10 completely over-the-top, absolutely gorgeous, seriously splurgy baby gifts for a lucky kid (that’s not ours)

One of the obvious—and awesome—perks of writing for Cool Mom Picks is that I get to scope out the newest, coolest products for moms. And sometimes, those products fall into the I-can-only-dream, outrageously chic, over-the-top gorgeous category. Then again, sometimes we get emails make us ask, are these for real? Here are ten seriously splurgy baby gifts I’ve seen lately, in no particular order. If you’re a 90201-er or $4500 for a crib doesn’t blow your mind, have fun. My wish list can be your shopping list.   1. Silver Cross Kensington Pram Stroller, $2,750 Feel like Kate Middleton when you stroll your baby around town; she has one...

What’s black and white and chic all over? Your baby’s future nursery, of course! If you’re looking for something other than the traditional blues, pinks and yellows, we’ve got you covered. If you’re into not-too-cutesy gender-neutral nursery offerings, the new line from the British design duo at Olli + Lime has pretty much everything you might need for a very coordinated black and white nursery. From crib bedding to pillows, blankets...

Wow, now that’s a bookshelf.

When are utilitarian storage units for kids the most stunning pieces of furniture in the whole room? When they are these gorgeously original Amsterdam Cabinets from This is Dutch. Modeled after Amsterdam’s iconic canal houses, these 78″ tall cabinets would be the centerpiece of any cool bedroom or playroom. They come in 11 different colors and three different gable designs on top so that you could theoretically have an entire cityscape filled with books. Dutch books maybe?. Of course I say theoretically because at almost $1,300 a pop, this is definitely not affordable design for most of our budgets, but we can dream, can’t...

HALO Bassinest Swivel Sleeper totally reinvents the bassinet

Waiting for someone to build a better bassinet? Well exciting news, expectant parents: HALO, creators of those cozy, fool-proof sleepsacks we love, is launching a bassinet called the HALO Bassinest Swivel Sleeper, and trust me when I say it’s a game-changer. (Get it? Bassinet + Nest? Bassinest.) Now I will say that when I had my first baby last summer, I was showered with tidbits of new mom advice, one of which was not to buy a bassinet no matter how adorable I thought one would be. I was told that a bassinet would take up too much room (a hot commodity where we lived), delay sleep-training,...

Looking for a great bed rail with night light built right in? We’ve found a great one.

My kids are rollers. I can’t count how many times I’ve gone to check on them while they sleep, only to find them on the floor. I’ve considered getting a bed rail but they think they’re so babyish. And when you’re a big four-year-old, is there a worse fate?  But then I discovered the new new Side Light bed rail from Babyhome which even my older kids think looks pretty cool. If you recognize the name Babyhome it’s because they’re the amazing modern children’s design company responsible for the modern So-Ro cradle that we’ve all been coveting for the babies in our...

We know it’s hard to imagine when you’re pregnant and every day seems like a year…but one day that baby will be a toddler, will be an actual kid with a say in their room decor. On behalf of our wonderful sponsor Pop & Lolli, makers of the imaginative, extremely well-made and eco-friendly fabric wall decals that we were excited to discover last...

DucDuc nursery furniture for Land of Nod: an investment that keeps paying off

I have always loved the beautiful lines of DucDuc nursery furniture which gives parents so many more modern options for their babies. And as a little local Brooklyn company, I’m really thrilled to see their exclusive new collection at Land of Nod.     DucDuc for Land of Nod isn’t a cheap kids’ furniture collection, but it sure is a great investment. In fact, the DucDuc Verona Crib converts to a toddler bed, and then a full-size bed which means you’ll get years and years of use out of it even without having to have six kids. That’s more than I can...

From Cradle to College

I love that furniture designers have stopped looking at cribs as a utilitarian object, and started embracing their artistic nature. GroFurniture is a stunning new eco-friendly furniture line, all made in the USA by real furniture artisans. It was started by a husband and wife who created these cribs for their own children. And now make them for everyone. Each crib is made to order and from what I can see, the assembly is easy. Of course, this all comes at a price. But fortunately, it’s meant to grow with your baby; you can purchase the bundle set which...

A cradle that will rock more than your baby

File this one under “Ever-Growing List of Gorgeous Things Celebrities Own That We Never Will.” It’s pretty much the most beautiful cradle I have ever seen. With the most extraordinary price tag. The So-Ro Cradle (“be calm” in Norweigan) is a stunning piece of furniture; walnut-covered baltic birch plywood, artfully crafted into a safe haven for babies that feels right at home with the Eames and the Noguchi. It rocks forward-to-back, not side-to-side which So-Ro creator Ane Lilian Tveit, a neurological expert, discovered soothes babies much better. And it’s evidently built with all kinds of safety in mind including a tilted mattress with various...

The baby travel crib that raises the bar for all other travel cribs

I finally get the baby travel crib thing. My first baby had a play yard which was great for storing all kinds of new baby gifts, diapers, blankets–you get the idea. We didn’t bring it out at all with my second child, giving it away soon after she was born. Then came number three. And that’s when I realized what I had been missing. The Baby Bjorn Travel Crib Light is the easiest-to-put-together piece of baby gear I have ever seen. Ever. It is the answer to my oh-my-goodness-I-need-to-put-this-baby-down-somewhere-safe-for-five-minutes so-he-won’t-eat-electrical-cords-while-I-cut-carrot-sticks-for-my-big-kids woes. The most helpful site for NYC mamas in search of… well, everything

I didn’t have kids yet when I lived in New York, but if I did–or should we ever happen to move back (could happen!)–I’d need some help getting it all together. A toddler bed to fit in a Manhattan apartment? Recommendations for a fabulous nanny? A gently-used city stroller for two? These are things for which you could turn to anonymous classified sites, but would you really want to when there’s a safer, more trustworthy alternative? Blueleo is a site filled with classifieds specifically for parents in the NYC vicinity, including Westchester, New Jersey, Long Island, and Fairfield. In...

3 insanely crazy high-end cribs. Prepare to gawk.

At the end of the day–and there really is an end of the day, when baby has no choice but to conk out, at least for a little while, anyway–all you really need is a good, sturdy crib so that your little one is safe and snug, right? Well, maybe not. For some parents, crib aesthetics figure prominently into the equation. Maybe basic is too boring? Maybe they’ve got a million dollars that they need to spend before midnight to win a Japanese reality show contest? In which case, these cribs really up the ante. At Nurseryworks, unique cribs...

ReCrib – Discount baby gear from brands that simply don’t discount

I’ve often said to new mom friends that if I had to do it over, I’d have spent less on the crib. Not that I didn’t adore our crib for the four years that we used it; but there has to be a better way than shelling out a fortune, even for those of us who have high-end tastes. Now, fortunately, there is an amazing option: a fabulous new website that’s like Craig’s List for high end baby gear. ReCrib is a place you can buy and sell only gently used, high end nursery furniture and toys. The site...

Too many Nook mattresses spoil the baby. In a good way.

Last year, Nook wowed me with the launch of their incredible (if expensive) Pebble crib mattress. Natural materials, no off-gassing, water and stain resistant and–bonus–it looked totally cool. Now they have a new mattress that even more mamas can afford. The Nook Pebble Lite offers the same conveniences and eco-friendliness in a package that lives up to its name–it weighs less and it costs less. Lite, get it? Now, there are some elements that differ from the original Pebble mattress, like the core is non-toxic foam, not latex. And the materials in the Lite mattress aren’t organic. But, really, the great features still exist...

Breaking News: IKEA Crib Recall

The CPSC issued a recall of IKEA SNIGLAR cribs in the US and Canada, because the four bolts that secure the mattress support may not be long enough. Check your crib and see if the mattress support bolts extend through the nut. If so, you’re fine. If not, the mattress can detach and collapse. No injuries have been reported so don’t panic. Just find the baby somewhere to sleep until you can get a repair kit–which probably consists of four longer bolts. Find full info at the CPSC website. If you need a repair kit for your IKEA Sniglar...

The glider chair has come a long way, baby

One of my most tedious nursery purchases nearly six years ago, was our glider. I went with that ubiquitous glider brand, whose styles were just…not me. It did the job of course, but it never made me happy to look at and it didn’t feel right when the nursery was no longer nursery. If you’re looking for a beautiful modern glider, and you’re willing to invest in something that will be part of your decor longer than that baby will be a baby, there are a few really beautiful options out there now.
