Simple tips for moving with kids: How to make it easier, from a mom who’s done it. A lot. Alone.

Over the last three years, I’ve moved alone with my four kids twice — once long distance, once pretty much right around the corner — and hey, I survived. And so did my kids. All of us with our sanity intact. Well, mostly. Of course, there were plenty of challenges, but there were a few simple tricks I picked up along the way to make the whole process a lot easier. It’s too bad that at the time, I didn’t know about our newest sponsor CableMover, a free, customizable online resource that can help save you time, money, and some of the hassles that tend...

Getting your kids to practice their handwriting: 16 fun tips, tricks and ideas

Call us the handwriting brigade. Seriously. From day one, even with the advent of technology and the slow decline of handwriting instruction (let alone cursive, gah!) in schools, we’ve always made it our mission to encourage kids not to lose the art of handwriting. And if it’s not asking too much, we’d like it to be as legible as possible, considering we all know at least one relative, co-worker, friend or yes, doctor,  whose handwriting is like some secret code requiring a decipher key. After a season of writing actual letters to our kids at sleepaway camp — and receiving them — it really...

Break out the new crayons for this awesome coloring book from indie illustrator Laura Palmer

Who doesn’t need more coloring books in their lives? Well, okay, if you look in my kids’ craft drawer, maybe we don’t. But, we do need awesome ones. The cheap, thin, licensed ones can get tossed and we’ll replace them with cool, creative coloring books that the whole family can sit around the table and color while we eat our snacks after school. Because, don’t you have the best conversations while you’re sitting around the table coloring? Right now we’re loving this cool little tablet of doodles that your kids can tear off and color in. It’s created by the fun...

Great savings on some of the coolest back-to-school shopping

When we were growing up, the best part about back-to-school season was always shopping for school supplies. In fact, our friends at Minted are back as a sponsor (yay Minted!), and they’ve gotten into the back to school shopping game, too. You thought Minted was just stationery? Free printable kids stationery. Since you’re already spending enough on camp as it is.

I’m all for splurging a bit on special camp stationery as my kids head off later this week (sniff), especially since it seems to compel them to use it more. But after about 25 cards or so — wishful thinking, I know — the costs add up.  So I like the idea of supplementing with either an affordable stationery pad, or making my own with some free printable stationery for kids. I just spotted these cute templates at Kiki + Co, featuring fun mermaids and not-too-scary sharks; and if you click over to The 36th Avenue, you’ll find some of her more generic free printable stationery designs featuring pretty...

Some of our favorite camp stationery for kids: Here’s hoping they write to us.

When I was a kid at summer camp, mail time was always one of the best parts of my days. And I’d imagine now, a time when hardly any of us get actual personal snail mail at all, camp mail is an even more exciting ritual. So we’ve got some cool ideas to help arm your campers with some awesome camp stationery for kids, so they can write you about everything they’re enjoying — and everything they’re missing from home). Because the only thing better than letters from home while you’re at camp, are letters from camp when you’re the parent back home....

Passing notes, old school style

I’ve been known to blow it up with rapid-fire text messages, but I still adore handwritten letters sent by snail mail. I’m also a child of the 80’s who passed notes folded just like the ones pictured on these old school text note cards from laLa Grace on BRIKA. Kids, these are what text messages looked like in the olden days. Note proper spelling and apostrophe placement. Since they’re blank inside, I could use these notes for just about any reason, but I think it would be clever to write a note to my child’s teacher on one of these cards, since back in the day...
