Fab vintage-style posters to feed your travel fantasies

Israel, London, Venice, Rome, Paris, Amsterdam, Trinidad, Hawaii–I absolutely loved traveling in my younger years. Though I wouldn’t trade being a mom for anything, let’s face it: world travel is not simple (or cheap) when parenthood enters the picture. These days, it seems the farthest I get away is the annual family trek to the Jersey Shore. Happily I’ve found a wonderful way to satisfy my culture-hungry eyes.  The gorgeous retro-vibe prints in the World Travel poster collection from the Anderson Design Group is where it’s at (and where I wish I could be). Their vintage-style travel posters have a fab...

Muppets go modern with the coolest prints for your nursery

Of all my parenting achievements, I’m particularly proud that I’ve passed on a love for The Muppets to my own three kids. And now that they carry their own torch for Kermit, Beaker, and Fozzie Bear, I think they’ll love decorating their rooms with some very cool, very style-forward prints of the gang. Designed by London’s The Retro Inc, our iconic Muppets friends have gone through a mod makeover of sorts, and I just love the results. Grab a trio of your favorite characters for only $10, and the 5×7″ prints will be shipped to you. Or, if you can’t...

Instant heirlooms: custom ceramic plates fired with handwritten family recipes

If your family is anything like mine, all their famous recipes are tucked away in over-stuffed folders and recipe boxes…and only the chef knows for sure where they are. How wonderful would it be to start serving some of Grandma’s famous oatmeal squares atop a handmade pottery plate, with the recipe for those very squares right underneath in her sweet handwriting? The custom recipe plates and serving ware, from Prairie Hills Pottery are pure awesome. Truly, the gifting possibilities are endless. Scan a copy of Dad’s secret lasagna recipe, and the artisans at Prairie Hill will fire it onto...

It’s fun, it’s a wonderful toy.

I am absolutely fascinated with these posters, which bring classic toys to life in new…or old ways really, by use of vintage patent drawings. The Slinky Poster from art collective Oliver Gal might be my favorite, with it’s 40’s-era textbook style industrial drawings. It seems like a parody at first, only it’s not at all. There’s also a LEGO toy figure from 1979, the original LEGO brick from 1961, a Mr. Potato Head, and then another series of faux blueprints inspired by architectural drawings. But grab them quick–they’re on sale at Fab only another day or two.   They’re...

Making your walls a little more literary

I love prints that play with typography. Clever, modern design has a way of turning what could be a cheesy inspirational quote into a piece of art I could live with.   That’s why I love the work by New York graphic artist Evan Roberts on Etsy. These cool literary quote posters inspired by the likes of T.S. Eliot (no, not from Cats), JD Salinger, Jane Austen, Ernest Hemmingway, Kurt Vonnegut. It’s refreshing to see he hasn’t generally picked the most ubiquitous of quotes. Each one is printed beautifully on heavy, archival paper. Look closely and you’ll find lots...

Take some of the guesswork out of shopping for carpet with the new FLOR Possibility Studio

I’ve been itching to replace our dark, faux-Oriental rug in the family room for years. As much as I love shopping from the comfort of my home online, there are times when I could use the advice of a real, live sales associate to talk me through options, color choices, and patterns. You know, so I don’t end up with another dark, faux-Oriental rug. So I’m excited to discover what cool modular-floor carpet tiles company FLOR has just started doing to personalize the online shopping experience, and help insure that everyone loves their floor. Or FLOR. [Don’t miss a...

The walls are alive with the sound of music

This collection of prints in bright colors will make you as happy as a nun on an Austrian hillside. But if you’re not a Sound of Music fan (cretin!) there’s so many other wonderful prints in this super Etsy shop we found. These lively, vibrant prints from Ali G Douglass, an Asheville-based artist, are based on her gouache paintings and printed in archival inks for art that lasts a lifetime. And what’s great is that they’re perfect for that very thing, going beautifully from a nursery to that between-little-kid-and-tween time. Frankly, if my kids were sick of them, I...

The hippest paper dolls in the history of paper dolls. (Possibly a true fact.)

My kids have definitely developed an obsession with paper dolls since I unearthed the ultimate guide to free printable paper dolls on the web. But if you’re willing to spend just a few dollars, I’ve found some that are seriously fantastic. And uh…not just for kids. The paper dolls by illustrator Clauda Varosio are mindblowingly fun, because they’re based on pop culture icons from David Bowie to the Big Lebowski, and even (be still my heart) Annie Hall. They’re as arcane as Vincent Gallo from Buffalo 66, and as sweet as Holly Golightly which would happen to be adorable...

Oh, hello there, Summer! Long time no see. The weather is warmer, the kids are sweatier, and it’s time to pull out the summertime linens. Or, um, it might be that time if I were the kind of person who’s organized enough to have summer linens. And if I were? Well, CMP fave OM Home would be making an appearance on every bed in my house. Serious loveliness. The Novogratz family takes us to Brazil. And you’re invited.

The prolific designers and TV faves Bob and Courtney Novogratz are taking their small CB2 home collection to new places. Specifically Brazil. And I want to go.  The new Novogratz Brasil collection for CB2, just launched this month, is such a funy, cheery way to brighten up your/my decidedly North American pad, at the decent prices and quality CB2 is known for. I’m loving pieces like a duo-toned credenza, a swing chair that makes me pine for a deck, and a bright fuschia punched-metal coffee table that might not be so great for homework, but is perfect for a...

In season: tea towels as fresh as just-picked veggies

Cooking with the windows open, wrists slightly dirty from picking fresh veggies, knife making a crisp choppety-choppety sound–not going to lie. I live for spring and summer produce. But, with cooking comes cleanup, which pales in comparison to eating. Until you discover pure linen tea towels like these. Ahhhh.    From Poketo, featuring sweetly simple, often humorous designs hand-printed in fresh green and vibrant orange, these towels are for more than just wiping countertops. Use them as place mats, kitchen decor, knot one around your waist as an impromptu apron–or, if you’re feeling crafty, use as uber-green gift wrap. They’re naturally more...

Inspiring words for aspiring adults

I’m not generally one for inspirational quotes around the house. But sometimes there are phrases that I just want to think about all day–and I wouldn’t mind my kids spending time mulling them over either.     The Work Hard and Be Nice poster from prolific graphic designer Anthony Burrill is a lovely message to have around, especially over a child’s desk. In fact, he has quite a few in his shop that would fit the bill. Take a look around–one is bound to make you think. Or smile. Or both. Plus they’re so beautifully hand-printed onto recycled paper...

Affordable art makes a very cool mom gift. Maybe even for yourself.

When we were young and carefree (i.e., had no children), my husband and I decided that nothing would grace our walls but original artwork. Flash forward ten years. Yes, there’s original art hanging, but most of it was created by our kids. It’s not that we gave up entirely on our art-collecting dream; it just took a backseat once the babies came along. And that’s where a very nifty site saves the day. Tappan Collective is a terrific site designed to encourage young student-types to decorate with something other than cheap framed Monet posters. But, psst, guess what? I think it’s...

Some walls like to be drawn on.

There’s something about wallpaper that feels like more of a commitment than paint. Maybe it’s the glue. Maybe it’s the hours of labor spent lining it up juuuust right. But I think I’ve found a cute wallpaper idea that might be worth the investment. The new i see you wallpaper from Cavern is covered in black googly eyes on white paper. That’s it. Sounds kind of weird, right? That’s just until your kids have at it with an array of rainbow-colored crayons. (Uh, just make sure they’re old enough to understand exactly which walls of the house they can draw on.)...

Ippinka: the shopping site for the minimalist crowd

I know these days it feels like there’s a new shopping site born every minute. But there’s one I’ve just discovered that’s fast becoming an obsession for me, because the products are so sharp, stylish and imaginative. The site is Ippinka, and they sell only products that adhere to their four principles of good design: functional, well-made, minimalist, and environmentally- and socially conscious.  Love when someone else does all the research for me. Now one huge caveat (and pet peeve) is that you have to register to be able to see the products–though I think I got around that when...

How to decorate with washi tape, without the design degree

I’ve recently found myself in possession of some washi tape, thanks to a few leftover Martha Stewart craft supplies at our recent Sealed With Love Valentine’s party. Not being the crafty mama that a lot of you are (uh, decoupaging my Scotch tape dispenser is not quite high on my to-do list), I’m not exactly bursting with ideas for how to use them. And then I saw this. I love this simple, decorative way to put pretty tapes to non-permanent use: it’s as simple as creating some basic, angular little houses and taping them up over a child’s desk,...

15 of the absolute cutest hedgehog gifts, all handmade

When we first started this site it was birds. Then owls. Then foxes. Now, neck-in-neck with the fox, the cutest animal trend to emerge is definitely hedgehogs. (Not that owls show any sign of going anywhere.) If you think the spiny mammal of the subfamily Erinaceinae is cuter than its Latin name might suggest, well I do too! So I’ve combed the web to share 15 of the cutest handmade hedgehog gifts, toys, tees, artwork and more, all at great prices. After all, they’re too adorable just to come out at night. –Liz Wooden Hedgehog Pendant by decoylab ($16)...

Sleeping on a cloud: heavenly handmade pillows

My girls have a weird obsession with pillows. While they won’t seem to sleep with the proper fluffy kinds, anything that’s an animal, a shape or a giant stuffed doll will do. So add these pretty ones to the list. The handmade cloud pillows hail (ha) from Etsy’s Oh No Rachio, which we’ve already admired for their great stationery and handlettered cards and notebooks. The pillows, however, will make you happy to look at them on a couch or against the back of a rocker. They would make my girls happy to sleep on. And hopefully, I can convince them that...
