit Toys who aren’t quite misfits! It’s all pure magic. So who’s with me in jumping for joy that this year, A four-DVD series of some of the best animated Christmas classics are are bundled together and out on Blu-ray. The Original Christmas Classics features four of the greatest animated classics — or at least three of the greatest. I’m not as big a fan of 1992’s Frosty Returns, but I sure do love the original Frosty the Snowman, Santa...

Add this Dan Zanes’ song to your Hanukkah playlist

Although everyone from Rod Stewart to The Black Eyed Peas seems to put out Christmas albums, it’s pretty rare for anyone besides Adam Sandler to do something new and interesting with Hanukkah music.  New and interesting is something Dan Zanes knows well and his brand-new, just-in-time version of the traditional Hanukkah song Ner Li is a perfect addition to our holiday.  I have to admit I wasn’t familiar with this song, but it’s really lovely. You’ll recognize his famous Spanish-guitar vibe (which makes sense, since one of his collaborators is Sonia De Los Santos). Dan sings the first verse in Hebrew...

The coolest things to do with kids in New York over the holidays

As a native New Yorker, I admit I’m totally biased when I say that this is one of the most magical places for a family to be over the holidays. Because I get so many emails each year from readers and out-of-town friends asking me about must-do family fun, I figured this would be a great place to answer all of you. From the traditional stuff that’s famous for a reason, to some off-the-beaten path activities, here are my picks for my own family’s favorites of the awesome seasonal events that New York City has to offer. THE STUFF...

Prima Princessa presents the Nutcracker on PBS

One of my all time favorite holiday shows is the Nutcracker Ballet, but I didn’t imagined I would get tickets to see it with my toddler for quite a long time–like, ten years, at least. Performances are expensive in New York! Which is one of the reasons that Cool Mom Picks has been fans of the mom-created Prima Princessa series of dance videos, and especially Prima Princessa Presents The Nutcracker. Well good news: Now it’s free. Prima Princessa Ballerina will be airing on PBS this December so set your DVRs and get ready to be charmed. It tells the...

Holiday photo cards with flair? Reader Q&A

Can you suggest some more holiday photo card sites? I’m a little bored with the same ole, same ole every year. Or, what about a site for creating your own cards with flair? -Ginger I am fairly certain that Holiday Rule #1 states that you must send out photo cards once you have children. A lot of people must agree since I get a loads of holiday photo cards each year. But after getting, and sending, the same basic photo card year after year, I too yearn to see something a little more design-y and inspired, like these options we’ve...

Custom Christmas stockings that have no match

When my kids were young, I found a trio of very cute stockings in a small local store that I thought were totally unique and special for our family. Want something hanging from you chimney with care that you can be sure is unique to your own family? Then check out these custom stockings which go way beyond monograms, and be assured that the only way you’ll see two alike is if you have identical twins. What makes the aptly...

Wrap it up to go

I love the hustle of the holiday season: cooking, shopping and giving are three of my favorite things. What I really don’t like is finding the right wrapping paper for my latest treasures – and it can get ugly when I have multiple smaller gifts, for teachers and neighbors. We’re talking last-minute wrapping in the form of torn tissue paper held together with stickers, which doesn’t look so hot, especially if those gifts are–shall we say–somewhat modest. Sometimes a gal really needs something to help with the upsell.  Check out the personalized items from momma Bridgett Edwards at Perideau...

Martha Stewart wants your input on what’s cool. Seriously.

It’s like Miss America for crafters, and you’re a judge. But there’s no Miss Congeniality. This one’s all about looks, and you only get one vote. Actually, it’s the competition for Martha Stewart’s annual Holiday Craft Fair at her company headquarter in NYC. Vendor spots are highly competitive and you can vote for your faves. Of course, we’re always excited to see handmade, gorgeous crafts in the limelight, but we’re especially proud to know that two of CMP’s favorite mom-run businesses are among the finalists. There’s perpetual craft crush Little Alouette, who makes gorgeous wood toys and teethers in...

Martha Stewart makes cookies in your kitchen

Every year, I make two kinds of holiday cookies from recipes that have been passed down from my mom. But yummy as the traditional family recipes are, I’m ready to branch out from the same old pecan balls and sugar cookies, and try and start my own new tradition. Now, thanks to a little help from Martha Stewart and my iPad, I’ve got a plethora of awesome cookie recipes to choose from and a whole lot of inspiration. The gift(wrap) that keeps on giving

I’m not sure which is cooler, the actual lyziwraps reusable gift bags that I just discovered, or the story behind them. They were originally designed by an 8th Grader, for an innovation competition, who was trying to find a way to decrease the amount of waste Americans produce between Thanksgiving and New Year’s. The result? Fantastic. [don’t miss a special offer after the jump] These brightly colored nylon reusable gift bags open at both ends so you can place your gift inside, cinch the ribbons at both ends and create beautiful wrapping that can be used again and again. Fighting fire with Halloween cards

When an enormous fire roared across San Bruno, California, on September 9, it destroyed homes and uprooted hundreds of people. Scary–unbelievably scary.
