Should you really avoid SPF over 50? We’ve got facts, and we’ve got answers.

Growing up as a fair-skinned, redheaded kid, I’m no stranger to the intricacies of SPF labels. Or sunburns. Like lots of us, I always believed that the higher the SPF, the better the sun protection I’d get, but that’s not necessarily the case. In fact, the EWG warns against sunscreens with very high SPF over 50, and that goes for kids and adults. In fact, they say flat out to avoid SPF over 50. But, why? 2017 EWG best safe sunscreens for kids and babies: Which is the most affordable?

Every year, I take a look at the Environmental Working Group’s report on the best safe sunscreens for kids and babies. This list measures popular brands against the EWG’s standards, including everything from worrisome ingredients to false marketing claims. Not every top-ranked tube of lotion is the same value for the dollar, though, so I’ve broken down all 19 of their best safe sunscreens for kids by price per ounce. Because I’ll bet there are other parents like me, who want safe products for their kids but don’t feel the need to spend more money than necessary. A simple skincare regimen for busy moms, and 5 things I learned after sticking to it for 10 days

I’m pretty sure I can’t be the only mom who barely has enough energy to wash her face at night and slap some moisturizer on, since I’m so darn tired I just want to brush my teeth and hit the sack. Yes, the 30 seconds it would take me always seems like 30 seconds too long. Let alone the time I can spend in the mornings. Yeah, nope. So as you can imagine, the idea of sticking to an actual skincare regimen twice a day for 10 days — like, not just washing but using actual serums and ointments — seems pretty unlikely to me. But when our...

Clarisonic Mia 2 Skin Cleansing System review: Is it really worth the price? An honest look.

As the new year loomed over me, I got an early start on my resolution to rid myself of dry, dead skin, and take better care of my face. I tested out quite a few skincare devices over the course of one month that had been sent to me for review consideration — from ultrasonic infusers to battery-powered cleansing brushes — to see if they would make a difference. At the end of the month, only one product actually made the cut: Clarisonic Mia 2 Skin Cleansing System. If you’re not familiar with this bestselling product, I wanted to review it to see...

A quick, natural skincare routine for tweens and teens from an expert

When it comes to tween and teen skin, and figuring out the skincare routine that will work best for them, I like to take the less is more approach — at least until action is really needed. When I was younger, I had great skin until I started trying out all sorts of different products on them. Then I went back to using natural skincare solutions, and thankfully it calmed my skin down again. So if you’ve got a tween or teen with normal skin and no serious skin problems — which might require a visit to a dermatologist or your...

12 unique tattoo ideas for parents, beyond your kid’s name on your back.

I loved tattoos ever since I got my first one back in college (sorry, mom), but after having kids, I was all about searching for unique tattoo ideas for parents. For me, it was about honoring the journey of becoming a mom, as well as keeping a little part of my kids with me as I know that all too soon they’ll be grown up and not up my arm pit every five seconds. Ha. Turns out, I’m not the only one with unique tattoos that celebrate parenthood. I hit up a bunch of my friends — online and offline — who...

The best drugstore makeup for tweens and teens: Top picks from a pro

Now that some of our girls are starting to hit the age where they’re asking about more than just a little flavored lip balm, we turned to an expert to offer us advice about makeup for tweens and teens. Because things have come a long way since we were all first experimenting with navy mascara and body shimmer as young women ourselves. We’re so pleased to welcome our new beauty columnist Kristyn Rudnet of Shimmer and Spice, who’s a talented east coast makeup artist (we’ve been lucky enough to use her ourselves!), style director, and skin guru who has...

Our favorite summer sun hats for people who don’t think they can pull off sun hats. Because, you can.

I love that this year skin is…well, out. Or at least, it’s a little more covered up, as we can see from the trends toward more stylized rash guards, high-waisted swim bottoms, and sexy one-pieces instead of bikinis. And let’s not forget about our faces; I know mine is the first place to freckle if I stay out in the sun too long. And while sunscreen helps, it’s tough to remember to reapply as often as I need to to keep from getting flushed then burned by summer’s strong rays. So I’ve been thinking a lot about summer sun hats. And once I started...

The EWG 2016 safest sunscreens for kids: which are most affordable?

Every year, we have turned to the Environmental Working Group’s Annual Guide to Sunscreens to help us make more educated decisions about what are the safest sunscreens to slather on our kids (and ourselves) each summer. But we often find that when you break down the prices, whoa — it’s expensive to get safe sunscreens for kids! Especially considering how much we’re using. So this year we thought we’d take a good look at their short list of the EWG Best Kids’ Sunscreens, find the average prices online (generally from Amazon, Drugstore.com, or the brand’s own website if the product isn’t widely available at...

7 favorite beauty product splurges that are absolutely worthwhile.

Okay so let’s start with a disclaimer: When I describe beauty products I can’t live without, I’m being a bit hyperbolic. Do they fall under food? No. Clothing? No. Shelter? No, unless we’re talking sunscreen should I ever be stranded on a tropical island. So of course I could live without these beauty products. However do I prefer having them in my life rather than alternatives? Heck yeah. I have tried a whole lot of beauty products over the course of my life — trials (and mistakes) from department store beauty counters, gifts in goodie bags, hand-me downs from friends who somehow had extras,...

I know it’s hard to weed through all the info; I’m sure you’ve read all sorts of things about what to do, what not to do, which of those lotions and potions in your medicine cabinet to use, and how to differentiate a minor skin issue from something that might require more attention If you’re like me, by the time you figure out what you’re...

The EWG list of the safest sunscreens for kids. Just in time for summer

Each year, I check out the Environmental Working Group’s Guide to Sunscreens to find the safest sunscreens for kids. With a slew of fair-skinned redheads in my family, I feel like I go through gallons of sunscreen each summer, and while I’m not all-organic-all-the-time, I do tend to splurge on lotions that are safer for my kids and lower in chemicals since we use so much of them all season. Related: What is the safest sunscreen for kids and babies? An all-natural skin care line that’s seriously awesome. Even if the name is silly.

I’ll admit that I was skeptical at first of a company with a nonsensical name like Meow Meow Tweet natural skin care products, but I’ve been quickly won over by their hand-crafted products. The small-batch skin care company makes everything in Brooklyn using only organic ingredients, like raw plant oils and cold-pressed essential oils, and all of their products are preservative-free, vegan, and certified cruelty-free. And the packaging! I’m a sucker for lotions and potions in glass bottles. Besides being better for the environment than plastic, they just look so fancy on my bathroom counter — if out of reach of the kiddos, of...

Delilah cosmetics: The new makeup line I will cry over when it runs out.

I like trying new makeup, but I’m also ridiculously picky. I tend to have a cosmetics bag full of lots of different brands because one makes a good mascara, another makes the perfect smudgy liner. You get it. However Delilah Cosmetics, a new high-end line of luxury cosmetics out of Britain that just hit our own shores, may be the first brand that seems to get everything right. I mean, everything. I can’t believe it myself, but I think I’ve fallen seriously in love with every single sample I tried. Just ask every female relative, cosmetics junkie, and makeup artist I have talked to about it...
