With a husband in the military, our troops are always on my mind, even beyond Memorial Day. Even though today is a great day just to celebrate family and the beginning of summer, if you’re so inclined, here are a few very simple ways to show your thanks, and honor military service today and every day.

How to support our troops on Memorial Day

Support a worthy cause: You’ll find no shortage of amazing military charities, from Operation Gratitude and Fisher House Foundation that help provide support for military families, to Team Rubicon, which utilizes the skills of veterans to help people in need and has blown us away with their work after the Oklahoma Tornados and Hurricane Sandy most recently. Your support helps them continue to provide their amazing services.

Donate your old gadgets: If you’ve got old cell phones tucked into cabinets and drawers, put them to good use and send them to Cell Phones for Soldiers, who recycles them to give soldiers free calls to their loved ones when they’re deployed. With morale tents often full, being able to call home for free is a huge boost for troops and their loved ones on the other end.

Run a Race: These days, you can run for more than just a personal best. You can raise money for charity, like in the grueling Tough Mudder, which donates every dollar you raise to the Wounded Warrior Project. The Spartan Race series will offer a discounted race entry fee to those who offer to donate to Home for Our Troops. Or just register with Charity Miles and you can earn money for your favorite military related charity whenever you run.
