What no one tells you about becoming a parent is the total and complete lack of sleep you’ll suffer. Sure, we all know it’s rough when they’re new babies. But, spoiler alert: It lasts way beyond the infant years. We know moms who can’t fall asleep because they’re worrying about their massive to-do lists, moms who can’t stay asleep because their hormones are totally whack post-baby, and moms who get woken up all hours of the night by their kids. And hey, dads aren’t immune from this either. While we can’t come by your house and force your child...Read More
If your kid is going to sleepaway camp this summer — especially if it’s for the first time — your family is probably dealing with a lot of organizational kerfuffles right about now. Not the least of which is packing. Even though your camp will send its own checklist of “what to bring” and “what not to,” you’re still going to have plenty of questions. So we rounded up some sleepaway camp packing tips to help make it all much easier. That way, there’s less time to worry, and more time for what really matters: Lots of pre-camp hugs....Read More
Oh, bedtime. Why do you have to be so difficult for so many parents? From infant swaddlers to resources for big kid sleep anxiety, parents with kids of all ages will always crave solutions to make bedtime safer and easier. While my baby is still a few years away from making his way into his own bed, I know I’m going to jump all over these clever Cosie Covers bed rail covers when we hit the toddler bed with bed rail milestone. So smart! Related: Baby registry essentials that help kids (and parents!) get more sleep Designed by mom Cori Sinclair, the...Read More
I have a couple of kids with on-and-off sleep issues, so I’ve been paying attention to the swell of discussion about the benefits of weighted blankets for children. These blankets, which are generally filled with anywhere from 5–10 lbs. of weighted beads, are said to help increase both serotonin (which improves your mood) and melatonin (which makes you sleepy). Basically, your kids feel like they’re being held, which of course makes them happy. And sleepy. Yay! We recently received a sample weighted blanket from The Magic Blanket for my kids to try out, and after using it for a week or so their bedtime routines were much less...Read More
On this week’s episode of the Spawned podcast, we are excited to welcome Dr. Harvey Karp, of Happiest Baby on the Block fame, though he virtually needs no introduction. We’re so excited he joined us to answer some of parents most difficult questions about sleep, whether they’ve got newborns or, uh…tweens. We appreciate his common sense, non-judgmental approach to sleep, not to mention some of the tips that saved our own lives when we were new parents. (If you know his genius 5 S’s, you know just what we mean.) Listen now! And don’t forget to subscribe to Spawned with Kristen...Read More
In honor of SIDS Awareness Month, we’re sharing five of our go-to, reliable resources on safe sleep for babies. After all, sleep is easily the topic that consumes our minds as new parents more than any other — Are they getting enough sleep? Do I really need a schedule? Is my crib okay? Is my mattress okay? Are bumpers actually unsafe? Can they sleep with me? What happens if the baby rolls over onto her stomach? We get it. It’s stressful! So we really hope these resources help new parents get the info and the reassurances we all need, so we can hopefully rest just...Read More
I still remember celebrating when I was finally out of the baby and toddler no-sleep days, only to discover that I had a big kid with sleep anxiety. Once I realized the incentive of Star Wars Legos wasn’t keeping him in his bed through the night, I knew it was a bigger problem than a normal behavioral issue. My son, now 9, has quite an overactive brain, which makes it terribly hard for him to fall asleep. And then, if he wakes up in the middle of the night, he can’t fall back asleep unless he’s with me. In my bed. Over...Read More

Certain words are especially delightful to parents of babies and young children: Mama. Dada. Go take a nap honey, I’ll clean up. Are you with me? Once you’ve had kids, few things are as precious and elusive as sleep. Oh, sweet sweet sleep. That’s why I love the idea of these personalized sleep masks from The Sleepy Cottage on Etsy for an affordable, very thoughtful Mother’s Day gift. Our editor Liz has ordered a bunch herself over the holidays, and she swears by the craftsmanship and great service from Texas maker Sabrina Evans. The Star Wars bed for kids that would make you you the intergalactic queen of the world on #ForceFriday
Star Wars fans everywhere (and pretty much the rest of us) know that today is #ForceFriday –the day a whole bunch of new Star Wars gifts and toys goes on sale to help build excitement for the December release of Episode VII The Force Awakens. Also known as The One Where Luke, Leia, and Han are Old. But, you know, not everything new is better. So I have my eye on this super cool new gift that harkens back to the original Star Wars movie that we parents grew up watching. You know, the one when everyone was young. When I finally figured out how to get my babies in a good, tight swaddle, it changed my life. My night life, at least, because mama finally got to sleep. So I mean it when I say a good swaddling blanket makes all the difference in the world, because no matter how well you swaddle your baby, if it comes undone 30 minutes later it’s useless. That’s why I’ve been a fan of Aden + Anais since the day they first hit shelves. But now that I’ve seen their new Pure Merino Muslin collection of luxury swaddling blankets, I’m almost looking forward to...Read More
Waiting for someone to build a better bassinet? Well exciting news, expectant parents: HALO, creators of those cozy, fool-proof sleepsacks we love, is launching a bassinet called the HALO Bassinest Swivel Sleeper, and trust me when I say it’s a game-changer. (Get it? Bassinet + Nest? Bassinest.) Now I will say that when I had my first baby last summer, I was showered with tidbits of new mom advice, one of which was not to buy a bassinet no matter how adorable I thought one would be. I was told that a bassinet would take up too much room (a hot commodity where we lived), delay sleep-training,...Read More
I’ve learned that when kids are afraid of the dark, a nightlight can be their best friend. And have you ever seen a friendlier, cuter lamp than this Little Cloud Lamp? This adorable night light might be just what I need to get my scared-of-the-dark, light sleeper daughter to quit waking me up at 2 AM. Every. Single. Night. The Little Cloud Lamp was designed by an art duo out of NYC called FriendsWithUs, who have worked with Pharrell, and I think this piece has the same infectious happy vibe as his hit song. Even though it’s adorable and perfect for kids, it...Read More
I have the hardest time getting my night owl daughter up for school in the mornings. She likes to come visit us most nights around 2 AM, so when morning comes around she’s too tired to get up and dressed for kindergarten. The trick that’s working for me—for this week, at least—is Pop-Clock, a super-fun alarm clock for kids. You might be familiar with the Clocky alarm clock for older kids, and now Pop-Clock is made just for younger ones just learning to get out of bed by themselves. When the alarm goes off, the creature’s head goes flying across the room...Read More
Need some new lullaby music for babies or kids? Try Lullabies by Laurie Berkner. Our kids are snoring, and it’s music to our ears.
If you are looking for lullaby music for babies–or even for bigger kids–I am the person to ask. The routine to get my kids down has never been so easy, and so like most parents in the world, I sing. And sing. And sing. If you’re looking for new lullaby music, lately we’ve been singing along to Lullabies by Laurie Berkner in our home and it is definitely doing the trick. Here’s how good Lullabies is: we put it on in the car during our morning commute to school, with my kids hyped up on syrup and OJ (sorry, teachers.)...Read More
It’s Friday again, which means it’s time for our roundup of the best-of-the-best that we found on the Internet this week. We hope you like them too. How to make rainbow bubbles to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day. We’re misty eyed at our editor Liz’s post about a mother who didn’t want her son playing with dolls. Britax’s policy on showing no celebrity kids in unauthorized photos. Here’s to hoping more companies will follow their lead. For years now, Oeuf has been known for its beautiful, modern nursery furniture that’s meant to last. I’m personally a huge fan of their Perch Bunk Bed (visit us sometime and see it in action) still could use the Oeuf Toy Store to wrangle the 8 zillion little toy pieces we have all over the place. Now, they have a brand new crib that is simply awesome. And not a zillion dollars either. While the new Oeuf Elephant Crib is not an IKEA $199 special, it’s not a mortgage payment either. Especially because the key aspect of the design...Read More
I love that furniture designers have stopped looking at cribs as a utilitarian object, and started embracing their artistic nature. GroFurniture is a stunning new eco-friendly furniture line, all made in the USA by real furniture artisans. It was started by a husband and wife who created these cribs for their own children. And now make them for everyone. Each crib is made to order and from what I can see, the assembly is easy. Of course, this all comes at a price. But fortunately, it’s meant to grow with your baby; you can purchase the bundle set which...Read More
Toddler beds are really glorious things. They ease the transition from the warm and cozy crib of yore, and the big bad bed of the future. And they’re awesome for small spaces. The problem is that these little beds can come with a big price tag, and since they are only used for a finite period of time, it can be hard to justify. Fear not, moms and dads of toddlers–we’ve got a new option just for you. The new P’Kolino Cafe Con Leche toddler bed is everything you could possibly ask for, and so much more. It’s got...Read More
At the end of the day–and there really is an end of the day, when baby has no choice but to conk out, at least for a little while, anyway–all you really need is a good, sturdy crib so that your little one is safe and snug, right? Well, maybe not. For some parents, crib aesthetics figure prominently into the equation. Maybe basic is too boring? Maybe they’ve got a million dollars that they need to spend before midnight to win a Japanese reality show contest? In which case, these cribs really up the ante. At Nurseryworks, unique cribs...Read More
