A clever idea to get kids in the kitchen on their own, no nagging (or even talking!) required.

My boys have been cooking alongside me ever since they were little. But now that they’re older and I’d love for them make their own breakfast, prep their own snacks, and put together their own lunches from time to time, I’m finding it harder to get them into the kitchen on their own. One issue might be that I call the kitchen my kitchen. That can’t help. Another issue may be all my yapping (that’s code for nagging). I want them to be autonomous, but it’s impossible not to chime in on everything from their snack choices to the kitchen rules, which they...

The SodaStream Power sparkling water maker: Is it really worth it?

I admit I have always coveted a SodaStream ever since I tried an earlier model at my parents’ house. However theirs seemed pretty big to me, and I live in a small apartment, where we’re supposed to subscribe to the rule about not owning single-purpose appliances (bread makers, panini presses) to cut back on clutter. But since becoming addicted to a different company’s fizzy water maker — until it fizzled out and was entirely discontinued — I leapt at the chance to try out the new SodaStream Power. Oh, was it worth the wait. The SodaStream Power is way sleeker than I was expecting, with a slim...

She’s going to be your sherpa through...

Clever personalized plates that let kids play with their food the fashionable way.

Parents of picky eaters, rejoice! The solution to your dinnertime drama might be as simple as a personalized plate… and a cookie cutter. Little Me personalized plates and dress-up cutters for kids are designed to inspire creativity with food, but I’ve found them to be extremely helpful in getting my son to simply eat his dinner. Turns out chicken nuggets are infinitely more exciting when served next to an illustration resembling your child, and that my son’s spinach cakes actually get eaten when they’re cut into the shape of pants and a shirt. Well, mostly. We still haven’t had a dinner that doesn’t end with me begging...

The freedom clip for Keurig 2.0 gives you java freedom of choice. Power to the people!

Last summer, Keurig Green Mountain released the latest version of their K-Cup brewer, the Keurig 2.0, with a new feature that only allows brewing of authorized K-Cup pods. Convenience coffee drinkers across the nation were understandably up in arms, but they can rest now (or be more alert?) thanks to the Freedom Clip for Keurig 2.0 from Rogers Family Company. This small plastic device essentially overrides the lockout technology and allows the new Keurig machine owners to brew coffee of their choice from most non-approved K-Cup type pods. Oh yeah, and it’s free. How’s that for sticking it to a monopoly? Of course this isn’t all about benevolence;...

Mama’s Milk Warmer: you’ll never have to wait for water to boil again

It’s 3 a.m. and your baby is screaming at the top of her lungs. You are trying to heat up breast milk as quickly as humanly possible. Microwaving creates hot spots and potentially burnt mouths. Placing a bottle in a pot of boiling water makes it bob up and down and almost always burns you. And that fancy bottle warming gadget you registered for? Much more complicated to use than anticipated. If you’ve ever tried warming breast milk from the fridge or freezer, chances are one of those scenarios rings a bell. That’s why a company called Nutto created  Mama’s Milk...

Define Bottles: Fruit-infused water bottles because, yum.

My son would drink juice all day long if I’d let him. I obviously don’t, because wow, there’s a lot of sugar in juice, but I know he wants something tastier than water all day long. So this week we’ve been trying out the Define fruit-infused water bottles for a healthy, portable alternative to juice that has more flavor than water, but none of the additives from the flavored waters on the shelf. The Define bottle was invented by a now 15-year-old boy named Carter–how cool is that? He wanted to combat diabetes and childhood obesity by figuring out an alternative to sugary drinks. The final result...

The Mastrad Purefizz Soda Maker: The ultimate soda maker, as in, get one.

UPDATE AUGUST 20, 2015: So, it’s been a year now that I’ve been using Mastrad’s Purefizz Soda Maker and suddenly…it just wasn’t working. Ugh. Like, the cap wasn’t fitting correctly and required (i.e. wasted) sometimes 4-5 CO2 chargers to get one bottle that worked. I contacted the company and they have indeed discontinued the product because of some manufacturing problems. However customer service is extremely responsive, and if you own a Purefizz Soda Maker and are experiencing issues, I suggest you contact them too. Sorry for any inconvenience. Looks like it’s time to finally break down and get a Soda Stream.  -Liz  ...

I love a good glass of wine any time of the year, but especially during the summer months. The weather makes wine feel casual and my favorite summer wine accessories make drinking it easy. Hope they help you too.   In the summer I nearly exclusively drink from my GoVino glasses, which we count among our picnic essentials here at Cool Mom Picks. Pop the filled capsules into the...

Embossed custom rolling pins: Mad tools for mad baking skills.

I finally understand the benefit of those embossed, custom rolling pins. I love to bake for my family, especially a yummy batch of homemade cookies, but it all turns tragic when I try to decorate them. Well, I don’t have to be awesome at it to love baking, so I’m itching to get my hands on one of the amazing custom rolling pins from Valek’s Rolling Pins on Etsy. These wooden rolling pins remind me of my grandmother’s kitchen, but they are embossed...

Geek out with these earth science drinking glasses

I’ve somehow collected way too many pint glasses over the years that aren’t necessarily my taste, especially since I’ve been out of college for awhile. I’m pretty sure I’m due for a glassware upgrade, which is why I’ve got my eye on these unique earth science drinking glasses at the shop we always find cool stuff, Uncommon Goods. I’m not sure what I love more; that this set of four drinking glasses was made here in the USA, or that they’re completely science-geeked out with the four sections of the universe–ocean, earth, atmosphere, and space.   And in case you’re not super...
