It’s so wonderful to find a charming, modern, imagination-building kids’ tv show that adults can appreciate too, and Bluey is all that and more. Critics have even called it “a show kids can watch on repeat without driving parents crazy” so yay for that!
And now, it’s airing on Disney Jr. and streaming right on Disney Plus.
If your child hasn’t yet said g’day to Australia’s popular six-year-old Blue Heeler Dog, Bluey, and her younger sister Bingo, it’s a joyous celebration of family, friends and the all-out imaginative fun of childhood in today’s world.
Bluey and Bingo love to role play (just like kids, right?) from doctors, to butterflies, hotel managers or “fancy ladies.” They are amazing at inventing games, creating rules, and making sure everyone has a part to play.
But the thing parents really love about the show — besides the wry humor — is that the pups always bring in Mum and Dad to join in, making it a family affair.
(Come on, how many children’s show have we all laughed about because the parents don’t ever seem to be around?)
It’s also wonderful, if too rare, to see a depiction of a household with two work-out-of-the-home parents. Especially considering the parents’ less predictable careers: Mum works in airport security and Dad is an archeologist (get it? Digging up bones? Ha! ) Sometimes the parents even have to juggle work life with home life, or grapple with real-world issues like the rising cost of lost teeth these days.
(“Five bucks?!”)
Been there.
Truly, it’s the kind of show that helps more kids see their own family reflected right back to them, which is so important.
Just don’t be surprised if Bluey inspires your kids to get up off the couch and start some new imaginative playing of their own. It may even involve you squeezing into a costume, or getting down on all fours for a horsey ride.
Knee pads optional. But highly recommended. Those horsey rides can be long.
