Mattresses in a box? We’ve tried them. Here’s what we think.

I’ve been needing a new mattress for a while now, but the idea of spending $2,000 (or more, yeesh!) on a traditional box spring and mattress set has kept me from heading to the stores to try them out. Because with multiple kids at home, there are a million other things I could spend that money on. Of course, I too have been seeing all the ads over social media for the much cheaper bed-in-a-box companies that ship mattresses right to your home. So, Kristen and I took on the hard job of sleeping (er, mattress testing) so we could share our thoughts on which...

Target Pillowfort launches today, with adorable and affordable kids’ decor that parents will love too.

The exciting new Target Pillowfort collection of kids’ decor launches today at last, and has come along at just the right time. There’s something about being cooped up inside all winter that makes me want to redecorate. Every room. I’m getting bored with the same old stuff especially in my kids’ rooms, which are a mix of remnants of their nursery decor and a couple of cooler, tween-friendly pieces I’ve picked up here and there. Sadly, a full-house re-do isn’t in the budget. But some of the fresh designs in the Target Pillowfort collection might be. From pillows to artwork, full bedding sets, accent furniture, and those cute...

Star Wars fans everywhere (and pretty much the rest of us) know that today is #ForceFriday –the day a whole bunch of new Star Wars gifts and toys goes on sale to help build excitement for the December release of Episode VII The Force Awakens. Also known as The One Where Luke, Leia, and Han are Old. But, you know, not everything new is better. So I have my eye on this super cool new gift that harkens back to the original Star Wars movie that we parents grew up watching. You know, the one when everyone was young. Related: The Sphero BB-8 droid that wins...

Could the new toddler bedding from Aden + Anais keep your kid in bed longer? Hey, we’ll try anything.

I have a four-year-old. And in spite of putting him to sleep in his own bed each night, I wake up to his sweet little face beside me in my bed almost every single morning. I’m okay with that, but I am ready for whatever magical solution may keep him in his own bed once in a while so I’m willing to see if the new Aden + Anais toddler bedding bed in a bag does the trick. This is the same, soft Aden + Anais muslin so many babies these days are being swaddled in (my son, included), but it’s brilliantly designed so that the flat...

Duvet covers from Society6: What all the cool beds will be wearing this year.

We’ve loved the cool indie designs at Society6 on everything from art prints to gadget cases for a long time. So we were pretty stoked to discover that those gorgeous designs are now king-sized. As duvet covers, that is. And yes, queen too. They have hundreds of fun designs, so we’re still narrowing down our choices. It’s not easy.     \       The covers are super soft, machine washable, and include a hidden zipper that doesn’t mar the design. My one disappointment is that they are only offered in queen and king sizes, and I don’t know many kids who sleep in beds that big–unless they’ve...

Oh Joy for Land of Nod: A new line of baby gifts and decor bursting with fun.

When we heard that one of our favorite design bloggers, Joy Cho, was launching the Oh Joy for Land of Nod baby collection, we seriously couldn’t wait to get a look at it. All of her design collaborations have been terrific and we figured this one would be both terrific–and affordable. And so it is. Well, not like thrift shop affordable, but definitely in the realm of baby gifts that people outside the 90210 can afford. Starting today, you’ll find cute, colorful, playful baby gifts with modern touches from artwork to bedding and decor. Even three fun patterns of an elephant...

A kids’ world as cheerful as your kids (or one can hope)

Putting together a nursery or little kid’s room can be a challenge if you’re going for a certain retro-mod Scandinavian rainbow look. I mean, there is nothing out there that fits that exact description. Or wait, maybe there is.   The relaunch of colorful, childlike 70s era German designs from byGraziela designs celebrates every single color in the crayon box, and channels it into kids’ bedding, kids pajamas, German-made dishware, hooded towels, toys and home decor so happy you want to smile. At pots. You’ll be smiling at pots. If you’re the crafty kind, there are even fabrics featuring...

The coolest kids’ bedding: guaranteed to get them into bed the first time you ask

We’re always asked where to find cool bedding for kids, especially once they’ve advanced out of that toddler bed and outgrown the cutesie sheets of preschool and early grades. Well, whoa, I’ve found some that might even redefine the idea of cool bedding for kids. The duvet sets from the Netherlands’ Snurk Bedding are mindblowingly clever. Behold, as the combo of duvet and pillow case suddenly transform your kid’s bed into a life-size astronaut, princess, or even a trampoline. But what’s even cooler is how it looks when your kid is actually under those sheets. The prices are in...

Now I lay them down to sleep

My organic-eating, organic-dressing, organic-playing kids sleep on regular old foam pillows. There, I said it: they spend half of their lives with cuddling up with chemical-filled foam. Not one of the greatest horrors of childhood, of course, but still, I’m so glad to have found an organic pillow alternative When I learned the great pillows by Madii & Dyl online–an awesome Australian kids’ line that’s now available in the US–I was quite excited. They’re sized perfectly for little heads and necks (there’s a toddler size and a child size) and made from 100% organic latex, so they’re naturally hypoallergenic...

Pillow Pets – The cool, cotton, fair trade kind

I’m fortunate to have a daughter who takes violin right next to the Blabla Kids storefront in Atlanta, so every week, I poke my head in to say hello to their lovely staff and design team, and take a peek at what’s new. And just wait until you see the cuteness that’s now available on their website. Their new Hold Me Tight pillows instantly made me think of Pillow Pets, except they’re cooler, softer, and made by fair trade Peruvian artisans like all of the Blabla Kids goodies we’ve featured here on Cool Mom Picks. I love the whimsical...

Here a dot, there a dot…

I am fond of the polka dot. As a little girl, I had a white dress with red polka dots and it was my absolute favorite. Now, as a mom, I tend to restrict my dottiness to dressing my daughters and for their nursery. One of the many fabulous attributes is it mixes well with everything else in a nursery. They’re playful, modern and just sweet enough. So, when a CMP fave, Winter Water Factory, designed a new organic collection of sheets exclusively for Land of Nod featuring polka-dots, I have to admit, I felt a little giddy. [don’t...

Welcome to the Jungle House Pillow

My kids (probably like yours) aren’t lacking for stuffed animals. But when I saw the amazingly adorable Jungle House Pillow from Toronto’s So Chic Gifts I knew I could totally justify getting them this handmade pillow-and-stuffed-animal combo.  Made from beautiful recycled fabric, each one-of-a-kind soft, squishy pillow features three little critters tucked into little pocket homes, each one a different combination of cloths and textures. It’s totally fun for kids, since the stuffed animals can be taken out of their pockets at playtime or put back in for cuddling at night. If their bed is already crowded with lovies, or if...

The real tooth fairy – keep away from open mouse traps

Only recently did I learn that the origins of the tooth fairy may come from a French fairy tale called The Good Little Mouse (La Bonne Petite Souris ) in which a fairy mouse convinces a mean prince to be nice so that his teeth will turn beautiful and white. Yes, it’s a little weird. But aren’t they all? The whole thing is explained on the hang tag of the sweet new tooth fairy pillow, just out now from one of my favorite indie baby gift companies, Petite Miette. L.A. mom/designer Sarah Odenkirk has designed the pillow out of...

Sweet dreams are a good gift for moms, too

My parents can’t help it – they see something cute for the kids and they buy it. I suppose that’s The Prerogative Of The Grandparent. My only hope is that their version of cute is my version of cute (and that it doesn’t happen to be loaded up with cadmium). Well recently my kids’ Grammy scored with a stop at the boutique of fabulous local kids’ playspace Appleseeds, and the procurement of two deliciously soft cuddle pillows from Angel Dear. These half-moon shaped pillows are actually cuddly friends like bunnies and puppies and sleeping elephants, and are apparently stuffed...

Dwell bedding provides some sweet girly dreams

When I went on the hunt for new toddler bedding for my daughter recently, I was amazed at some of the adorable options out there these days. One that really caught my eye is the Paper Dolls duvet set from Dwell Home Furnishings. The bedding features the classic paper dolls in fresh modern colors that are sweet and girly without being frilly. I love that this set says “girl” and not “baby,” which I think she will appreciate as well. And it will easily transition with her from little girl as she grows into a (gasp!) big girl. Well,...

At least the inanimate people around here are getting some sleep at night now

At two, my youngest daughter is already into dolls in a way that her big sister never was. She pushes them in strollers, shares her dessert with them, and gives them rides on the bulldog–much to the bulldog’s dismay. She tucks her dolls into bed with her with so much care and sweetness and kindness, that it almost makes up for the fact that she was shrieking bloody murder moments beforehand when I told her she couldn’t sleep in my bed. (Ah, two. Such a glorious, glorious age.) And now she is going to be able to tuck Rose...
