This summer an eco deck chair is the place to be

With patio season finally here, my thoughts turn to warm summer days lounging in the backyard, sipping margaritas while the kids play cooperatively in the sandbox. Sure, the last part is but an impossible dream, but there’s nothing to stop me from making the lounging and the margaritas happen. And I think I know the perfect deck chair in which to lounge quite stylishly. The beautiful chairs and stools from Gallant & Jones are nothing if not drool-worthy. They are handmade in western Canada from North American White Oak, which, I have now learned, is both water- and rot-resistant....

Clocks with hands. Remember those?

As much as I rely on the digital clocks on my appliances and on my smart phone to keep me on schedule, there’s just something about pretty analog clock to make a room seem more homey. I’ve been a long time fan of decoylab, whose beautiful, handcrafted clocks are as much works of art as they are timepieces, this amazing vintage style camera clock. Made from bamboo, this silent clock (that means no ticking!) features a clever leather strap to use as a hanger. What a perfect addition to your home office or a cool accent on a wall...

Will they stop teaching cursive? Not in our house.

With all the talk about getting rid of cursive handwriting in schools, this writer is a little panicky. Fortunately my kids are showing the inclination anyway. Which is in part why I’m loving these awesome personalized placemats to help them do that very thing. We fell in love with the awesome kids’ personalized placemats from Sarah + Abraham a while back–my kids still love sitting down at the chair where they see a likeness of their faces staring back at them. Plus? The placemats show no real sign of wear and tear, even after everyday use for more than...

Organic sachets bring the scent of spring…well, anywhere.

I have a total thing for sachets. It’s easy to find scary-looking ones (hello, airport giftshops!), but when I find pretty ones that smell wonderful, I tend to stock up. Gardenmis on Etsy is like awesome sachet central. I really love the French country sachets which are the perfect neutral, modern look to fit in any decor–not just French country. But if you look around the shop, you’ll find a lot of options from organic rose petal sachets with Emily Dickinson quotes meant to be hung over a doorknob; gorgeous purple sachets of course, filled with a lavender blend;...

Bookends that will make you want to file. And that’s saying something.

The second I saw this desk accessory–instant swoon. The Indice Bookends are available online from the MoMA store, which is pretty much where I’d expect to find something so functional and funky. The bright colors are calling my name, but it’s that file folder tab design that really makes it special. You can slide them around or separate them like regular old bookends, or split them up into sets of 3 and 2 if that works for you. But I think the five all lined up together just gets you the whole effect. Or hey, maybe ten together? At...

New kitchenware, definitely not for minimalists

I tend to gravitate towards white kitchenware and serving pieces, but once in a while you just need something with more impact to liven up all that neutral. The new kitchenware from Isak, a longtime favorite design company of ours (love Sandra Isakson’s kids counting poster!), delivers in spades with their trademark combo of color, whimsy, retro-styling, and just enough Scandinavian quirkiness to make guests excited to get a better look at just what’s hiding under the Gouda on the serving tray. I love all the designs, but the family breadboard and porcelain cups might be my favorite–I could...

Trip the nightlight fantastic

I have a small house. Which seems like an irrelevant thing to mention when I’m about to tell you about a beautiful nightlight. But a small house equals much shared space. And when you share space and want to light it for your kids in the middle of the night, maybe a garish superhero nightlight isn’t the way to go.   Which is why I’m mightily in love with The Night Light by Six Point Un, a super-cool Canadian design team. Its simple lines and natural wood finish would blend in with any modern design. Plus the LED light...

The kids’ table is the place to be with Marimekko’s fun, fancy dishes

I love using colorful matching dish sets for my kids’ snacks and meals. Not to mention, I swear it makes my kids eat better. And now, there’s a new line of children’s dinnerware from Marimekko–yes, the design house responsible for the iconic bold prints that may be on your couch cushions or even baby clothes–that I’m totally in love with. Made from durable porcelain–so not for babies–the four different kids’ dish sets include a plate, a bowl, and a mug. On the plus side, porcelain means microwaves, dishwashers, ovens and freezers are all fair game.   Now I will...
