Paint inspiration for 4 cool DIY home decor projects. Color nerds, we have you covered.

Where do you go for design inspiration now that the Pinterest feed changes have totally screwed up your experience? If you’re looking for paint inspiration to freshen up your home decor, you need to visit the blog of Colorhouse Paint, a brand that’s a favorite of designers, architects, and eco-conscious parents for its odor-free, low-VOC  paint colors, its eco-friendly manufacturing processes, and even a paint recycling program. I went to the blog to look for some home decor inspiration, then fell down the rabbit hole with so many DIYs and color trend blog posts that I immediately wanted to pin to my boards. What can I say, old habits die hard....

Beep beep! Reader coming through

Bookends are always a smart way to blend function with design in a kid’s room, so I’m often looking for cool ones. I’m taken with the wooden car bookends on My Sweet Muffin, which also happen to be on sale right now. They’re handmade in the Netherlands from rubberwood, then screenprinted. All three designs are pretty cool, but I have to admit a fondness for the not-specifically-a-VW minibus.   The one tough thing will be to get your kids to resist the urge to color them in. Or hey…let them paint them. Why not, right? Find the wooden car bookends on My...

IKEA Kallax: The best storage for families gets a makeover and a name change

I’ve purchased six Expedit storage units from IKEA for our three-child house, so you can imagine my shock when I discovered that they were no longer selling what I consider their most versatile, affordable, and useful storage solution for families. Turns out that the new IKEA Kallax storage system is actually the Expedit system, with a makeover and name change. Hooray! The furniture looks very similar to Expedit, which is good news for those of us who want to add more coordinating pieces. But Kallax has some neat features for families, like slightly rounded edges to make it a bit safer around young kids, and a more durable finish...

A fun tissue holder to get kids smiling through the phlegm.

Kids will always have runny noses. Always. So I’m all for adding a little fun to the dreaded Parental Nose Wipe with this adorable Whale Tissue Holder we spotted at Etsy shop ShopSparklyPony. We think that kids’ tissue holders can be a little corny at times,  but this little whale is a charming work of art. Lovingly hand crafted and–get this– “individually tested for proper tissue-release,” each whale is stamped, dated, signed and numbered so you know your Moby Dick is an original. Because you know that’s just the kind of thing that kids care about when they’re home with a miserable cold....

Bringing a little smile to your kid’s room with a chair

On a day that I’ll take any rays of happiness to brighten up a dreary, snowy day, I smiled the moment I stumbled on the bear and rabbit play chairs by Oeuf furniture–makers of the most beautiful, modern kids furniture. In either a light birch or a dark walnut, the animal shape of the chairs is irresistible. It’s like the best of both worlds–kid-friendly furniture that actually fits into the modern decor of an adult room, too. The total chair height is 24 inches, with the seat about 13-inches off the ground. So it’s probably best for kids in the 2-6 range....

Bezar: The new members-only marketplace for rabid fans of modern design

Well no sooner did Fab co-founder Bradford Shelhammer move onto new ventures, he announced the launch of Bezar, a new members-only site that will feature the same gorgeous products, emerging designers, and great prices that helped put Fab on the map. He has always has amazing taste, and I’m so excited about this new site. Update April, 2017: Bezar is sadly no longer online. For great design, we highly recommend Fab, Gilt Home, RueLaLa Home, Haute Look Home and Chairish, all also accessible through our exclusive invitation codes A quick look at the teaser homepage and I see brands we already...

9 creative makeup storage ideas from sushi mats to candy jars

Confession: I’m still using the not-so-clean plastic Caboodle I got as a high school graduation gift. (Editor’s Note: Noooooo!) So it’s clearly way past time for me to look for some fresh new ways to keep my makeup organized. There are plenty of those lucite cosmetics organizers out there in the drugstores, but I’ve been looking for some more creative, unexpected makeup storage ideas that will give my vanity a needed pop of personality. But of course, it has to keep my stuff accessible too all without making my bathroom look like the MAC counter at Nordstrom. So I spent a ton of time searching the...

All about that bling: 8 modern necklace storage ideas we can’t wait to try

Declutter. That’s my goal for this week, and I’m starting with my jewelry. Whenever I sort through my jewelry box to get organized, I’m always surprised at the pieces I totally forgot I own, simply because I don’t see them. So I tracked down some modern necklace storage ideas that I really love, from store-bought stands to some simple (promise) DIY jewelry storage projects, to help me get my jewelry out where I can see it. After all, it would be nice to wear more than the two necklaces I seem to be alternating between every day!   Rustic gets...

LEGO goes to the birds

It’s going to be a while before I can look out my window and see anything bright and colorful fluttering around my yard, so I’m especially pleased that LEGO has chosen to release LEGO Birds, a brand new set of feathered friends that is so realistic, I may just gaze at them instead. The set features detailed models of a hummingbird, blue jay, and robin, each standing between 5 and 7 inches tall and perched on its own stand with its Latin name in front. There’s even a pamphlet more more info on the species inside. It all adds up to a certain sophistication which means I...

6 easy kids dresser label tricks. A.K.A. how to keep your kids from wearing swimsuits in a snowstorm. Maybe.

I have come across a few little design hack ideas to help keep my kids’ overflowing drawers a little less so–and hopefully, in the process, keep the seven year-old from grabbing the tye-died tank top and gym shorts when it’s 10-degrees and snowing outside. 1. For kids of reading age, you can order custom drawer labels like these nice ones from 3rd Ave Shore on Etsy, shown above. You can of course name them by clothing category, or give them labels like cold weather, warm weather, socks and undies. Depending on how many clothes you have, of course. Around here, we need...

Handcrafted toy chests you’ll love to look at. Not just because they’re hiding all those toys.

It’s that time of year, so I was looking back at our post on colorful toy storage options, and came across the toy chests from Drift Studio. (Thanks, Christina!) So I clicked over to see what was new, and wow. As much as this Brooklyn mama loves the Brooklyn maps toy chest that we originally featured, I really dig the other toy chest designs from this Wisconsin based studio, too. From geometric patterns and graphic jungle animals to retro-toy designs like paper airplanes or jacks, there’s definitely something for any decor. Or hey, maybe it will inspire the decor theme to begin with.   Each chest is gorgeously handcrafted–with a...

So choose wisely. We have shared many awesome-looking growth charts over the years that we love and now we’ve found one more resource: The personalized growth chart decals from Tinyme, the stylish gift company that just keeps on impressing us. 13 of the coolest, prettiest, and most fun printable 2015 calendars. Lots of them free!

Like shopping for new school supplies in the fall, I absolutely love getting a beautiful new calendar each January. It’s a blank slate spread out before me for the coming year, with so much opportunity. While I’ll definitely buy a printed calendar with space to fill in family activities, I also spent time weeding through all those ho-hum printable calendar templates out there, and tracking down some of the best printable 2015 calendars. I love each of these cool calendars so much, I just may have one in my kitchen, in the office,  on my bedside table…can you tell I’m obsessed?   Sometimes I need a good pep talk to conquer...

11 of the coolest 2015 calendars you won’t mind looking at for a year

Is it overkill to hang a different calendar in every room of your house? Because there are so many gorgeous 2015 calendars that I’m struggling to choose just one. Here are 11 of the coolest calendars for next year, ranging from wall calendars to desk calendars to calendars you can use as gift wrap. I say let’s just give ourselves permission to buy as many as we’d like and simply call them pieces of art. They’re all so pretty! Above is Kristina Krogh Studio’s 2015 wall calendar, which combines two of my favorite design elements: black typography and gold foil. Simple yet stunning, it would look...

The little Christmas tree that’s not a Charlie Brown tree

If you’re short on space, before you spring for any new holiday decorations this year, check out Milani’s bright and bouncy beechwood-and-steel small modern Christmas tree on a Spring which does a great job of combining contemporary and fun. It’s small, but doesn’t look kie a Charlie Brown tree. And hey, it won’t shed needles all over your floor. At 12-inches high, this tree doesn’t need a lot of space to liven up a room and, though I love it as is, it can be customized with your own small ornaments and decorations. Grab it in green, red, blue, or multicolored, or set...

This is your brain on embroidery hoop art

I think I’ve found the perfect Christmas gift for my much cooler younger sister (shh, don’t tell). While we have tons of ideas for fun and irreverent best friend gifts, I’m excited about the embroidery hoop art over at Merriweather Council’s Etsy shop, where their wry sense of humor matches their hip design aesthetic. Merriweather Council has been a favorite of ours for a while—have you seen their irresistible monogrammed embroidery necklaces?—and these embroidery hoop art pieces have really gotten us talking. This is a fun, unexpected bit of decor to hang in the kitchen for that pop of vintage coolness.   If you don’t...

Modern holiday table setting tips: A huge array of ideas to keep it easy, affordable, and fun!

Let me first be totally upfront: The idea of setting a holiday table kind of terrifies me. I am not someone who can just effortlessly whip up an Elsa’s castle centerpiece made of handmade gingerbread, or pick up a calligraphy pen and go to town on place cards. I don’t even own fancy china or “holiday” dinnerware because we tend to have holiday dinners elsewhere. I quietly envy the spectacular holiday table settings and place card ideas on Pinterest, and repin them, but in my head I’m thinking, yeah, right. In other words, I’m not living the glorious home decor blogger dream. I’m...

The perfect kids’ chandelier, no lights required

Hanging a chandelier in your dining room or foyer can be gorgeous, of course. But hanging one in your kid’s bedroom or play room? Gorgeous–and totally unexpected. Especially when it’s a brightly colored acrylic kids’ chandelier from Nicole Ketchum, now in the Cool Mom Picks Indie Shop. Granted, these are just decorative chandeliers, so they don’t light up. But that’s even better, right? Since you don’t have to worry about wiring or outlets or fancy little bulbs, you can literally hang them anywhere. I like the idea of thinking outside the box (or house) and suspending a chandelier from a tree branch for an...
