Clever personalized plates that let kids play with their food the fashionable way.

Parents of picky eaters, rejoice! The solution to your dinnertime drama might be as simple as a personalized plate… and a cookie cutter. Little Me personalized plates and dress-up cutters for kids are designed to inspire creativity with food, but I’ve found them to be extremely helpful in getting my son to simply eat his dinner. Turns out chicken nuggets are infinitely more exciting when served next to an illustration resembling your child, and that my son’s spinach cakes actually get eaten when they’re cut into the shape of pants and a shirt. Well, mostly. We still haven’t had a dinner that doesn’t end with me begging...

The Happy Mat that saved mealtimes

My toddler seeks out new ways daily to make mealtimes all stress and all mess. Food on the floor, “non-slip” mat thrown in the air, liquids everywhere–you name it, he’s done it. It’s more than the OCD in me can handle some days–okay, most days–and it raises the question: do happy mealtimes really exist? Well, I have good news, my fellow neat freaks. It’s called the Happy Mat, made by a company called ezpz. (Get it? Easy-Peasy?) Created by Lindsey Laurain, a mom of three young boys who I know understands messy mealtimes, the sturdy, high quality silicone mat truly suctions to...

Dapple natural baby cleaning products: No surface left unclean

Having a baby has been a joy, a wonder, a delight–all that warm and fuzzy stuff. But I have a confession to make: It has also made me a germaphobe. I’ve never been a neat freak, but lately, I’ve morphed into a little bit of an obsessive Purell-carrying, baby wipe-wielder. I’m not sure how I feel about that (control issues, who me?) but Dapple‘s fantastic line of natural baby cleaning products is my current enabler. Much like their tried and true favorites, including the fragrance-free pacifier wipes we already love, I’m so happy to see that the mom-run Dapple is out with new...

Raise your hand if you’d like your kid’s food to stay on the plate, not on the floor.

Meal time with a toddler can feel like a special kind of hell. Aside from picky eating, the real frustrations for me came in when my little eaters managed to throw what seemed like all of their food on the floor. If you’re the type of parent who spends countless hours pureeing your own organic yams, then food waste is especially irritating. Then again…it’s especially irritating for those of us who put a few Cheerios on a plate and call it a snack. Let’s just agree that extra clean-up stinks no matter what. Enter Adi, the brand new Stay Put Plate that I am so...

Learning dishes for kids and other educational tableware that sneak some brain food in with the vegetables

Mealtime is the one time my busy kids sit still for a little while, so I love that smart people are creating such interesting learning dishes for kids, educational placemats, and other housewares that let kids do more than doodle at the table. Or uh, play Candy Crush. Whether or not your kids will actually review math facts or practice cursive over the mashed potatoes, they’re likely to absorb some of the information presented in front of them, which I think is kind of neat. ALPHABET PLACEMATS For little ones, Brinware’s brightly colored, easy-to-clean silicone alphabet placemats (above) make for a...

Kids’ dishes that are pretty enough for the grownup table.

Here’s one of my secrets for keeping the kids well-behaved at mealtime: Avoid kids’ dishes that look like they’re kids’ dishes. Don’t laugh. I’ve found that when  kids eat off of plates with cartoons on them, it seems to set the scene for them to act, well, like kids. When I treat my kids like they’re mature, responsible little people, they tend to act that way. Crazy, I know.  The makers of the Bambino dishware from Ekobo get that parents don’t necessarily want kids’ stuff to scream kids’ stuff. Their dishes are simple, modern, and gorgeous. I love each of the six...

Chomp Stix chopsticks for kids. Don’t be surprised if your children take a sudden interest in sushi.

It’s been a while since we found a cool pair of kids’ chopsticks to feature around here, so I’m excited to have discovered Chomp Stix. Especially considering I have children who ask to eat our local sushi restaurant–despite eating like two things on the menu–simply to use the “kid chopsticks” the owner makes them with a rubber band and chopstick wrapper. The Chomp Stix does it one better, with three brightly colored, adorable designs, each durable and dishwasher safe. Look closely and you realize they take the shape of a shark with lots of teeth (for the youngest kids...

What’s the best sippy cup? We may have just found it.

The sippy cup. Ah, how I wish we were past this stage of life. For now I accept my fate that is the avalanche of cups and lids falling on my head every time I open the cabinet. My disdain however only makes me more appreciative of those times I find a sippy cup that is easy to manage and stands up to the elements- and by elements I mean aggressive toddler. We love pretty much everything that inventive company Zo-li does, which is why they’re a mainstay in our Baby Shower Gift Guide, and this new entry is...

Pura Kiki bottles let you ditch plastic sippy cups for stainless steel

I admit that I was pretty skeptical of the stainless steel baby bottle trend, and never could actually make the leap. But now that my baby is of sippy cup age, I am pretty intrigued by the idea of stainless steel sippy cups. The Pura Kiki stainless steel toddler bottle has become a fixture in the hands of my 17-month old, pretty much converting me from the slew of plastic sippy cups that are stuffed in my kitchen drawers. They just wear so well compared to the plastic that looks beaten up pretty quickly, and I love how easy they are to wash....

One thing we parents all have in common is the need to feed our kids. Here, our favorite foods, snacks, tableware, cookbooks, all to help make mealtimes a little easier and a little more fun. Green Toys dishes Kristen: I have a huge thing for Green Toys as toys, but wow, their new dishes and tumblers have been a welcome addition to our kitchen. Sturdy, safer than melamine, and eco-friendly too–I’m not quite sure you can get better than that. SIli Squeeze fruit puree dispenser Kristen: For as many squeezy-whatevers we go through a week, I’m soooo thrilled to...

Dishes for kids that are safer than plastic – they only look like plastic

It’s hard trying to sort through all the plastic safety issues these days when it comes to feeding our kids. Between BPA, pthalates, melamine fears and microwave warnings, sometimes I just want to throw up my hands in frustration; does everything have to come with a warning these days? Well, not everything. In fact, I’m so thrilled that we get to be the first to announce the launch of a brand new, totally safe set of kids dishes, all made from a really surprising material. Building a better sippy cup

I don’t remember having trouble learning how to use a straw but, then again, I’m about four decades past that stage in life. It was my kids who made me realize that “straw use” was going to be another one of those odd little skills I was going to have to teach them, along with using a napkin instead of their shirt. For those of you just entering this stage of development, check out this neat cup which helps make the transition from sippy cup to straw-in-cup even easier. The new Lollacup infant/toddler cup features a flexible weighted straw...

Sipidee doo dah

I just saw the cutest ever sippy cups–so cute in fact that despite the fact that my girls are (thankfully!) almost past the sippy cup stage, I immediately thought about whether I could justify owning them. The sippy cups from SugarBooger (I know, ignore the name) are minis–just 6 oz–making them great to grab on the go. The designs are just fabulous, from the pretty butterfly design seen here, to the sleek vintage alphabet, and the funky Day of the Dead motif. But what I really love is that they work just fine without that BPA-free sippy lid too,...

Look ma, there’s a monkey in my food!

My son is the proud owner of a Skip Hop Zoo Backpack (a froggie, in case you were wondering), so when I found out they were making a line of tableware to match, I got excited about the idea of luring my son to dinner with something besides bribery. Skip Hop’s new collection of children’s tableware feature matching plates and bowls, which come in bee, monkey, owl and dog. (For some reason the frog didn’t make the cut. They’re BPA-free, phthalate-free and PVC-free, but because they’re made of melamine we’d still recommend hand-washing. And if you can’t get enough...

An XOXO to OXO’s new BPA-free snack servers

True Parent Confession: Life is so hectic that I once served crackers to my toddler in one of her own shoes. I couldn’t give her the giant, store-fresh bag of cheesy crunchers in her car seat, but I had promised her a snack. So she had an empty Mary Jane of slightly sandy crackers. So here’s a better idea. (As if there were a worse idea.) And it’s a better idea than mystery plastic from China, too: The awesome new BPA-free feeding line from OXO. This brand new line of BPA-free snack and feeding line for kids has something...

Possibly the most fun way yet to get your kids to eat their veggies.

Remember those Dapper Dan the Magnetic Man toys from when we (or , okay, maybe our parents) were kids? It was so much fun to use the magnetic wand to give that smiling bald dude bizarre facial hair, hats, and eye patches. And now our kids can make those faces– and eat them, too, with these most fabulous plates. The Food Face Plate from Perpetual Kid is even more fun than the original toy. The 8.5 inch plate is made from hotel-quality, food-safe, high-fire ceramic, so it’s pretty durable–at least after that “fling everything and screech” phase is over....
