11 wonderful inspirational nursery prints that you might not think to buy for a baby’s room

I’m long past the days of decorating a baby’s room (sniff), but when you find inspirational nursery prints this wonderful and beautifully designed, it’s a wonder we ever used to settle for those ubiquitous licensed children’s characters or generic animals. After having looked at so many of these wonderful inspirational quote prints that weren’t necessarily designed as baby gifts — but happen to make great ones — I’ll be snagging some for my friends who are having babies. And maybe even a few for our own home that my elementary-aged kids will love. Because I figure if I’ve got any job as a mom, it’s...

No Sleep Til Brooklyn: The earworm of parents everywhere

If you had told me, way back when, that one of my favorite tracks off Licensed to Ill would end up being the anthem of new parenthood — and not of rockin’ this party eight days a week — I’d never have believed you. And yet there I was years later, cradling a non-sleeping newborn oh, about a zillion times, with the lyrics to No Sleep to Til Brooklyn running through my head on a loop. Whether you’re in the 718 like me or just a Beastie Boys fan, I think you’ll smile at the No Sleep Til Brooklyn art print at Brooklyn Makers.  Created...

Where to find the cutest French baby gifts and room decor without the $2000 plane ticket.

I always love finding and sharing European brands for kids that we don’t see so regularly around our parts, but mostly, they’re actually in Europe. That isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but you know, shipping. Well it turns out a French expat maman in LA was missing the beautiful things from her homeland too, and brought them here in one lovely little kids’ boutique called Tiny Frenchy. Warning: clicking over may tax your credit cards. The baby accessories, gear, and kids’ room decor only come from independent French designers, many of whom are moms themselves. In other words, think Cool French Mom...

Wonderful custom artwork for babies, kids, and kids at heart.

I still think that a great piece of personalized art can be one of the best baby shower gifts, provided you know the parents’ taste. And uh, the kid’s name. Of course. But I think this new discovery should fit the bill for lots of families and lots of styles. The new Jr. Alexander collection from Alexander & Co adds even more fantastic vintage advertising inspired custom wall art for kids and it’s hard to pick a favorite. Artist Alexander Doll has created options that are lovely for babies and young kids, and some that are even cool for older kids — or hey, dads....

The classic world map gets an arty twist

If you have a thing for maps and globes and geography in general, then you might love this as much as I do: a paintsplatter world map spotted at The Fancy. It would be so beautiful over a desk or in a kitchen, but I imagine my kids would love it in their room as well. It’s actually a repositionable sticker in three different sizes, starting at just $19 for a 15″ x 10″.  Not only are the colors vibrant and inviting, but there’s something about seeing the land masses of this planet depicted without borders that represents the interconnectivity of our world beautifully....

Cool city map posters that beat hanging atlas pages on the wall

One of the biggest (and best) trends we’ve noticed over the last few years are the fun homages to your home state or favorite city. So these modern city map posters by Sarah Lund that we’re now carrying in our own Cool Mom Picks Indie Shop are a perfectly subtle way to go graphic without overwhelming your walls. With a springtime color palate–don’t you love these tomato reds and melon-y oranges and sage greens?–I could see them working anywhere in a house, from your kitchen to a home office or even a modern baby’s nursery. If you call either Chicago, NYC, San Francisco or Seattle home, they’re perfect. But...

Owls and mushrooms and hedgehogs, oh my!

If you’re looking to bring some happy new artwork to your child’s nursery, or think it would make an awesome baby gift for some other lucky child, I’ve discovered a wonderfully affordable option that I absolutely love, in Woodland Friends. This colorful book is filled with twenty beautifully sweet pull-out prints, all created by five talented illustrators and designers from the US and UK. In other words, twenty gifts under $20. Not bad, right? From the simple muted tones of Dawn Bishop’s work to the Michelle Romo’s bright, vibrant colors, I like that there is so much variety in these heavy cardstock prints. And, yet, since all...

Move over cutesie nursery art, plush taxidermy is taking over.

When papier-mâché animal heads began popping up on blogs a few years ago, I wasn’t completely sold on the trend of faux taxidermy as children’s decor. Sure, they were a million times less creepy than the real deal, but they didn’t seem playful enough for a kid’s bedroom. On the other hand, the plush taxidermy from Kelsey Davis Design are the perfect mix of wit and whimsy. If had a nursery to decorate, I’d place my order today.  All of the creatures she makes would be adorable over a crib or a dresser, but the crown-wearing lion and vintage-patterned pig are my two favorites.
