How to scare up the hot new LEGO Monster Minifigures in time for Halloween

You know what’s scary? When LEGO comes out with a new series of 16 LEGO Monster Minifigures that would be perfect for Halloween, but when you go to their website to snag a few to surprise the kids, you see that they are all sold out. {cue scream audio} OK, so maybe this isn’t really a tragedy on any level, but have you gotten a look at these fabulously horrific creatures? We’re looking around at our affiliate Amazon and wow! There’s the disheveled Zombie Businessman minifig holding a tiny newspaper whose headline only says BRAAAINS. There’s the bright green Plant Monster minifig, the creepy Spider...

Designer LEGO jewelry for the kid at heart.

We’ve been fans of jewelry designer JacQueline Sanchez‘s  Forever Young collection of LEGO jewelry since, well, forever ago. The artist makes rings, necklaces, earrings, bracelets, and more with LEGO bricks that are more like designer pieces than a craft project you might find on Etsy. There are even blinged-out LEGO jewelry pieces embellished with a diamond, for the fanciest kids at heart. So when shopping for my husband’s Valentine’s Day gift, I was so glad to discover her LEGO heart cuff links–now on sale for 20% off, too! I’m always looking for something romantic yet playful, sentimental but not stuffy. And since watching him play LEGOs with with...

A LEGO Hogwarts that’s not to be believed.

I am always a little proud of myself when I help my kids with a difficult LEGO design, or find just the piece they’ve been searching for in our big bin, but my accomplishments pale in comparison to what one dedicated mom in Seattle did with those little plastic pieces. She made an entire LEGO Hogwarts. Alice Finch’s labor of LEGO love took 18 months and more than 400,000 bricks. The finished version of Harry Potter’s Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry is so detailed and accurate, Hermione Granger herself would approve.  You can read the full story and see more of...

LEGO goes to the birds

It’s going to be a while before I can look out my window and see anything bright and colorful fluttering around my yard, so I’m especially pleased that LEGO has chosen to release LEGO Birds, a brand new set of feathered friends that is so realistic, I may just gaze at them instead. The set features detailed models of a hummingbird, blue jay, and robin, each standing between 5 and 7 inches tall and perched on its own stand with its Latin name in front. There’s even a pamphlet more more info on the species inside. It all adds up to a certain sophistication which means I...

Fun zipper pulls: The fall accessory our kids are collecting

When I walked down my son’s school hallway this week I couldn’t help but giggle when I saw four identical backpacks hanging from the hooks outside his classroom. (Take note: purple leopard print is a big hit with third graders right now. That may or may not scare you.) One way to let your kid stand out when he wants to match with his friends—or to at least be able to quickly figure out which bag is his—is to seek out some trendy backpack accessories, and my kids happen to be big fans of fun zipper pulls these days. They’re super cute, very collectible, and they can even...
