I love how books can help kids adjust to new life events, like going to school for the first time. If your preschooler or young elementary student is nervous about these early weeks of school, or you have a kid heading off to a new school this year and having to make all new friends, I am so excited to have found Chu’s First Day of School by Neil Gaiman and Adam Rex.
Because, Neil Gaiman. Just one of my favorite authors, that’s all.
Chu may already be a favorite in your household, considering his inaugural book, Chu’s Day, was a New York Times bestseller. In this second board book, the authors have the panda headed to school for the first time, but he’s nervous the kids won’t be nice and he won’t fit in. Sound like a familiar concern? When the teacher asks the students–each one a fantastically illustrated animal–to sit down together and share what they’re each good at, Chu learns that everyone has a different talent.
When it’s finally Chu’s turn to share, let me just say that kids will love the funny payoff.
Your kids won’t be able to get enough of this book. In which case, no problem; just check out the free Chu’s First Day of School printables and activities at Neil Gaiman’s website, MouseCircus.com.
I have to admit, as long as I’ve loved Neil Gaiman, I never thought he’d be there for me as I sent my son off to preschool. Pretty awesome.
