Home is where you hang your hat on a bunny

Need to get those coats off the floor? The bunny can help! In fact, there’s an entire menagerie ready to help keep things tidy. The source for these adorable coat hooks is Pomme, the superhip kids’ outpost in Dumbo, Brooklyn. Whether you go with the rabbit, cat, frog, or cow, each coathanger is about eight inches tall and four inches wide and made of enamel-coated metal with four round hooks. And each one looks just as trustworthy and earnest as the last. We adore these fine fellows, but keep in mind that while each coat hook is only $12,...

It all adds up to one very adorable personalized pillow

We’re entering the gift-giving season around my house, with a series of family members’ birthdays evenly spread out of the next few months. And as many personalized gift ideas I’ve got in my arsenal, I’ve found one that I think will be perfect for a couple of lucky people on my list.   I’ve found all sorts of lovely gift ideas at Wicked Stitches, and the Family Math pillow is no exception. It’s such a sweet, simple gift for mothers or grandmothers in particular, with up to six names embroidered in black and red, or the colors of your choice, and something...

Bathtub toy storage that’s the cutest ever. (Ever!)

There’s a walrus in my bathtub. Luckily, he’s a very tidy walrus and will be glad to store all of our bath toys for us. Plus, he has friends that are just as cute and helpful for wet toy storage. We love pretty much everything from 3 Sprouts, and now they’ve moved from bedroom and changing table storage solutions into the bathroom with these adorable new bath storage caddies. Whether you’re into blue walruses, orange foxes, or purple owls, each mildew-resistant organizer has a stretchy mouth for NOMing your toys and a suction cup to hang securely from tile...

Art with a beautiful message, for a beautiful cause

I’m not usually someone who posts inspirational messages or quotes on Facebook, Twitter, or Pinterest for that matter, let alone on the walls of my home;  but when I saw this lovely print, I decided to make an exception. Especially because of where the money goes. This sweet Be Fearless print is an original collaboration between Fresh Words Market and the LIFT campaign, and 100% of the proceeds from its purchase will go to this organization which helps eradicate poverty and create more opportunities for people in need, right here in the United States. So cool!  I love the simple...

Sleeping on a cloud: heavenly handmade pillows

My girls have a weird obsession with pillows. While they won’t seem to sleep with the proper fluffy kinds, anything that’s an animal, a shape or a giant stuffed doll will do. So add these pretty ones to the list. The handmade cloud pillows hail (ha) from Etsy’s Oh No Rachio, which we’ve already admired for their great stationery and handlettered cards and notebooks. The pillows, however, will make you happy to look at them on a couch or against the back of a rocker. They would make my girls happy to sleep on. And hopefully, I can convince them that...

New year, cool new storage bins! (Man, we love bins.)

As I continue to knock through my New Year’s resolutions, I decided it was high time to replace the scraggly looking bins sitting on my kitchen counter. You know, the ones full of mail, and chargers, and poker chips from 2004 (Oh, just me?). In addition to the stylish home storage solutions we recently rounded up, I found one more great option, in these lovely, affordable finds from Etsy. Made by Fitzcraft,  I can think of a billion uses for their felt storage bin (above), like replacing that awful letter bin sitting on my counter. It’s such a prettier option,...

Stylish storage solutions for an organized home

Let’s talk storage solutions, shall we? Or rather, my lack thereof. Bills and random paperwork end up mishmashed into the Play-Doh tub (which, of course, contains no actual Play-Doh). There’s not one item of winter clothing in the winter clothing box, but for some reason there are six spoons in the bathroom drawer. My only real consolation? A lot of you are living exactly the same way. Luckily, these storage options offer those of us dreaming of a more organized home the chance to sort out our stuff in the most stylish, prettiest way possible–meaning that this just might...

Colorful coasters with serious design savvy

Bold. Graphic. Modern. Who’d have guessed the humble coaster could be so fun–and protect furniture so gorgeously? Bonus: They’re sturdy enough for your kids, too. The gorgeous coasters from ArtisEverything on Etsy are sturdy enough to survive three generations of sweating sweet tea glasses. Shop owner Iris designs each set, then impregnates the wood with a special printing process that isn’t glued and can’t be peeled off. The bright, shiny finish will last and protect your furniture for years to come. And even if your kids use them as adorable little frisbees, they’ll take a licking and keep on…um…coasting....

Decorating with winter whites

When the tree is down, the tinsel away, and everything glitzy and shiny and blinky put safely back in the closet, I always have this need to surround myself with the serenity of white in my home.  I collect white mid-century ceramic vases in various shapes–along with a few modern ones– and l would love to add any one of these from Frances Palmer Pottery to the collection. You kind of can’t go wrong with a white vase–just look at how artfully they display everything from Sweet Pea to Ranunculus to those gorgeous striped Parrot Tulips. And really, they...

Not in the mood for a nutmeg-scented house? Jonathan Adler’s got your back.

I kind of love everything from Jonathan Adler. Especially the scents of his new candles, which are sure to make your home smell greenmarket-fresh, even if you’re just cracking open canned…whatever. Don’t expect the traditional nutmeg, peppermint or mulled apple cider scents in the Jonathan Adler Pop candles. Instead, you’ll find clean scents like tomato, watercress, earl grey, fig, and my own favorite, grapefruit. Earl grey and fig might be a little more fitting as holiday scents for this time of year, although tomato and fig together give you that red/green holiday pop for a great hostess gift–without the...

Birchbox Home arrives, whoa! A new reason to stay in on Friday nights

We’ve already have described how much we love Birchbox from the day they launched since, well, who doesn’t love a hot pink box filled with amazing high-end cosmetics samples delivered to their door each month? So it will be no surprise to hear that we’re ridiculously excited about two brand new Birchbox developments. Just in time for the holiday season, Birchbox has announced the launch of Birchbox Home, their brand new pop-up shop. And I won’t lie to you, I’m already drooling. With everything from pretty Ikat nesting bowls and gourmet vanilla bean sugar to the super-cool Jonathan Adler...

Pretty bowls make great hostess gifts. Especially when they’re on sale.

With Halloween an entire day behind us, our thoughts at Cool Mom Picks already turn to the best holiday gifts. (We can’t help it!) So when I saw these beautiful little Japanese bowls on sale, I thought, ooh…hostess gift. The modernist Japanese bowls at West Elm are now just six bucks each. I love the contrasting patterns on the inside and outside, although the grey floral with the turquoise rim is especially elegant and simple. I could imagine wrapping up four of them with a nice package of steel-cut oatmeal and some maple syrup. I’m only bummed that the mugs...

Zara Home hits the US: parents and children rejoice!

We have been long time fans of Zara so it wasn’t hard to get super excited about the launch of their new new e-commerce home line for the US.  We’ve been drooling from afar by looking at their UK site, but thankfully now we can enjoy it for ourselves. And we’re excited to see there are options for both adults and kids.   [Click over for a first look at the beautiful options and design inspiration.]     Zara Home carries a plethora of the home decor products you’d imagine, like bedding, tableware, and living room accessories. Forget grungy: upcycled gets downright gorgeous

Creating art, decor and furniture with upcycled materials is not just a fleeting design fad. It’s a way of living for many artists who want to create items that are sustainable and friendly to our earth. Fortunately, a lot of upcycled pieces are on the forefront of design as well. Meet Swedish Guy Design. “Swedish Guy” grew up on a farm in Minnesota with his Swedish/ Norwegian family, then became certified as a Green Builder in San Francisco. What’s really interesting is that the source of material for all of his gorgeous pieces–from a modern lamp to a magazine rack...

The Home by Novogratz book helps you make your home more yours

A few months back, I had the pleasure of meeting TV’s increasingly notorious design mavens, the Novogratz family, and drooling over their unbelievable Manhattan apartment firsthand. While I keep inviting them to break into my home and have their way with it when I’m away, they have yet to take me up on it. (Odd, right?) So for me–and the rest of us–it’s great to get a peek at their new design book. [Don’t miss the drool-worthy photos after the jump!] Home by Novogratz takes Courtney and Robert’s “there are no rules” style of eclectic decorating made famous on...

Pop art placemats that pack a punch

Ah, the poor humble placemat. Sure, placemats serve a noble purpose: to keep spills and mess (somewhat) contained. But have you ever fallen in love with one? I have. I’m totally smitten with Pop Placemats. These puppies demand attention with their hip styling and personalized pizzazz. They scream: “I am functional and fabulous, KAPOW!” Their old-school cartoon flavor, reminiscent of my favorite Batman episodes of yore, make me so darn happy…and that’s before coffee. Bold graphics keep young Warhols-in-training inspired, and 100% easy-wipe polyester (with no-skid bottoms) keep mama and papa smiling at all the, uh, mealtime art all over the table.  -Eva...

A stylish solution for storage needs

Finding storage solutions is one of our obsessions. I love buckets and bins, but I need them to be on budget and, just as important for me, not boring to look at. Chewing The Cud has solved both of those problems by creating these adorable fabric storage buckets that are modern, whimsical and easy on the wallet. You can choose from a variety of colors and patterns as well as different sizes. These buckets are perfect for for display, gift presentation and storage. I can already think of so many ways to use them around my house!                                   Use them...

It’s map time

My 5-year-old showed almost zero percent interest in maps until we went on vacation to a beach town. Suddenly, it was very important that she be the holder of the map at all times. It was ultimately a good thing, even if said map ended up covered in melted chocolate ice cream and ripped in random places. Her newfound awareness about the world around her made me appreciate the genius behind Soft Cities even more. Soft Cities are exactly what they sound like: maps of your favorite places printed onto soft blankets and napkins (“mapkins”!). You simply write in the...

Plush and pillows with the perfect sense of humor

As a professional decorator, one of my favorite spaces to take on is a kid’s room. You can go as creative and whimsical as you want; where else could I use every color in the rainbow and indulge in prints that are easily deemed “funny?” Now there’s an Etsy shop I’m so happy to have discovered for those very reasons. When I first saw these pillows from Coucou Salut, I immediately thought of several places that I would use them in my own home.  Everything  at the shop is 100% illustrated, designed, printed and sewn by one talented pair...
