Should kids be paid for chores? Fascinating discussion + expert advice | #spawnedshow

Sometimes we agree on topics, sometimes we disagree, and sometimes we just figure it out as we talk it out. Sometimes, itโ€™s all three! Which is in part why we think youโ€™ll really enjoy this weekโ€™s discussion on the Spawned podcast about kidsโ€™ and chores. How do we get our children to do more around the house? Should we pay them or offer other incentives? What do the experts say? And do Kristenโ€™s kids really clean the toilets? Because, whoa. Liz is impressed.

Plus, we have a fun discussion about the insane names we mayyyy (ahem) use for other parents in our phoneโ€™s address books โ€” please tell us itโ€™s not just us. And as always, weโ€™ve got each of our cool picks of the week.

You can listen right here, or just subscribe to Spawned on iTunes and listen in the Podcast app that comes totally free with your iOS device.

  1. Our 4 year old helps out as asked, and usually heโ€™s eager to do it, but weโ€™ve recently added that he can earn quarters for cleaning up. (usually about 10 things picked up = one quarter).

Heโ€™s been earning quarters for other behaviors we want to train (potty training and walking to the bus as examples), he saves them up, and gets to pick something to get with them.

    Heโ€™s very excited by this.

When he spends the quarters we buy the thing, and put that amount in a savings account for him. (the quarters go back into our bowl to hand him for rewards again. It may not be getting him to save, but itโ€™s letting him know that weโ€™re saving for him.

    1. Thatโ€™s so clever, Sarah. So glad you found a system that works for you! And hey, heโ€™s four, right? Lots of time to learn to save.

      Potty firstโ€ฆsavings later.
