Downton Abbey’s Dowager Countess puts the cross in cross-stitch

I want to live at Downton Abbey. I want a Mrs. Patmore to cook dinner and a fleet of Annas to clean up and a closet of gorgeous, beaded dresses.  Unless my husband ends up being a long-lost heir, I doubt all that’s in the cards. But at least I can have this adorable cross stitch of one of my favorite characters. We’re in love with Downton Abbey, and I’m a huge fan of the Dowager Countess of Grantham, played with panache by Dame Maggie Smith. Every week, she manages to steal the show with a perfectly proper put-down,...

5 tech picks you won’t want to miss this week

We’re in awe at how far technology has come, even in just the past year. Our favorite picks from the past week are so 2012. And that’s a really awesome thing. 1. Check the home thermostat from work? Turn on the fan from carpool? With the invention of one special gadge, the future is here, friends. 2. This new app is as close as you can get to actually being at Disneyland, without spending $6 on a bottle of water. 3. This amazing new digital video baby monitor does everything but burp the baby.  4. Pretty smart phone cases...

Cool branch and robot hanging thingies. (Not actual name, but works for me)

This weekend at the NY International Gift Show, there was so much exciting new design that I can’t wait to share with you all! But one of the first new items that caught my eye was from Hangups and Baggage, a mom-run operation that’s giving boring old coatracks a run for their money. The powder-coated steel ROBOT hangup mounts to the wall, and gives your kids a fun place to hang jackets, jewelry, hats and backpacks. More fun than any hooks I’ve ever seen. Nice touch: It’s magnetic, so you can move that little bow from the neck to...

Pillow fight!

There’s something I need to get off my chest with Valentine’s Day nearly upon us. As much as I cherish my spouse, sometimes this girl needs her space. In bed. I know you know what I’m talking about. Well CMP fave Twisted Twee clearly gets my frustration, and delivers in a major way. I like think of these Your Side, My Side pillowcases as pillowcases with a purpose.  In short: payback for the bed hoggers of the world. And a great V-day gift for couples with a sense of humor. I can’t wait to throw these on the bed to...

Crushing on Pantone’s color of the year: Tangerine Tango

Pantone has decreed that 2012 is the year of Tangerine Tango, which they describe as “a spirited reddish orange that continues to provide the energy boost we need to recharge and move forward.” I couldn’t agree more. It doesn’t hurt that I’ve been nurturing an orange obsession for years. It’s a bright look-at-me neutral. Yes, a neutral. That may sound like a contradiction, but it’s a color that amazingly goes with everything. Plus you don’t have to wear it head to toe in order to feel its power. A little pop of orange goes a long way.  If you’re...

Getting the home organized and prettified at once

Why yes I still am in full-fledged January organization mode, thank you so much for asking! I am spending wayyy too much of my free time (when I’m not organizing, of course) searching for beautiful and functional storage solutions. Aren’t these screenprinted linen/cotton zippered pouches from Ontario’s Jenna Rose Handmade just beautiful? I’d love them for makeup, travel, or the piles of business cards that end up all over my office. It’s the details that are so special, like the leather zipper pulls and the “handmade in Canada” stamp on the inside. I also really like the small cotton canvas hamper which would...

If the shoes fit…

Having three kids means I also have a lot of shoes sitting by my front door. Aside from the fact that the messy pile is probably bad enough to give the president of the neighborhood association a minor heart attack, I’m also pretty tired of tripping on them every time I walk past. Which might explain why I am in love with the look of the adorable Japanese shoe racks over at My Sweet Muffin. In love. They aren’t just ridiculously cute. They’re also brilliant. Four pairs of shoes where I’d otherwise fit one. Perfect. I think I need...

POP! goes the bookend

All around the Ikea bookshelf The bibliophile chased the bookend The bookend stepped on a Kindle plug POP! goes the balloon dog! Not really, though. That’s why these Balloon Dog Bookends by IMM Living from the SFMOMA store are so special– they can’t pop. What they can do is hold up books with style and color. In a new twist (ha!) on kids’ bookends, the airy, ephemeral but unpoppable balloon dog is cast in resin with enough weight to keep those pesky books on the shelf. They’re available in orange and purple and measure in at about the size...

Organizational simplicity + brilliance

I have a confession to make. I have a hard time finding my stuff, and I am always losing something. It’s usually my cell phone (do you even know HOW many times I end up calling it just to locate it?), my keys (darn buggers are always missing), and my purse. Flip and Tumble understands my troubles and is helping me out in a huge way. The clever hooknook serves as the perfect place for my purse, but the coolest part is that it is essentially one big pocket that’s mounted on the wall. My phone, my keys, and all of the other small...

Children’s art that lives forever

I’m one of those mothers that’s a professional organizer’s nightmare. I can hardly bear to part with a single one of my girls’ drawings, whether it’s a 3-D art class project, or a scribble on a napkin. So I always love ways to turn kids’ creations into more formal keepsake pieces, helping to validate my love of all that delicious early artwork. Chooch Magooz is a shop providing those very services, and from what I can tell, what she does with personalized childrens artwork is just gorgeous. Scan your child’s work into a jpg file and she’ll recreate it...

The end. The very end.

Poking around the CB2 website this week, I kinda fell in love with this bookend. Because, we’ll, it’s an end. Called The End. The End bookend is such a cool little hostess gift or just a sunny pick me up for your own bookshelf. I don’t know how heavy it is, but it seems like it could do the job. I suppose it could also have been called The Beginning. But that just doesn’t have the same ring to it. –Liz Find The End bookend online from...

Home is where the heart is

I like pretty designs. I like hearts. I am a girl. It’s not all that complicated. But I don’t believe that girlie has to mean cheesy. A perfect example of that? This funky heart patterned pillow cover. Texturas Urbanas is a one-woman show operated by a visual artist/designer from Buenos Aires. Her creations are imaginative, bright and dynamic. Look at her collection and you just know she is having fun at work. One of our faves from her home spun collection are these soft, cotton pillow covers perfect for the nursery, playroom or even master bedroom. Printed with water based...

How to turn IKEA into MyKEA

I’ve got a love/hate relationship with IKEA. I love it, because it’s reliable, dependable, and honest. I know what I’m getting, and there are no surprises. I hate it at times, for all of the same reasons. IKEA furniture can be dreadfully boring. Sometimes a room calls for more punk than practical. What to do? Thankfully, MyKea offers a solution that rocks awesome. It’s like Threadless meets Ikeahackers. Pick an artist’s motif, and then choose the piece of furniture to cover. The result is an artistic, colorful set of decal stickers that are professionally produced and made to fit....

Leaves of grass, now on your bookshelf

Some books are like cut flowers: I get them, enjoy them, and forget about them. But some books are like lawns, like rich green grass that I want to cultivate and nurture and wiggle between my toes every Spring.  Okay, maybe just the first two. If you, too, have some books that will live on your shelf forever, you might like these adorable GreenMarker bookmarks. The package comes with 75 markers made from sticky Post-It note material that resemble a beautiful bouquet of green grass when placed at different points throughout the book. If you’re sick of dog-ears in...

The Empire Strikes… a smart silhouette

I like Star Wars as much as the next mom. Okay, so maybe I like it a little more than the next mom, considering I can speak a little Huttese. I love that the Star Wars world is timeless, exciting, iconic, and fun, and I really love sharing it with my children. But I’m the first to admit that I’ve never thought of my favorite movie franchise as stylish or chic. But guess what? Now it kind of is. We’re Stormtrooper helmet over heels for this gorgeous trio of Star Wars posters from the handz shop on Etsy. All designs are...

Getting organized just got a whole lot cuter

In the name of back-to-school for the kids and a new full-time job for me, it is high time to get the bills, to-do lists, paperwork, random photos and kiddo artwork into some kind of workable order.  Yes, I’ve said that about 87,000 times this summer alone. But this time I really, really mean it. After all, I didn’t have these cool stick-ems before. Stickr pockets from BUTCH & Harold are going to help me seem more organized than I am–which, in my book, is almost as good as actually being organized.  For $14.95, you get a packet of three adorable...

Modern tea towels that make me want to take up dishwashing

I have a thing for tea towels, but most of the ones I see fall squarely into the Country Living school of design. What, cityfolk don’t dry their dishes too? So I was happy to be introduced to San Francisco studio Studiopatro, which makes lovely linens in more contemporary motifs. At Studiopatro, I love the collection of handpainted, modern tea towels. Wrap one around a bottle of wine, a cookbook, or a selection of artisanal cheeses and you’ve got a fantastic hostess gift for the upcoming summer weekends. Check out the city category, and what at first seems like...
