If you need to escape some of the more commercial-sounding kids’ music that has been playing on a loop in your CD player (and in your brain – get it out!), Elizabeth Mitchell’s new release, You Are My Little Bird, will clear your head for sure.
Released on the Smithsonian Folkways label (yes, that Smithsonian) in August, this compilation includes plenty of familiar American folk songs like Little Liza Jane and Down in the Valley; plus songs by adult faves like Lou Reed, Bob Marley, and Neil Young.
The album is genuinely homemade – Mitchell recorded it with her husband and five-year-old daughter in their home studio. Her sound is true folk – simple, smart, and understated. Listening might actually make your ears forget they ever heard the SpongeBob theme song.
Thank God for small favors. –Amy
