2017 EWG best safe sunscreens for kids and babies: Which is the most affordable?

Every year, I take a look at the Environmental Working Group’s report on the best safe sunscreens for kids and babies. This list measures popular brands against the EWG’s standards, including everything from worrisome ingredients to false marketing claims. Not every top-ranked tube of lotion is the same value for the dollar, though, so I’ve broken down all 19 of their best safe sunscreens for kids by price per ounce. Because I’ll bet there are other parents like me, who want safe products for their kids but don’t feel the need to spend more money than necessary. Your essential guide to the best, safe tick repellents for kids right now. Because, eek.

We’re not alarmists around here, but we admit, we’ve been researching safe tick repellents for our own kids. The data we’re seeing on the booming tick population around the country this spring is a little disconcerting, and overall, Lyme disease has been on the rise — at least tripling since the 1990s. Kind of scary for those of us with kids who love to be outdoors. So, I’ve been rolling up my sleeves to scout out the best, safe tick repellents for kids. Because yes to kids playing outside all day — but a massive no to any associated parental anxiety. CMP...

Auspect: A luxury skincare line that does wonders for aging skin, no Botox required.

The more my skin (ahem) matures, the more I’m willing to spend a little more to step up my skincare game without succumbing to Botox. If you hear me, then definitely take a look at the new-to-the-US luxury skincare line called Auspect. Especially with spring right around the corner. The line is all about medically developed formulas that skip the gross chemicals and artificial fragrances. Just ethically sourced, natural ingredients you can identify. And wow, are the results fantastic. Let’s just say I have tried a whole lot of luxury skincare products for potential review lately, and very very few make...

Primal Pit Paste review: A natural deodorant that really works. Really. Stop making that face.

If we’re going to talk about natural deodorant, there’s no way it’s not going to get a little TMI up in here, which I’m okay with if you’re okay with. Because if you’re like me, you’ve had to use the strongest deodorant formulas, you know, the ones in the box that are one step down from prescription level, and you don’t feel so great about slathering it under your arms every morning and then scrubbing like crazy to get it off. That’s where Primal Pit Paste natural deodorant comes into the story and saves the day. Our beauty expert Kristyn Rudnet actually...

A quick, natural skincare routine for tweens and teens from an expert

When it comes to tween and teen skin, and figuring out the skincare routine that will work best for them, I like to take the less is more approach — at least until action is really needed. When I was younger, I had great skin until I started trying out all sorts of different products on them. Then I went back to using natural skincare solutions, and thankfully it calmed my skin down again. So if you’ve got a tween or teen with normal skin and no serious skin problems — which might require a visit to a dermatologist or your...

The best drugstore makeup for tweens and teens: Top picks from a pro

Now that some of our girls are starting to hit the age where they’re asking about more than just a little flavored lip balm, we turned to an expert to offer us advice about makeup for tweens and teens. Because things have come a long way since we were all first experimenting with navy mascara and body shimmer as young women ourselves. We’re so pleased to welcome our new beauty columnist Kristyn Rudnet of Shimmer and Spice, who’s a talented east coast makeup artist (we’ve been lucky enough to use her ourselves!), style director, and skin guru who has...

The EWG 2016 safest sunscreens for kids: which are most affordable?

Every year, we have turned to the Environmental Working Group’s Annual Guide to Sunscreens to help us make more educated decisions about what are the safest sunscreens to slather on our kids (and ourselves) each summer. But we often find that when you break down the prices, whoa — it’s expensive to get safe sunscreens for kids! Especially considering how much we’re using. So this year we thought we’d take a good look at their short list of the EWG Best Kids’ Sunscreens, find the average prices online (generally from Amazon, Drugstore.com, or the brand’s own website if the product isn’t widely available at...

The best bug sprays for Zika virus protection and how to apply them safely. Because we’d like to panic as little as possible about our kids, thanks.

This year, the Zika virus is on my mind (and everyone else’s, I imagine) so I’ve been avidly researching the best bug sprays for Zika virus protection. It happens that my daughter is extremely allergic to mosquito bites, so when she goes outside in the summertime, I make sure she’s covered head to toe in insect repellent — and for extra precaution, she wears one of those wristband mosquito repellents too. So you can see that this is an issue for me.   Do Non-Toxic Bug Sprays work against the Zika virus? Because she wears so much spray, I...

7 favorite beauty product splurges that are absolutely worthwhile.

Okay so let’s start with a disclaimer: When I describe beauty products I can’t live without, I’m being a bit hyperbolic. Do they fall under food? No. Clothing? No. Shelter? No, unless we’re talking sunscreen should I ever be stranded on a tropical island. So of course I could live without these beauty products. However do I prefer having them in my life rather than alternatives? Heck yeah. I have tried a whole lot of beauty products over the course of my life — trials (and mistakes) from department store beauty counters, gifts in goodie bags, hand-me downs from friends who somehow had extras,...

5 smart, simple, pediatrician-recommended winter skin care tips for babies and kids.

With cold weather pretty much here for lots of us, and on the way for the rest of us (wah!), this is the time of year we start getting more reader questions about baby and kids’ skincare. I know it’s hard to weed through all the info; I’m sure you’ve read all sorts of things about what to do, what not to do, which of those lotions and potions in your medicine cabinet to use, and how to differentiate a minor skin issue from something that might require more attention If you’re like me, by the time you figure out what you’re...

ParaKito: A natural alternative to mosquito repellents for kids.

My son will be heading off to day camp later this month where he will swim, run, climb, and, quite possibly, be eaten alive by mosquitoes. Since I’m not too keen on him reapplying toxic chemicals all over himself midway through the day, I’m glad to have found a natural option in the ParaKito mosquito repellent band that will help keep those itchy biters away from his limbs. This soft, colorful neoprene band is one of the easiest ways I’ve found to get kids ready for a full day in the great outdoors. Just fasten the velcro tab around their arm or ankle and off...

The EWG list of the safest sunscreens for kids. Just in time for summer

Each year, I check out the Environmental Working Group’s Guide to Sunscreens to find the safest sunscreens for kids. With a slew of fair-skinned redheads in my family, I feel like I go through gallons of sunscreen each summer, and while I’m not all-organic-all-the-time, I do tend to splurge on lotions that are safer for my kids and lower in chemicals since we use so much of them all season. Related: What is the safest sunscreen for kids and babies? If you haven’t yet been to the site,  EWG ranks an impressive 1700 products, from spray sunscreen to lip balm with SPF, and scores them (lower numbers are...

An all-natural skin care line that’s seriously awesome. Even if the name is silly.

I’ll admit that I was skeptical at first of a company with a nonsensical name like Meow Meow Tweet natural skin care products, but I’ve been quickly won over by their hand-crafted products. The small-batch skin care company makes everything in Brooklyn using only organic ingredients, like raw plant oils and cold-pressed essential oils, and all of their products are preservative-free, vegan, and certified cruelty-free. And the packaging! I’m a sucker for lotions and potions in glass bottles. Besides being better for the environment than plastic, they just look so fancy on my bathroom counter — if out of reach of the kiddos, of...

Making mom queen for a day. At least in her bathroom.

There are plenty of online retailers (and PR emails in our inbox) declaring, “Find your mom the perfect gift this Mother’s Day!” Turns out they’re talking everything from hair color to bathing suits. But one site that I think totally delivers on the suggestion: The Body Shop. Not just because of their fair trade purchasing and ethical practices, but because they have so many smart, affordable Mother’s Day gift ideas, like the limited edition Treat Me Like a Queen tote bag. Spend $30 on products to fill it, and the bag is yours for another $30.There are great options among their limited edition skincare products with...

Naturally gentle baby skincare from everyone’s favorite giraffe

Other than diapers and onesies when it comes to babies, is there anything more iconic than Sophie the Giraffe? Even my friends without kids recognize the now ubiquitous French baby teether. So so it makes sense that she’s branching out into the new Sophie la Girafe Bath and Baby line. (So fancy, that giraffe.) This is a new line of natural and organic beauty and bath products made just for babies, and when I say natural and organic, the folks who created the Sophie baby skincare line have really done their homework, eliminating potential allergens, synthetic perfumes and dyes, no-no’s for parents like parabens and phthalates, and...

Tata Harper Revitalizing Body Oil: Just, wow.

This year, I was delighted to be treated to a most surprising gift: A bottle of Revitalizing Body Oil from the brand Tata Harper, which is not new to these pages but was new to me. Since then, I have not stopped telling friends about it. Seriously. Ask the rest of the Cool Mom Picks team and they’ll be like, “we know! we know!” As someone who is super picky about lotions, oils, and other beauty products (and gets to sample a whole lot of them) I’m not often so impressed so quickly. A natural skincare gift for your cosmetic junkie friend in need of rehab.

If you have a cosmetics junkie friend–you know what I mean–it may be time for a gift that takes thing back to a natural, cleansing place. And a new line I just discovered,  Board and Batten, could be a perfect fit with their “farm to skin” products–kind of like farm to table, only you know. For skin. There is no shortage of high-quality non-toxic skincare brands out there, but I love a brand that sources all of its ingredients from their very own Florida farm, and handcrafts the products in small batches, too. You won’t find parabens, GMOs, sulfates or synthetic fragrances here. Instead, expect skin-loving natural ingredients like...

If you can’t get to the spa, Spa Heroes brings the spa to you. In a box.

I’m really digging the newest spin on beauty subscription boxes, which are now providing full sized products  instead of appealing to the dabblers with a bunch of trial-sized samples. Along with BeautyDNA, the newest beauty subscription service to enter the full sized category is called Spa Heroes. Each Spa Heroes beauty box contains a spa product carefully vetted by a panel of ingredient-savvy professionals who only choose products free of stuff like parabens, hydroquinone and propylene glycol. Spa Heroes speaks to my green juice-loving side since all products are also formulated to go beyond beauty and support well-being–just like a trip to the spa. Your products will arrive in the most...
