Every year, I take a look at the Environmental Working Group’s report on the best safe sunscreens for kids and babies. This list measures popular brands against the EWG’s standards, including everything from worrisome ingredients to false marketing claims. Not every top-ranked tube of lotion is the same value for the dollar, though, so I’ve broken down all 19 of their best safe sunscreens for kids by price per ounce. Because I’ll bet there are other parents like me, who want safe products for their kids but don’t feel the need to spend more money than necessary. Damn you, Facebook ads: We tried the FLEX disposable tampon alternative, and here’s how it worked for us. In full detail (sorry).
I’m coming up on my 25thish anniversary of my first visit from Aunt Flo. And over that those 2.5 decades, I’ve had the same exact routine every month: tampons and pads. I wasn’t necessarily looking to spice things up in that department, but when I saw the ads on Facebook for a free trial box of FLEX disposable tampon alternatives, I figured, why not give them a try? And then share every sordid detail with the entire Internet. So, here’s how my tampon-free week went, so you can see if making the switch is right for you. FLEX: What is it? (No, really.) Okay, so...Read More
I tend to get headaches when I use strong chemical cleaning products, especially when I’m cleaning a small space, like my bathroom, which is why I really do favor green cleaning products under one condition: they have to work. And since it’s time for some spring cleaning around my house (actually, let’s be honest, it’s way past time for that) I’m excited to have had the chance to test out a ton of green cleaning products lately, and put together my favorites. Besides keeping the chemicals out of our home and our air, it’s nice to be able to give the...Read More
There’s no denying to new parents that a bottomless stash of diaper wipes is essential in every way. But what’s awesome is how many beauty wipes are available for adults too, taking the place of messier products you might own to make our busy lives on-the-go a whole lot easier. I’m a wipes fan, but I’m awfully picky when it comes to ingredients. To earn a place in my own purse — and on my body — a wipe has to be non-toxic, gentle, and do a heck of a job, whatever its job. Whether you’re in the car, on an airplane, or sweating through your...Read More
Is there anything worse than finding mouse droppings in your house? Oh, right. There is: Finding a palm-sized wolf spider in your kid’s bed. Ask me how I know. Luckily, I’ve found a company that makes all-natural pest repellent, which means you don’t have to burn your house down and move to a different country thanks to some unwelcome creature finding its way into your home. It’s called Stay Away, and it really works. Stay Away makes several different products, each crafted of all-natural, botanical, kid- and pet-safe ingredients. Whether your latest enemies are rodents, spiders, moths, ants, or beetles...Read More
A delicious-smelling perfume that’s also a bug spray? That actually works? Shut the front door. It’s true. As a mosquito magnet and a fan of artisan fragrances, I’ve found my new best friend. It’s called Aromaflage, and I would wear it even if it didn’t protect me from mosquitoes. That’s how good it smells. Aromaflage currently comes in three different formulas: Original, Wild, and Sleep. I tried Original and Wild, and they are both lovely. Original hinges on vanilla and orange for a light, fun, tropical fragrance with a little grounding woodiness to keep it from being candylike or...Read More
I have a confession: I’m a recovering cereal addict. I could eat it for breakfast, lunch, and dinner—and have on occasion—and, would eat it at every snack time if I could. As would my kids. In fact, cereal is one my of our secret ingredients when making a few of my favorite go-to homemade snacks for the kids. So easy, since we tend to have some of them around the house anyway. (I mean, have you seen our original homemade baked bereal milk donut video tutorial? Win!) However like so many other parents, I’m not down with a steady diet of foods containing artificial...Read More
My husband has a habit of calling our household cleaning supplies “chemicals” — as in, “Where are the chemicals to clean off the kitchen table?” It kind of drives me crazy because it sounds so harsh. But, of course, he’s right. So recently, I’ve started using the new Force of Nature cleaning system which I had a chance to try, and let’s just say, I’m a new covert. Force of Nature is part science lesson (I’ll get to that later) and part all-natural cleaning solution consisting of nothing but water, salt, and vinegar that you can use anywhere in your home, on anything. Toys and...Read More
Along with eating an entire bag of Cadbury Mini Eggs (ugh), I’ve kicked off the Easter season by dyeing dozens of Easter eggs with my kids. And since our family consumes a ton of hardboiled eggs, I like to use natural dyes on them whenever possible. I’ve used the eco-kids eco egg coloring kit before and this year it has gone even more green, so to speak, with the inclusion of a grass-growing kit that is way more eco-friendly and educational than packages of neon-colored synthetic grass. Related: How to dye Easter eggs naturally: Step-by-step instructions and inspiration I have to admit I was a bit skeptical that anything more...Read More
We’re so excited to wrap up our year by featuring our very top picks in all sorts of categories, starting with our very favorite cool baby gifts and gears that were new or new to us in 2015. This is a tough category to be sure, so we went through our archives, talked to our editors and writers, and put together the few from our archives that we think deserve an extra special nod this year. And perhaps a spot on your baby registry too! In no particular order…our picks for coolest baby gifts and gear of 2015. This...Read More
I like to buy natural cleaning products and supplies as much as I can. In fact, I follow my mom’s mantra and use vinegar and water only on my hardwood floors. It’s partly because I get headaches when I walk in the door and my house smells like a hospital ward, and partly because I know that breathing in a lot of harsh chemicals just isn’t good for us, so I’m always glad to discover a new company that makes eco-friendly cleaning products that actually work. Mrs. Jones’ Soapbox is one of those, and it’s a great find. Related: 2 fabulous new natural laundry products that actually work I admit I...Read More
Fall may be our favorite season — with its cooler temperatures, hot coffees, and the chance to laugh at pumpkin spice everything. But cold and flu season most definitely is not our favorite. A few of us have already been feeling the sniffles, so we’ve put together 11 great natural cold and flu remedies for kids, that we all tend to turn to before heading the medicine route. The other thing we tend to do that’s all natural? Get out our thermometers to make sure our kids aren’t just faking their symptoms to get out of school. (Ha.) How cool is this world map muslin baby blanket from Modern Burlap? I saw it and was instantly taken with this shop, that features some truly lovely baby gifts. Some nearly as cool as the map. (Ha. No, really lots of them are cool. It really is a great shop.) What makes their designs special though, is that the entire collection is in black in white. Not just is that totally on trend for both home and nurseries, but it’s smart. After all, what colors do babies see best? Exactly. Take a look at some of the adorable baby blankets in the shop and...Read More
My son will be heading off to day camp later this month where he will swim, run, climb, and, quite possibly, be eaten alive by mosquitoes. Since I’m not too keen on him reapplying toxic chemicals all over himself midway through the day, I’m glad to have found a natural option in the ParaKito mosquito repellent band that will help keep those itchy biters away from his limbs. This soft, colorful neoprene band is one of the easiest ways I’ve found to get kids ready for a full day in the great outdoors. Just fasten the velcro tab around their arm or ankle and off...Read More
Each year, I check out the Environmental Working Group’s Guide to Sunscreens to find the safest sunscreens for kids. With a slew of fair-skinned redheads in my family, I feel like I go through gallons of sunscreen each summer, and while I’m not all-organic-all-the-time, I do tend to splurge on lotions that are safer for my kids and lower in chemicals since we use so much of them all season. Related: What is the safest sunscreen for kids and babies? If you haven’t yet been to the site, EWG ranks an impressive 1700 products, from spray sunscreen to lip balm with SPF, and scores them (lower numbers are...Read More
I’ll admit that I was skeptical at first of a company with a nonsensical name like Meow Meow Tweet natural skin care products, but I’ve been quickly won over by their hand-crafted products. The small-batch skin care company makes everything in Brooklyn using only organic ingredients, like raw plant oils and cold-pressed essential oils, and all of their products are preservative-free, vegan, and certified cruelty-free. And the packaging! I’m a sucker for lotions and potions in glass bottles. Besides being better for the environment than plastic, they just look so fancy on my bathroom counter — if out of reach of the kiddos, of...Read More
I found out today that 30 percent of moms living below the poverty line can’t afford the diapers they need for their babies. As in, sometimes their kids have to wear the same diaper all day long because that’s all they have. I shouldn’t be entirely surprised when you look at the poverty issues with mothers in particular, but no mom should have to choose between food and diapers for her kids at the end of the day. And with Mother’s Day coming up, it really makes us think about those moms who could use a lot more than a...Read More
Ridiculously delicious, all-natural Easter candy options that earns their place in the basket. Bring it on Easter bunny.
Let’s be honest: Easter candy is pretty much sugar and more sugar mixed with high fructose corn syrup with a dash of artificial food coloring. And we love every bite. I’m a believer in everything in moderation and am all for Easter being one of two days a year when we throw moderation for candy out the window. That said, if we can add a few all-natural options to the basket, I’m all for that, too. When all-natural Easter candy is as good as these 7 finds, why not. With a houseful of kids with sensitive skin, I stick to my free and clear laundry detergents and skip the boosters, fabric softeners, and stain sticks just to be safe. But after discovering these two new natural laundry products, I’ve enjoyed clothes and towels that are softer, smell much nicer, and have fewer, if any, stains. Hooray! So I couldn’t wait to share them, should you also want some cool natural laundry detergents. From the folks at B&N Laundry, I’m loving the felted goat milk stain stick (above). Yes, I know that sounds totally bizarre, but wow, it really works well! This family-run company discovered that goat milk...Read More
When it comes to high-end infant strollers, it’s still hard to beat the love parents have for the Bugaboo Chameleon. We appreciate its lay-flat bassinet for babies who are always somehow ready to sleep riiiiight when we need to leave the house. But here’s the thing: babies are messy. So when you’ve made an investment in a stroller like a Bugaboo, you might want to consider one more accessory, like a stroller liner, to help keep the fabric looking new. – Don’t miss a 50% off limited time offer below – Years ago, Liz discovered NaturalMat, the makers of outrageously good, if pricey, handmade and...Read More
