The Red Badge of Courage

Cool Mom Picks Pick of the Year badge

I have been in the market for a new handbag recently and somehow stumbled onto Mod Cloth, which is fast becoming my top new online obsession. This vintage and thrift webshop is the closest thing I have yet discovered to my favorite ever thrift shop in the Berkshires that went out of business years ago – and without the mothball smell and dangerously narrow aisles.

Founder Susan has an incredible eye and you’ll find clothes, accessories, housewares and bags (oh the bags) from indie designers mixed in with vintage and standard thrift store finds. It’s all nicely organized and photographed with purple blouseplenty of sizing and fabric details (“the top of this dress has stretch but the bottom does not”) and multiple views that rival Piperlime. But the best part might just be the prices.

While there’s no dollar bin like the one where I found my favorite topstitched black and white trench years ago, I did rub my eyes when I realized that most of the handbags were under $60 and there was plenty of vintage jewelry under $25.

There’s nothing there for kids just yet save for the rare Envirosax bag or cute doodads from Fred. Nope, this one is all just for us. Hooray for Mod Cloth!  –Liz
