Ready made craft kits from Darby Smart let you make those Pinterest projects–that actually might come out like the photos.

I love handmade items, but it is usually a good idea if someone else’s hands make them for me, since crafting is not where my talents lay. But, now that I’ve seen a new service that makes it so easy to create cool things at home, I may have to give DIY another chance. Darby Smart provides a new way to create those cool DIY projects I’ve seen on Pinterest or one of my favorite design blogs. But instead of driving myself crazy trying to find all the supplies I’ll need, the Darby Smart Kit contains all of it,...

Gorgeous, fashion-forward accessories straight from…Tibet

I’ve loved Shokay since I first discovered their gorgeous baby clothes and gifts, all made from a yak hair cashmere that’s unbelievably soft and gorgeous, and all made sustainably to support Tibetan artisans. Now they’ve redone the site and made the leap into a lot of great fashion-forward accessories. I love the Turkana necklace, which is all knit out of bamboo, cotton and yak hair. (And yes, I wish there were a sexier term for “yak hair,” the way we don’t call cashmere “goat hair.”) There are also some spectacular shawls and scarves, like the spring/summer-weight black and white...

FEED plus Target: a collaboration we can get behind.

I’m a big fan of the FEED mission, which sells products to directly feed schoolchildren both at home through Feeding America and abroad via the UN’s World Food Program. Whenever I carry my FEED bag, I’m reminded of the good it did. So I’m excited about their collaboration with Target–but it’s ending soon. So if you haven’t checked it out, now is a great time.        The FEED + Target collaboration includes so many kinds of products; check the Target website and there’s surely something in there that you want, especially considering it supports Feeding America. And...

Mixing up colors with Martha Stewart mixing bowls

Last year, we got a set of Martha Stewart ice cream bowls that have become favorites with my kids, whether they’re holding ice cream, peanut butter for dipping carrot sticks, or maple syrup in the morning. So I’m excited to see now she’s added to the collection with a beautiful set of mixing bowls. The Martha Stewart mixing bowls are so gorgeous, aren’t they? They would get so much use at our place, from mixing up pancake batter to serving kettle corn on movie nights. I especially love that they’re light enough that kids can lift them themselves (not...

Future’s so bright, I need posh origami shades

There comes a time in every parent’s life when the cat knocks over the cheapo 10-year-old lamp in the nursery and it’s time to make a tough decision. You want something sophisticated, but still soft. You could pick something like the last lamp, or you could see a shade this gorgeous and splurge on a very bright future. This stunner collection of Moth origami lampshades from Studio Snowpuppe is handmade in the Netherlands. They’re attracting us like, well, moths to light. Available in a range of solids, color blocks, and delicate gradations, each piece is hand-folded from special Butterfly...

Of course today isn’t just about barbecues, sparklers, and if you’re lucky, a big fireworks display that kicks off a four-day weekend. In their honor–and in honor of independence–we present 13 outstanding indie, new-to-us Etsy shops that we’re happy to support, one from each of the original 13. –Liz [After the jump, check out 13 can’t-miss Etsy artists from up and down the East Coast] New Jersey: BubbledogThis shop is like kawaii central, with...
