Only once in my life have I encountered a woman who said, "I can’t wait to get pregnant because the maternity clothes are like SOOOO CUTE!" I think she was high.
That said, the category is certainly getting more appealing by the day. One of the newer labels on our radar is the very swanky LA-based Schone Maternity from designer Rebecca Schoneveld Cheek. Add a few of her high-style pieces to your wardrobe and you won’t dread walking out the door quite so much for 40 long weeks of your life.
Not everyone can afford beautiful items like the Sasha dress (shown here) at $236. But as someone who’s now done the maternity thing twice, I promise that if you spend a bit on a few nice, well-tailored basics like Schone’s pants and tops you’ll end up giving them more wear during those pregnant months than your regular clothes ever get.
Plus, the company is just cool: All the fabrics are either organic or made from sustainable material like bamboo fiber. And when you’re done with your clothes (and if you don’t have a lucky friend to pass them onto) Schone will refurbish them and donate them to Momma’s House then send you a beautiful fair-trade scarf in return. Which means you’ll have twice the reason to celebrate outgrowing maternity sizes. –Liz
