Sure, we think every day deserves to be International Women’s Day, but we’re also delighted to take today to celebrate the political, economic, and social accomplishments and contributions of women around the globe. Here at Cool Mom Picks, we especially love supporting businesses that empower women in developing areas. Here are four of our favorites.

Bonus: what a great way to find a gift for the women who inspire you!

Raven + Lily is our very favorite type of company: run by women, for women, and providing women in developing countries with sustainable economic opportunities, healthcare, and literacy programs.

It doesn’t hurt that their jewelry is reasonably priced and gorgeous. The Zia leather feather earrings go with nearly everything (and I should know, because I’m wearing them right now).

Sseko is helping women in Uganda put their best foot forward–through sandals. Each pair of sandals is handmade by women during their gap between secondary school and university, ensuring that they have the money to stay afloat and achieve their educational goals. And they’re pretty cool shoes, too, with a variety of unique ways to tie the straps. They even have a wedding line now!

The Relief Bead Program of Relief International is pretty simple: buy one ReliefBead bracelet to feed a malnourished child in Darfur for one week, buy five to restore a malnourished child to good health, or buy a bunch and start saving lives. The bracelets are handcrafted by African women to combat malnutrition and hunger, and while they’re not extremely posh, they look great stacked up, especially for summer. We also think they make great gifts for teachers, babysitters, or teens. Click here to buy.

Our editor Liz got to see firsthand the good being done in Africa by fashionABLE, a company that sells gorgeous, stylish scarves handcrafted by at-risk women in Ethiopia. Each scarf includes a handwritten note from the woman who made it, including her name, and you can read her story online and see the exact life your purchase has touched.

Bonus! Our friends at fashionABLE will be on The Today Show tomorrow at 10 am (no matter what time zone you’re in!). In honor of their participation in International Women’s Day, they’re offering free shipping with the code IWD.

Do you have a favorite company that gives back to women? Let us know! We love to hear what organizations and causes have your heart. –Delilah
