11 wonderful inspirational nursery prints that you might not think to buy for a baby’s room

I’m long past the days of decorating a baby’s room (sniff), but when you find inspirational nursery prints this wonderful and beautifully designed, it’s a wonder we ever used to settle for those ubiquitous licensed children’s characters or generic animals. After having looked at so many of these wonderful inspirational quote prints that weren’t necessarily designed as baby gifts — but happen to make great ones — I’ll be snagging some for my friends who are having babies. And maybe even a few for our own home that my elementary-aged kids will love. Because I figure if I’ve got any job as a mom, it’s...

Custom Star Wars family portraits: The ultimate holiday gift from a galaxy far, far away. Or you know, Etsy.

Since Star Wars is back this year in full force (ha, get it?) we bet a whole lot of you will be thrilled to see your families done up as your favorite characters in these custom Star Wars family portraits. (Update: The shop is sadly no longer operating. For a similar option, be sure to check out the custom Star Wars family portrait from Henry James Paper Goods, another fave Etsy shop!) Illustrator and designer Thomas Brush of the Modern Brush has a really charming, modern style that I’d say makes the result more playful and fun than intensely realistic. In other...

No Sleep Til Brooklyn: The earworm of parents everywhere

If you had told me, way back when, that one of my favorite tracks off Licensed to Ill would end up being the anthem of new parenthood — and not of rockin’ this party eight days a week — I’d never have believed you. And yet there I was years later, cradling a non-sleeping newborn oh, about a zillion times, with the lyrics to No Sleep to Til Brooklyn running through my head on a loop. Whether you’re in the 718 like me or just a Beastie Boys fan, I think you’ll smile at the No Sleep Til Brooklyn art print at Brooklyn Makers.  Created...

Where to find the cutest French baby gifts and room decor without the $2000 plane ticket.

I always love finding and sharing European brands for kids that we don’t see so regularly around our parts, but mostly, they’re actually in Europe. That isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but you know, shipping. Well it turns out a French expat maman in LA was missing the beautiful things from her homeland too, and brought them here in one lovely little kids’ boutique called Tiny Frenchy. Warning: clicking over may tax your credit cards. The baby accessories, gear, and kids’ room decor only come from independent French designers, many of whom are moms themselves. In other words, think Cool French Mom...

If you’re the type who hears news about kids needing to get outdoors more and wonder just who the heck they’re talking about, have we got an awesome pick for you. My Outdoor Alphabet is a series of beautifully designed posters, baby onesies and tees that bring to life the language of cyclists, backpackers, alpinists, skiers, and paddlers of all kinds. For example, the cyclist’s alphabet takes you from aero bars to Team Z, with J for jersey, K for kickstand, and M for Musette. There’s a small description at the bottom to fill you in on each one in...

Wonderful custom artwork for babies, kids, and kids at heart.

I still think that a great piece of personalized art can be one of the best baby shower gifts, provided you know the parents’ taste. And uh, the kid’s name. Of course. But I think this new discovery should fit the bill for lots of families and lots of styles. The new Jr. Alexander collection from Alexander & Co adds even more fantastic vintage advertising inspired custom wall art for kids and it’s hard to pick a favorite. Artist Alexander Doll has created options that are lovely for babies and young kids, and some that are even cool for older kids — or hey, dads....

The classic world map gets an arty twist

If you have a thing for maps and globes and geography in general, then you might love this as much as I do: a paintsplatter world map spotted at The Fancy. It would be so beautiful over a desk or in a kitchen, but I imagine my kids would love it in their room as well. It’s actually a repositionable sticker in three different sizes, starting at just $19 for a 15″ x 10″.  Not only are the colors vibrant and inviting, but there’s something about seeing the land masses of this planet depicted without borders that represents the interconnectivity of our world beautifully....

Cool city map posters that beat hanging atlas pages on the wall

One of the biggest (and best) trends we’ve noticed over the last few years are the fun homages to your home state or favorite city. So these modern city map posters by Sarah Lund that we’re now carrying in our own Cool Mom Picks Indie Shop are a perfectly subtle way to go graphic without overwhelming your walls. With a springtime color palate–don’t you love these tomato reds and melon-y oranges and sage greens?–I could see them working anywhere in a house, from your kitchen to a home office or even a modern baby’s nursery. If you call either Chicago, NYC, San Francisco or Seattle home, they’re perfect. But...

Owls and mushrooms and hedgehogs, oh my!

If you’re looking to bring some happy new artwork to your child’s nursery, or think it would make an awesome baby gift for some other lucky child, I’ve discovered a wonderfully affordable option that I absolutely love, in Woodland Friends. This colorful book is filled with twenty beautifully sweet pull-out prints, all created by five talented illustrators and designers from the US and UK. In other words, twenty gifts under $20. Not bad, right? From the simple muted tones of Dawn Bishop’s work to the Michelle Romo’s bright, vibrant colors, I like that there is so much variety in these heavy cardstock prints. And, yet, since all...

Move over cutesie nursery art, plush taxidermy is taking over.

When papier-mâché animal heads began popping up on blogs a few years ago, I wasn’t completely sold on the trend of faux taxidermy as children’s decor. Sure, they were a million times less creepy than the real deal, but they didn’t seem playful enough for a kid’s bedroom. On the other hand, the plush taxidermy from Kelsey Davis Design are the perfect mix of wit and whimsy. If had a nursery to decorate, I’d place my order today.  All of the creatures she makes would be adorable over a crib or a dresser, but the crown-wearing lion and vintage-patterned pig are my two favorites. Related: Zoo portrait clocks that will have you laughing.   The wall mounts...

Handcrafted toy chests you’ll love to look at. Not just because they’re hiding all those toys.

It’s that time of year, so I was looking back at our post on colorful toy storage options, and came across the toy chests from Drift Studio. (Thanks, Christina!) So I clicked over to see what was new, and wow. As much as this Brooklyn mama loves the Brooklyn maps toy chest that we originally featured, I really dig the other toy chest designs from this Wisconsin based studio, too. From geometric patterns and graphic jungle animals to retro-toy designs like paper airplanes or jacks, there’s definitely something for any decor. Or hey, maybe it will inspire the decor theme to begin with.   Each chest is gorgeously handcrafted–with a...

Dream a little dream of dragons, bats, and narwhals.

Now you can put your baby to sleep with visions of fantasy dragons, hedgehogs, and even adorable bats (yes, they’re a thing) in her head. The handmade baby mobiles from Bee Janie Baby Mobiles feature all these creatures and more. You guys, they even have a mythical beasts mobile—you know, in case you have a Game of Thrones nursery in the works. Each mobile is handmade from felt, and most have somewhat unexpected creatures for a baby’s room. I mean, have you ever seen a mobile with bats before—the sleeping-in-caves kind, not the baseball kind? Me either, but I want one now. The...

The perfect kids’ chandelier, no lights required

Hanging a chandelier in your dining room or foyer can be gorgeous, of course. But hanging one in your kid’s bedroom or play room? Gorgeous–and totally unexpected. Especially when it’s a brightly colored acrylic kids’ chandelier from Nicole Ketchum, now in the Cool Mom Picks Indie Shop. Granted, these are just decorative chandeliers, so they don’t light up. But that’s even better, right? Since you don’t have to worry about wiring or outlets or fancy little bulbs, you can literally hang them anywhere. I like the idea of thinking outside the box (or house) and suspending a chandelier from a tree branch for an...

Lucy Darling: If you have a baby, we dare you not to be obsessed

I’m in love–with closet dividers. I know, it’s weird, but I am. I don’t derive much pleasure from organizing, but these Lucy Darling closet dividers actually make me want to organize my baby’s closet. They’re so, well, darling. Available in multiple designs, each as adorable as the next, Lucy Darling’s closet dividers are thick, luxe and come in sets of eight from newborn through 2T.  Perfect for baby boys or girls and certainly cute enough for a cool little baby shower gift. However my one piece of advice before you buy is to make sure there is enough clearance between the closet rod and...

What’s black and white and chic all over? Your baby’s future nursery, of course! If you’re looking for something other than the traditional blues, pinks and yellows, we’ve got you covered. Modern fairy tale art for girls who want to write their own endings.

If you check out the Cool Mom Picks indie shop at great.ly, you’ll find a whole category of cool kids’ room decor, and now we have a new artist we’re adding to the fold that I think is just wonderful. Rosy Designs is run by a Vancouver artist, creating what feels like modern fairy tale art in the style of modern children’s book illustrations. Her Sleeping Beauty print is made all that much more sweet with the addition of a unicorn (because, unicorns). It would only be more 2014 if it were Twilight Sparkle, but I give the unicorn points for longevity. However my favorite...

Gorgeous personalized nursery art prints, exclusively at the Cool Mom Picks indie boutique

We announced our new Cool Mom Picks Indie shop at Great.ly a few weeks ago, and I have to admit that I’m staying up way too late most nights looking through all of our stylish, useful, pretty, and some just plain fun items. The shop is getting better every day, especially now that we have partnered with some talented artists to offer exclusive items. Ooooh fancy, right? To kick off this exciting new shop feature: Personalized nursery art by artist Amy Lowry from Field Trip. Isn’t it gorgeous?   So we might be a little biased (or okay, a lot), but we think these would make such a special baby shower gift for...
