Last week, I had the privilege of meeting John Legend (I KNOW!) and hearing him play live about five feet in front of me (I KNOW, I KNOW!) as he introduced us to My Favorite Dream. His first children’s album, produced by the incredible Sufjan Stevens is a love letter to his children that we all get to share with ours now.

The backstory is kind of wild. It started with his baby daughter Esti, who loved the “Maybe” song from a Fisher Price Kick n Play Mat — though most parents tend to know it as “The Purple Money Song.”

(I kind of love that they didn’t have some fancy celebrity playmat for their kids — whatever that means.)

The kind of Fisher-Price playmat that started it all — under $40 on sale right now. Celebrities, they’re just like us!

Seeing as how John Legend is John Legend, he taught himself the Fisher-Price tune to play for his kids. His wife Chrissy Tegen uploaded the performance to Instagram, and their combined gazillion fans loved it so much, they asked for more.

So John wrote nine original songs, plus three Fisher-Price songs (what a collab!) and the My Favorite Dream album was born.

While the songs are a treat — I mean, he could sing the legal disclaimer from a pharma ad and we’d all listen, right? — I particularly adore the song L-O-V-E, featuring Chrissy and his own kids Luna and Miles singing backup. Luna even designed the artwork for the single so it really is a family affair.

Here’s a little excerpt of the live performance:
