Because the best 2018 planners tend to start in August or September of 2017 in them to coincide with back-to-school busyness. Here are some of our favorites, from sassy to sweet. Make a date (heh!) to order one ASAP though, because your fall schedule is going to...

Is it really almost 2016? And time to look for a brand new 2016 planner? Whoa. Everything you need to know about Handmade at Amazon: Is it the Etsy competitor everyone says it is?

We started Cool Mom Picks shortly after Etsy launched, and we’ve been big fans ever since, discovering and happily sharing some of the coolest indie artisans and their handmade goods here on our site for nearly ten years now. So as huge supporters of the handmade movement and indie artist in general, it’s probably no surprise that our interest was piqued when Handmade at Amazon launched last week. So, we took a closer look to understand what it’s all about, and whether we think it’s something you’ll want to have on your radar, as a consumer, and for those...

The most fun your kids have ever had with a paper cup

Choosing the coolest party supplies for your birthday is a time-honored tradition at our house, and this year I’m pretty sure the winner will be these adorable color your own paper cups from the Oh Happy Day party shop. These coloring cups are like a fun craft, party favor, and of course, drinking cup, all rolled into one. And definitely more fun than scribbling kids’ initials with Sharpies to cut back on those half-finished cups of lemonade. Related: Oh Happy Day party store: everything you need, except the cake. I think the cups make the perfect activity for those first 15 slow minutes of a kid’s...

Passing notes, old school style

I’ve been known to blow it up with rapid-fire text messages, but I still adore handwritten letters sent by snail mail. I’m also a child of the 80’s who passed notes folded just like the ones pictured on these old school text note cards from laLa Grace on BRIKA. Kids, these are what text messages looked like in the olden days. Note proper spelling and apostrophe placement. Since they’re blank inside, I could use these notes for just about any reason, but I think it would be clever to write a note to my child’s teacher on one of these cards, since back in the day...

Like shopping for new school supplies in the fall, I absolutely love getting a beautiful new calendar each January. It’s a blank slate spread out before me for the coming year, with so much opportunity. While I’ll definitely buy a printed calendar with space to fill in family activities, I also spent time weeding through all those ho-hum printable calendar templates out there, and tracking down some of the best printable 2015 calendars. I love each of these cool calendars so much, I just may have one in my kitchen, in the office,  on my bedside table…can you tell I’m obsessed?   Sometimes I need a good pep talk to conquer...

Is it overkill to hang a different calendar in every room of your house? Because there are so many gorgeous 2015 calendars that I’m struggling to choose just one. Here are 11 of the coolest calendars for next year, ranging from wall calendars to desk calendars to calendars you can use as gift wrap. I say let’s just give ourselves permission to buy as many as we’d like and simply call them pieces of art. They’re all so pretty! Above is Kristina Krogh Studio’s 2015 wall calendar, which combines two of my favorite design elements: black typography and gold foil. Simple yet stunning, it would look...

Pretty paper plates and cups that feed America’s hungry families

I’m pretty sure I’m not the only mom who races to my kids’ school party volunteer signups to be sure I can claim “plates and forks.” Honestly, the holidays are busy enough without having to bake eight dozen cookies. (And bless you parents who do sign up for cookie duty!) Whether it’s for the classroom or my own parties and holiday entertaining, I still prefer something more festive than boring white paper plates, so I was excited to discover the new line of modern paper plates and other dinnerware items from Cheeky Home. Cheeky launched just last week with these bright, cheerful designs exclusively at Target. But in case the...

Making your holiday card list: 21 people to be sure not to forget

As much as we’d like to say we always remember to send holiday cards to everyone we know and love, well, that’s a bit of a stretch. Mostly because we’re all swamped with holiday shopping and to-do lists and teacher gifts, and and and… so, we get it. Besides, who actually has every friend’s actual home address in a physical address book anymore? So, yes, sometimes people fall through the cracks. (Sorry!) But we’re trying to do better. Because if you’re like us, the holidays can be the one time of the year you have the chance to touch base with people in your life...

DIY with the Makr app: Getting crafty in an app-happy world

We love finding gorgeous designs from indie artists, but sometimes what you really need is a way to make your very own custom design–preferably without hiring an artist or earning a degree in graphic design. The new Makr app for iOS helps you do exactly that, and it’s fast, easy, and a lot of fun, even if you’re not artistically inclined. Interestingly, the same free Makr app is different whether you’re using iPad or iPhone, including how it looks and what you can do with it. I’ll cover both here, but keep that quirk in mind when you download it. (Because...

The DIY teeny tiny letter writing kit that’s filled with great big awesomeness

Letter writing isn’t a hobby I would have imagined my almost-seven-year-old daughter would become obsessed with, especially with our love for Rainbow Loom still strong. The Tiny Mail Activity Kit from Leafcutter Designs has caught on fast, though, and turned her and her friends into letter-writing maniacs. Five years ago, we discovered the company that has offered the clever World’s Smallest Post to send tiny cards, letters and packages through US mail on behalf of …oh, say, the Easter Bunny or the Tooth Fairy. Now they’ve launched a DIY letter-writing kit, and we’re hooked.   When my daughter first opened one up,...

We’ve had babies on the brain around here lately for some reason. Maybe it has a little something to do with spring coming–and how soon we’ll be seeing more of those cute little baby toes peeking out from their stroller blankets. So we had the best time checking out all the new Minted birth announcements, cards, artwork and baby gifts, seeing as how they’re one of our favorite stationers–and one of our favorite longtime sponsors. (Thanks, Minted!) It’s always so fun to see what designs their independent artists from around the world are coming up with next.  And the best part...

Cool baby shower invitations for parents not so into the traditional ones.

Cool baby shower invitations aren’t always easy so come by, what with showers tending to overflow with oohing and aahing and sweetness pink and blue everything. Nothing wrong with that at all. But if your parenting style is a bit more wry, I’ve put together some of my favorite cool baby shower invitations that make me smile for reasons more than “a baby’s coming!” Trust me, you’ll need to keep that sense of humor once that little guy or gal is here . If you’re still in shock over the news of your impending arrival–or you’re known for spending way too much...

Olive Box monthly subscription boxes: no olives, but still pretty cool.

Recently we featured 10 of our favorite subscription box gift boxes, and as the market gets increasingly saturated, we have to work harder at paring down the good ones for you. I’ve long admired this local NYC shop, which is so beautifully curated with lovely cards, gifts, and announcements, and they’ve just added an Olive Box card box subscription. -Don’t miss a limited time discount for Cool...
