Having just returned from a week at SeaWorld–during which we were splashed by sea critters no fewer than five times–I can attest to the fact that, to kids, whales rule. This whale may not be doing twists and turns in the air, but it might do something that’s just a little bit cooler: it makes bathtime enticing. There are few parents that will say that’s not a good thing. While so many non-slip bath mats look like something Great Grandma Ruth might use, this Whale Rubber Bath Mat from Urban Outfitters takes it six steps cuter. The rubber mat has traction...Read More

I make it no secret that I have a huge crush on the Canadian Ryans: Ryan Reynolds and Ryan Gosling. But since I’m not 15 anymore, I’m pretty sure the glossy posters on my ceiling or calendars on my wall are out of the question. But a tea towel? Oh that’s more than fair game. You better hurry and snatch up the Hey Girl I’d Rather Be Doing Dishes tea towel before I buy it. Artist Colleen Pugh has translated the hugely popular Ryan Gosling “Hey Girl” Internet meme into a must-have kitchen accessory for R-Go fan. (I just made that...Read More
Last year, owls were the hot animal motif of the season. While they’re not going anywhere, I do think that the cool cute animal du jour is now the fox. Which is replacing the dragonfly, butterfly, and octopus trends I’ve noticed over the years. If it were up to Delilah, narwhals would be huge, but until then, here are some of the coolest of the fox art and decor we’ve seen around lately. This fox print from Gingiber for children is beautifully done. It might even be my favorite of the set of animal prints she’s created, and is...Read More
As it turns out, a stash of pretty paper napkins are always good to have around for unexpected company or impromptu picnics. This is a lesson I learned last week when we had to pull out the polka dot “happy birthday!” napkins over cocktails. Oy. Here are a few luncheon-sized napkins I would love to have stashed away because they can double as cocktail napkins in a pinch. They’re not too cutesie, nor do they look like they’re leftover from Grandma’s house. Or (eep) from Halloween. Best, almost all of them are on sale right now. –Liz This set...Read More

When I was a young girl, my favorite pastime was playing with paper dolls. I loved dressing them up and creating stories with each of them. I think it’s great that they have made such a comeback into toys and decor because my own daughter loves them as much as I did. These vintage paper doll pillows hail from one of Cool Mom Picks’ favorite little shops, Baby Gardner, and are the perfect accent for accessorizing a little girls bedroom or play space. Betty and Sally originate from an authentic 1940s paper doll set and are now dressed up in...Read More
At least once a day (sometimes more), my husband is searching for his keys and wallet. And don’t even get me started about the piles of change all over my house. This locally salvaged Maple Key tray might just be the answer to all our woes, with a special cut-out that’s big enough for what my husband needs to keep track of — nothing more, nothing less. Dan Zanes is happiness squared. His music puts me in a great mood each and every time I give it a spin–even without the kids, when I’m alone in the minivan. So I’m excited to see his new project that didn’t come out of a sound studio, but a ceramics studio. [after the jump, learn more about a special Dan Zanes event for families this week!] The new new Dan Zanes pairing with one of my fave shops, Fishs Eddy, the quintessential funky New York restaurant-quality tableware shop, makes so much sense. One look at the quirky tubas, cellos,...Read More
Jeff Koons may have popularized the balloon dog as pop art icon, but as a figure in so many of our own childhoods, its no wonder we’re starting to see all kinds of artists and brands finding inspiration in them. Here are a few super cute balloon dogs that are finding their way into home decor and modern design. Balloon dog wall decals? Magical! These, from CMP fave Wall Candy Arts, look like they’re floating around the room. The set comes with all five colors that you can reuse and reposition. In our household, dealing with kids’ flus and colds is a sticky process. I mean this literally: we are usually well-doused in prescribed medicine before any of it actually ends up inside the child. It’s not necessarily that the kids don’t want the medicine itself–the stuff tastes like Kool Aid these days–it’s more that the actual procedure is kind of scary for them. To Tiffany Krumins, the solution was perfectly clear: make medicine-giving fun. She even went on ABC’s “Shark Tank” to debut her idea: AVA the Elephant, a cute, talking medicine dispenser. You just remove the dropper from AVA’s trunk...Read More

As my kids get older we are (gasp) transitioning away from the non-breakable plastic wear and gingerly setting down proper plates and drinkware at their table settings. They still have their personalized placemats so it’s not like I’m turning them into little adults, and in fact we’re not quite out of the HOW COME SHE GOT THE BLUE PRINCESS CUP? I WANT THE BLUE PRINCESS CUP! stage. So what a genius solution these tumblers are. The espresso mugs from Pigeon Toe Ceramics all look beautifully uniform on the outside–but turn over the bottom and a colorful painted bottom reveals...Read More

Artfully arranged flowers are one of life’s most fleeting luxuries. Since I’m not an heiress, I pick up flowers at Trader Joe’s or the grocery store when I do my weekly shopping — the flowers are inexpensive, and a flower’s a flower right? The only problem is that when I get home with a bunch of flowers I have no idea what to do with them. So I plop them in a vase (as artfully as possible of course) and wonder why they never look as nice as professionally arranged flowers. Now they do. When I learned about the Flower...Read More
My apartment has been taken over by art supplies! I want to hold on to many of the supplies and keep them in an organized manner…if this this possible with a 3 year and 5 year old. –Holly Hi Holly, With three of my own little artists, I can empathize! It’s easy for a small space to be quickly overrun byall those supplies–not to mention the results of your kids’ artistic labor. Here are some of my favorite ideas for storing art supplies and projects. Ikea’s Expedit bookcase (at top) is my hands-down favorite for art-supply storage, holding...Read More
I know I am not the only one who has looked at those photos of professionally reorganized closets and wept with envy. I am pathetic in the organization department, and my closets are the worst example of it all. In fact, they’re less closets and more like black holes. It’s always been a dream for some professional closet organizer to swoop in and organize the mayhem. Dream! (above) Reality! (Includes bent clothing rod and recently discovered squash racket that doubles as handy child-sized air guitar) So when the kind folks at Closet Factory offered to help me customize my...Read More
