Back-to-school shopping with tweens and teens is like a whooole new thing. They have pretty strong opinions about what they love and don’t love. Even more than preschoolers, if you can believe that. (Though at least they don’t insist on wearing their swimsuit and flip-flops to school in the winter, ha.) So we had a great time putting together this third back-to-school shopping miniguide on behalf of our partner JCPenney, to help you fin tons of cool stuff for your older kids. And it’s all so affordable. Yes! From backpacks and school gear to clothing essentials and those fun...Read More

There’s a lot of chatter going around that things just haven’t been right with the world since Prince and David Bowie left it. I’m kind of in agreement. So I’m all for bringing them back in any way possible — like this totally rad “Carry Me Home” Bowie and Prince enamel tribute pin by designer Ice Cream Color for the shop Laser Kitten. I’d say it deserves a home on as many lapels, handbags, and cool-teen/tween backpacks as possible. If you happen to have a cool grand or more to spend on a very special, one-of-a-kind gift for a rock fan in your life who you love a lot, we’ve just discovered maybe the coolest ever gift that will connect them to some of the biggest rock icons of our time. And also to help them keep get to places on time; something musicians are not always known for. The brand new Nixon Rock LTD Watch Collection, goes on sale in mid-November, and fuses music and fashion in such an amazingly cool way; they’re taking donated leather from some of the some major rock legends’ personal items and...Read More
With spring break in the rearview mirror, our kids are already looking forward to heading off to camp. So we thought it would be fun to explore the coolest summer camps out there. We were blown away by what we found — from camps with long histories and cool new programs, to camps with activities that we had no idea you could even do at camp! It’s sure come a long way since we were kids and your choices were pretty much limited to art, music, or sports. Now we just wish we were young again, so we could...Read More
If you’ve ever dreamed of having your own David Bowie to snuggle, we’ve got good news: These pop culture dolls by French artisan My Name is Simone are just as much for you as they are for kids. Whether you’re into Ziggy Stardust, the King of Pop, or a certain fabulous fashion designer named Karl, they’re all based on her favorite style icons who will look equally as posh on the couch or on a shelf in a mod nursery. While the dog collars of the 80’s aren’t quite back (yet) we’ve been eyeing the new array of spiked jewelry and loving it. It’s an easy way to bring a little rock-and-roll to even the most basic outfit–just so long as you don’t overdo it. It’s an accent piece, not a costume. Here, 9 of my favorite spiky baubles that you mayyyyy even see gracing the necks and earlobes of our own staff these days. –Liz Leather and Linen Necklace ($64, Poketo)Scared of accidentally stabbing the baby? My oldest daughter is about to enter sixth grade and if statistics are correct, her current love of science will likely wane as society subtly spreads the message that science and engineering studies are “not for girls.” But, I’m going to do everything I can to help change that perception with loads of science kits and talk about everyone from Marie Curie to Sally Ride. And we’ll be playing a lot of a new CD whose mission is to empower girls to explore science and engineering fields their entire lives. Bill Childs of Spare the Rock, Spoil the Child and...Read More
This post is brought to you by our sponsor, Up All Night, the new NBC show starring some of the coolest and funniest parents on TV like Christina Applegate, Will Arnett, and Maya Rudolph. When I was pregnant with my first daughter almost 8 years ago, I remember being completely underwhelmed by the sea of cutesy animal patterns and pastel baby decor, neither of which were anywhere near my personal style. But these days, you don’t have to sacrifice your taste because you had a baby. Here’s some of the coolest rock n’ roll baby gear around, that will...Read More
As my oldest daughter starts to get more into fairies and princesses and all things pink (God help me), I’m still trying to keep her just a wee bit rock ‘n roll. So I love the looks of this handmade guitar lap tee that feels both girlie and rocking all at once. I think the multiple textures in the applique is a great touch, and my only complaint is that the shirt doesn’t come in bigger sizes. But if you’ve got a rock star in training who’s 3-18 months, you’re in luck. Earplugs not included. –LizFind the guitar lap...Read More
